BOYER Fern Elizabeth Boyer, 82, July 28, 2004, Wabash Friends Church, Indiana. Fern was born on July 8, 1922, to Charles and Leota (Haecker) Zintsmaster. She married Lawrence A. Boyer on April 19, 1941 in Wabash. She was a member of the Wabash Friends Church and a former member of the New Holland Friends Church. She graduated from Lincolnville High School in 1940. She was a lifelong Sunday school teacher and an avid reader. She was preceded in death by one brother, one sister, a half sister and one great-granddaughter. Survivors include her husband, Lawrence A. Boyer; two sons, L. Arden Boyer and John W. Boyer; one daughter, Barbara N. Holthouse; one brother, Paul Zintsmaster; one sister, Lois Johnson; 13 grandchildren; 16 greatgrandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

COOK Natalie Cook, 81, June 21, 2004, Jericho Friends Meeting, Indiana. Natalie was born on September 2, 1922, to Bert and Emma (Knoeike) Garlinger. She was a cafeteria worker for Driver Middle School in Winchester and a homemaker. She was an active member of Jericho Friends Meeting and enjoyed participating in the bell choir. She was preceded in death by her husband, Chelsia C. Cook; three brothers; three sisters; and one grandson, Dennis Cook. Survivors include three sons, Fred, Norman and Gary Cook; one daughter, Sally Moreland; two sisters, Kate Affolder and Agnes Ryf; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren

DALE Ruth Ellen Dale, 80, July 17, 2004, Wabash Friends Church, Indiana. Ruth was born on August 23, 1923, to Victor and Marie Elizabeth (Fall) Landis. She married Richard King Dale on April 9, 1944. She graduated from Lincolnville High School in 1941 and worked at Woolworth’s in Wabash for 10 years, as well as working at Emmalou’s. She was a homemaker and a member of Wabash Friends Church and its missionary society. She taught Sunday school and was the church librarian. She was also a member of the Linlawn Home Extension Club. She was preceded in death by two brothers, James Landis and Phillip Landis. Survivors include her husband, Richard Dale; two sons, Steven Dale and Ken Dale; one daughter, Carol Haupert; one sister, Pauline Gurtner; seven grandsons, Scott Haupert, Mike Dale, Nathan Haupert, Troy Haupert, Nicholas Haupert, Hared Haupert and Darrin Haupert; four granddaughters, Tina Smith, Kimberly Dale, Kristen Dale and Allison Haupert; two greatgrandsons, Alexander Haupert and Grant Smith; and one great-granddaughter, Allysa Haupert. Memorials may be sent to the Wabash Friends Church Building Fund or the Alzheimer’s Association.

JONES Norma Katherine Jones, 83, 2003, Maryville Friends Church, Tennessee. Norma was born on September 3, 1920, to Fred and Louise Dunlap Jeffries. She was a Charter Member of Maryville Friends Meeting where she served as pianist, organist, Sunday school teacher and Bible School teacher. She also worked in summer Bible School at a small, under-privileged church in Maryville. She made hundreds of quilts, gowns and blankets, and rolled bandages and saved bottles for the Friends hospital in Kenya. She sponsored two children in World Vision for around 25 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin; and one brother, Milton Jeffries. Survivors include two sisters, Ernestine Daniel and Louise (Babe) Harper; and several nieces and nephews.

LASSITER Elmer Cartland Lassiter, 79, June 9, 2004, Upriver Friends Meeting, Virginia. Elmer was born to John Elmer and Martha Winslow Lassiter. He was retired manager of Albemarle Fertilizer and a farmer. He was a member of Up River Friends Meeting and chairman of Albemarle Soil & Water Conservation Commission. Survivors include his wife, Faye Winslow Lassiter; three sons, Rodney, Randy and Russell; one brother, Harold; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. LEE Mary Edna Drake Lee, 85, June 24, 2003, Maryville Friends Church, Tennessee. Edna was born to Burl Edwin Drake and Roxie Ellen Rhea. She was a member of Friendsville Friends Meeting during her young and early adult life. She attended Friendsville Academy, graduating with the class of 1935. During World War II, Edna held several jobs. On May 26, 1945, she left work to marry her childhood sweetheart, Thomas Ned Lee, who had just returned from a German prisoner of war camp. Edna was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, and a friend to all who knew her. Edna and her husband Ned re-established the Maryville Friends Meeting and became charter members in 1966, enthusiastically supported the new meeting and gave of their time and resources to help it grow and thrive. While actively serving in several positions, including service as meeting treasurer for 20 years, Edna set a standard of commitment that was greatly appreciated by her fellow church members. Survivors include one son, Thomas Ned Lee, Jr.; two daughters, Sandra Kay Stevens and Mary Susan Graves; and three grandchildren, Richard Graves, Russell Graves and Tessa Stevens.

