News from Friends United Meeting
FUM Appoints New Field Secretary to East Africa Region
Marian Baker, teacher, recorded minister in New England Yearly Meeting,
and beloved Friend has recently been appointed as the FUM Field Secretary--East
Africa Region. Her departure for the field is set for August 18, 2001.
In addition to serving on the FUM General Board for 12 years, Marian
has traveled extensively in ministry throughout the world. She previously
served FUM for 10 years as a teacher and headmistress of several Friends
Girls' Schools in Kenya, successfully finding and training Kenyan women
to take her place in each position. For the past 18 years she has taught
and coordinated environmental monitoring projects in high schools in New
Hampshire while continuing to minister during weekends and holidays. She
has also held numerous leadership positions in New England Yearly Meeting
and USFW, as well as doing ecumenical work.
"Christ is my constant friend and companion, who continues to lead
me cheerfully over the world, encouraging Friends to grow in their walk
with God and to grow in their own forms of ministry," says Marian,
whose gifts in ministry were recently recorded by NEYM.
In her new role, Marian will travel widely among the 14 yearly meetings
in East Africa, encouraging East African Friends to work together in support
of FUM and to support and encourage the training of leadership through
Friends Theological College in Kaimosi. She will also support and encourage
East African Friends as they prepare to host the upcoming FUM Triennial
to be held in July, 2002. Additional responsibilities will include assisting
those Yearly Meetings which have applied for and are preparing for full
membership in FUM.
Another key role will be to assist Rich and Sandy Davis in their work
of training and encouraging pastors and other spiritual leaders at FTC.
As an experienced educator, she will teach periodic classes and find ways
to continue upgrading the curriculum and other educational aspects of
the college. She is quick to affirm, "There is much North American
and African Friends can learn from each other and encourage each other
as we live out our lives with Christ in honesty, humility, equality, and
with much prayer."
