BLAYLOCK Ella Weant, 101, College Avenue Friends, Oskaloosa, Iowa.
Ella served the United Society of Friends Women, receiving the Eliza Armstrong
Cox Award, and was honored along with her family by the Torch Award in
the William Penn College Hall of Fame. Survivors include daughters Opal,
Myrtle, and Ramona; son Gren; and twelve grandchildren.
BLYTHE Tazewell Julian "TJ", Jr., 84, Bethel (Virginia) Friends Meeting, July 11. Born in Southampton County, he was a son of the late T.J. and Annie Stieh Blythe. T.J. was a member of Black Creek Meeting in Sedley until it was laid down in the 1960Ős. He then joined Bethel (VA) Meeting where he was a faithful member. An Army veteran of World War II, he was a retired carpenter. He was a member of the Burdette-Black Creek Ruritan Club, Purdie Masonic Lodge and the Black Creek Hunt Club. Survivors include two sisters, Minnie Blythe and Edith Senter; two brothers, Fenton Blythe and Ocie Beale; a special friend, Ruby Vaughan of Burdette and numerous nieces and nephews. BOWMAN Russell Eugene "Gene," 74, Mount Airy Friends, North Carolina, May 30. Born in Surry County, December 27, 1925, the son of Andrew and Chattie Griffith Bowman, Gene was former postmaster for the Mount Airy Post Office. He served as Sunday school teacher and on various committees, was past president of the Mount Airy Country Club and Mount Airy Lions Club, commissioner for the city of Mount Airy for eight years, former member of the board of directors of the Mount Airy Red Cross, member of Granite Masonic Lodge and the Surry Shrine Club. Gene served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was captain and company commander for the North Carolina National Guard in Mount Airy. He was preceded in death by 13 brothers and sisters. Survivors include his wife Frances Simpson Bowman; sons Russell, Mike, and Johnny; seven grandchildren; a great-grandson; sister Eva Lou Milford; and brother Martin Bowman.
FITZGERALD John Maurice, 79, Evanston Friends, Illinois, March 10. John Fitzgerald grew up in Cairo, Illinois. He and his wife Rosemary Smith joined the Religious Society of Friends after their marriage, and were members of Chicago Meeting, later joining Evanston Meeting. An active member, John Fitzgerald would often serve the meeting through his work in the kitchen or on the meetinghouse and grounds. He graduated from Southern Illinois University and received his Master's degree from the University of Iowa. He taught at DeVry Technical Institute in Chicago and at Ball State, Muncie, Indiana. Though his main interest was teaching English and Speech, he held many jobs during his varied career--chef, department store manager, and adjudicator for the Illinois Unemployment Bureau being among them. He also wrote school textbooks. He was preceded in death by his wife Rosemary. Survivors include his daughters Mary, Barbara Rosemary, and Sally Mydill; his sons John, Terry, and Richard; eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
GASKILL Roger Allen, 72, Winter Park Friends, Florida, March 16. Roger Gaskill married Catherine Balderston Jones in 1956. He was Treasurer of Winter Park Meeting and a trustee of Southeastern Yearly Meeting, and would host SERVAS visitors from many different countries. A student at Antioch, M.I.T., and the University of Michigan, he was the inventor of the computer language DAS, which enabled a digital computer to function as an analog computer. His work in computers sprang from his interest in communications as a means of fostering world peace. He is survived by his wife Catherine, two sons David and Ben, and three grandsons.
HARVEY Edna W., 96, South Marion Friends, Indiana, February 23. A teacher in the Marion Community Schools for 20 years, Edna Harvey retired in 1963. Survivors include her sons, Paul, John, and Larry, 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild.