PARKER Lois Laverne Parker, 97, May 29, 2004, Union Cross Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Lois was born November 3, 1906 to David “Dave Ike” Hutchens and Permelia Williams Hutchens. She was the oldest living member of Union Cross Friends Meeting and the last remaining child of her family. She was an excellent seamstress, making dresses and other clothing and dressing dolls. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tandy Early Parker; one son, David Parker; one daughter, Shirley Parker Dixon; one granddaughter, Robin Bolton Brown; three sisters and four brothers. Survivors include four sons, James, Larry, Charles, and Buddy; one daughter, Judy Jester; sixteen grandchildren and twenty-four greatgrandchildren. PATRICK John S. “Johnny” Patrick, Jr., 62, November 29, 2003, Maryville Friends Church, Tennessee, from an apparent heart attack. Johnny was born on August 16, 1941. He was a graduate of Everett High School and started playing music at an early age. He mastered many musical instruments, the guitar, piano, organ and bass among his favorites. He shared his musical talents at Maryville Friends on special occasions and his gentle, friendly ways were enjoyed every Sunday he attended. He was a member of the Nashville Musicians’ Union for 40 years and a member of the Knoxville Musicians’ Association for 35 years, where he recently served on the Board of Directors. Johnny has played with his own band and other bands all over the country, has been featured on personal appearances, recordings, radio and television shows and has performed and traveled with Grand Ole Opry Stars including Ernest Tubbs, Johnny Cash, Don Gibson, Wilma Lee, Stoney Cooper and Ava Barber.

SMITH Virginia Louise Binns Kelsey Smith, 85, June 8, 2004, Wilmington Friends Church, Wilmington, Ohio and First Friends Meeting, Greensboro, North Carolina. Virginia was born July 13, 1918, to James Howard and Edith Steer Binns. Virginia graduated from Olney Friends School, Barnesville, Ohio, Wilmington College, Ohio and received a honorary doctorate degree in human reconciliation from Wilmington College in 1978. She was a member of Wilmington Friends Church, Wilmington, Ohio, and First Friends Meeting, Greensboro. Virginia began her teaching career in Yellow Springs, Ohio, in 1940, continued to teach in Titusville, Florida, and then was a teacher and principal of Dependents School, American Samoa. The first teacher of a class for the mentally handicapped children in Clinton County, Ohio, in 1958, she then became superintendent of the Clinton County Board of Mental Retardation in 1960. She became the principal of Town and Country School in 1960 and later developed the Nike Center in 1972. She was one of five chosen to write the first state curriculum guide for the mentally retarded. Virginia retired as the superintendent of the Board of Developmental Disabilities in 1982. The Smith House in Wilmington, Ohio, is named after her. Virginia volunteered at the Clinton County Historical Museum, Prairieview Apartments, Wilmington Friends Church and most recently at the Guilford College Hege Library in the Quaker Room. She was a trustee of the North Carolina Friends Historical Society, helped organize the Clinton County Genealogical Society, and was a Girl Scout leader. In 2000, she was named Outstanding Woman of the Year in Clinton County, Ohio. In 1942 Virginia married Louis E. Kelsey, who died in 1944. In 1947, she married Richard Z. Smith. She was preceded in death by both husbands. Survivors include one son, Howard Smith; two daughters, Karolyn (Kelsey) Huffman and Sara (Smith) Sheldon; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. TICKLE Posie Volly Tickle, 91, July 25, 2004, Union Hill Friends Meeting, Mount Airy, North Carolina. Posie Tickle was born January 4, 1913, the son of Thomas Benton Tickle and Winnie Creed Tickle. He was retired from farming and was manager of Mayberry Apartments for several years. He was a devoted member and Elder of Union Hill Friends Meeting. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alma Lee Newton Tickle; one son, Billy Gray Tickle; one grandchild, Lisa Atkins; two sisters, Ocie Newman and Annie Collins; and one brother, Thurmond Tickle. Survivors include one son, Don Tickle; four daughters, Barbara White, Glenda Coe, Carol Smitherman and Joyce Williams; 13 grandchildren; and 16 greatgrandchildren. WARDEN Elsie Williams Warden, 81, June 3, 2004, Deep Creek Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Elsie was born July 2, 1922, to Gurney and Rosa Davis Williams. She was a devoted minister’s wife who loved her Lord, her children, grandchildren, friends and her flowers. She was a member of Deep Creek Friends Meeting. She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Guy Warden, and six brothers. Survivors include four sons, Lawrence, Wade, Donald and Jimmy Warden; one daughter, Shirley Angell; 11 grandchildren; 11 greatgrandchildren; two brothers, Clay and Robert Williams; two sisters, Cora Hicks and Grace Snow; and her special caregiver and friend from Touched By Angels, Carolyn Kiger.
