Dear Reader

Welcome to "Among Friends," a journey among our Quaker family, past and present.

The Norwegian Sloopers remind us of the steadfast faith needed to journey to a new land and establish faith communities; of one migration which failed to maintain its Quaker faith and of the second which established Friends Meetings still in existence.

Numerous news stories and photos share the continuing ways Friends are sharing their faith and working among people--in Mexico, Indiana, Kenya, Ramallah, and Chicago. The 100th birthday of Elton Trueblood is remembered with photos and quotations.

At Salem Friends, Iowa, Dorothy Payne writes of its 38 years of Missions Conferences which have sent out 38 Friends to missions work.

Most Yearly Meetings have concluded and selections from their Epistles continue in this issue. Led by a call of the Spirit, New York Yearly Meeting celebrated a time of Sabbath rest and Jubilee. Clerk Linda Chidsey writes about this continuing story of God's movement.

Additional writers for the regular columns begin to appear in this issue. Sara Beth Terrell of North Carolina debuts her Bible Study, "A Habit of Giving Thanks." She will be joined by Howard Macy, Northwest; Jan Hoffman, New England; and continuing writer, Jan Hodson, Indiana, as the months progress.

Bruce Bishop has regularly written the Salt and Light column. Jack Kirk, North Carolina, "Hard To Be a Quaker," begins his turn in the rotation along with Alan Weinacht, Indiana. The expanded book review section points us to new stories of faith and inspiration.

May your faith be uplifted and your soul encouraged as you read this issue of Quaker Life. Blessings to you all, dear readers.

Blessings in Christ,
Trish Edwards-Konic

COVER STORIES

10 Quaker Sloopers:
First Norwegian Immigrants to the United States

Wilmer Tjossem
Two waves of Friends migration from Norway left two differing results. The first, moving into New York and then Illinois, acculturated and left no lasting Friends community. The second, moving into Iowa, established Friends meetings still strong all these years later.

14 Remembering Elton Trueblood
On what would have been his 100th birthday, Friends are remembering Elton Trueblood. Many of his books and speeches about faith in Christ continue to encourage and equip Christians in spiritual growth.

16 A Year of Sabbath Rest and Jubilee
in New York Yearly Meeting

Linda Bishop Chidsey
Sensing a call to a year of Sabbath rest and Jubilee, New York Yearly Meeting began praying to discover how that would be enacted in yearly meeting sessions. Read the story of not doing business as usual and relying on the movement of the Spirit.

20 Ideas That Work:
Missions Conventions for 38 Years

Dorothy Payne
Involved for 38 years in missions conferences at Salem Friends, Iowa, Dorothy Payne shares both her spiritual growth and the impact of the conferences on the meeting. Over the years, 38 people have answered calls to mission work because of this faithful witness.