HAYNES Carl D., 78, Jonesboro Friends, Indiana, June 19. Son of Charles and Idalia (Ruley) Haynes, Carl Haynes graduated from Jonesboro High School in 1940. He organized a group of senior members at his meeting who became known as "The Keenagers." His book of poems, Reflections in Memory, was published in 1987. He served in WWII in General PattonŐs Third Army and was a member of the American Legion Post 95, Jonesboro, and of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 6728, Gas City. He owned and operated D & H Transmission from 1958 until he retired in 1970. A charter member of the Mill Township Fire Department, he served as chief for 12 years. His first wife, Lois Overmeyer, whom he married in 1943, preceded him in death in 1988. His second wife, Gertrude Adams, whom he married in 1991, preceded him in death in 1993. Survivors include his sons, Gary and Steven; his brother Joe; his sisters Maxine Trowbridge and Olive Revis; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; five great grandchildren, and four step-great grandchildren.
JOHNSON Ralph, 84, Evanston Friends, Illinois, January 5. Ralph Johnson was born in Marion County, Indiana, to Clayton and Emma Johnson. A graduate of Earlham College, he majored in Economics and played football. On October 16, 1938, he married classmate Eleanor Mavity, and they moved to Chicago where Ralph worked with his brother Walter. Ralph and his family found their spiritual home at Evanston Meeting, where Ralph served at various times as a trustee, as Treasurer, and as Clerk. He also served for many years as a trustee of Earlham College. Survivors include his wife Eleanor of 61 years, his sons Richard and Steven, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
LEE Mary E., 80, South Marion Friends, Indiana, April 18. A member of South Marion Friends for 55 years, Mary was a former beautician and the owner of Lee's Beauty Shop. She had also been an assistant manager for Paul Harris Stores and an employee of the First National Bank. She retired from H & H Auto Sales and Service in 1981. She was preceded in death by her daughter Rita Janene and a brother and sister. Survivors include her husband Gilbert of 60 years; her daughters Suzanne Miller and Sondra Atkinson; two brothers; two sisters; five grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.
MARTIN Samuel Eugene, 84, Fairmount Friends, Indiana, March 2, 2000. Samuel Martin was born November 3, 1915. A 1933 graduate of Fairmount High School, he played varsity basketball and baseball. He served in WW II from 1943 to 1945 in the Army Air Corp's 642nd Bombardier Squadron. Very active in the 4-H Club, he served on the 4-H Fair Board for many years. He was known for his large vegetable garden which he shared with his many friends.
PORTER Doris A. Wilson, 93, Upland Friends, Indiana, May 24. She was born August 29, 1906, in Dublin, Ireland, the daughter of Alex and Edith (Green) Wilson. She was a 1924 graduate of Friends Bible College, and a 1934 graduate of Taylor University, Indiana, majoring in Education. She married Clarence Porter and moved to Upland in 1941 from Plains, Kansas. She was a long time member of the Upland Friends Meeting and a life member of the United Society of Friends Women. A dedicated supporter of missionary work, she supported several missionaries at the time of her death. She had served in many capacities at the Meeting including Sunday School teacher, clerk and recording clerk, on Ministry and Oversight, Missions Committee and USFW. She faithfully attended Indiana Yearly Meeting and had attended Friends United Meeting and USFW International triennials. She served as the Upland Town Librarian for over 20 years and taught elementary education in Kansas. She had also been employed as the Taylor University postmistress and had done social work in Toledo, Ohio. Her husband Clarence and her brother Stanley Wilson preceded her in death. Survivors include daughters Marilyn Porter and Mary Alice Said; son John P. Porter; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Upland Friends Meeting, 1101 S Main, Upland IN 46989 or to Quaker Haven Camp, Syracuse, Indiana, or to the USFW.
THOMAS Margaret W., 83, Fairmount Friends, Indiana, December 27, 1999. Margaret Thomas was born on November 2, 1916, to Merton and Effie (Jones) Woolen. A graduate of Fairmount High School and of Earlham College, she married Roger H. Thomas on March 5, 1939. Margaret was a lover of nature and belonged to the Audubon Society. She was preceded in death by her husband.
