Deaths:
BERRY Norma Berry, 74, West Richmond Friends, Indiana, August
30, 2000. Norma was the daughter of Elbert Ramey and Dorothy Shannon Ramey.
She and her husband, Gene, had just returned from a trip to Paris celebrating
their 50th wedding anniversary. She was an active member of the USFWI,
and worked tirelessly for the Richmond Community Food Pantry and the Lauramoore
Friends Home. Without mentioning their names, Norma and Gene were described
in the national best-seller, The Beardstown Ladies' Stitch-in-Time Guide
to Growing Your Nest Egg. A secretary to the psychology department at
Earlham College, she helped start a speech and hearing clinic in Richmond..
A volunteer for the Boys Club, Norma also served as president of the PTA.
Survivors include two sons, Steven and Jonathan.
BRAXTON Walter Buckner Braxton, 97, First Friends, Greensboro,
North Carolina, February 10, 2001. A member of his meeting for 72 years,
he sang in the choir and served in a variety of offices. He was also a
volunteer worker at Friends Homes and at the soup kitchen of Urban Ministries.
He belonged to Masonic Lodge 552 and was past president and Secretary
of State of the Greensboro Wildflower Society. From 1935 to 1968 he was
owner and operator of a Shell service station. Survivors include his wife,
Viola Andrew Braxton, and several nieces and nephews.
COLTRANE John B. Coltrane, 84, New Garden Friends, North Carolina,
February 11, 2001. John Coltrane was the son of Shubal and Flora Gray
Coltrane. Retired, he had been the first Director of Maintenance at Friends
Homes, Inc., where he had worked since 1974. He was a member of the Guilford
College Volunteer Fire Department and had also worked as a volunteer with
the American Red Cross and the Boy Scouts. He was also a dedicated gardener.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Floyd, Paul, and Ray; two
sisters, Mae C. Coble and Aileen C. Snider; and a son, John B. Coltrane,
Jr. Survivors include his wife, Margaret Fields; a sister, Louise C. Foreman;
a daughter, Jane C. Norwood; seven grandchildren, Chip, John, and Melissa
Lynn Norwood, Lisa, Daniel, and Gene Coltrane, and John Harold; and four
great-grandchildren.
COLTRANE Lena Farlow Coltrane, 92, New Garden Friends, February
7, 2001. Lena Coltrane was a graduate of Guilford College, and had lived
in New Orleans, Louisiana, since 1932. She was preceded in death by three
brothers, Junius, Foy and Beven Farlow and a sister, Gertha F. Love. Survivors
include her husband Reese Alexander Coltrane; a sister, Phyllis Farlow
Wakefield, and numerous nieces and nephews.
COPE Harold Cope, 82, Sandy Springs Friends, February 5, 2001.
Harold Cope was born August 9, 1918 to Joshua Alban and Edith Cary Cope.
He married Anne Elizabeth Reeves in 1943. He had been a member of Clear
Creek and First Friends in Richmond, Indiana. He served as clerk of Indiana
Yearly Meeting, as Director of the Board of the AFSC and as board member
of Sandy Springs Friends School. He also served as a member of FWCC and
was a Friend in Residence at both Pendle Hill and Woodbrooke, England.
He helped prepare for the 1982 Triennial and World Conference in Kenya.
He served Earlham College for 26 years as chief accountant, assistant
comptroller, business manager, and vice president for business affairs.
He later served as president of Friends University, Wichita, Kansas. He
was preceded in death by his wife Anne Elizabeth; and a sister, Mary Elizabeth
Probasco. Survivors include a son, David; three daughters, Sara C. Putnam,
Elizabeth C. McDonald, and Hannah C. Richter; and a brother, Jim.
HEIDEN Dorothy Sizelove Heiden, 85, First Friends, Anderson, Indiana,
January 31, 2001. Dorothy Heiden was born September 30, 1915 to Dennis
and Bess Sizelove. Past president of USFW, she served for many years in
the Cradle Roll Department of her meetingŐs Sunday School and often visited
shut-ins as well. She had also served as president of the Twenty-Ninth
Street School MotherŐs Club. Dorothy was a homemaker. Preceding her in
death was her husband, Peter C.J. Heiden; a sister, Betty Jane; and a
grandson, Peter A. Hunter. Survivors include three daughters, Judy Hunter,
Paula Bryant, and Cathy Stewart; ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
HELTON Sara Robertson Helton, 62, Winston-Salem Friends, North
Carolina, February 23, 2001. Sara Helton was born October 3, 1938 to Gurney
and Alma Taylor Robertson. She was an active member of her meeting and
sang in the choir. She was also a member of Alpha Delta Kappa. Survivors
include her husband of 41 years, C. Jerry Helton; two daughters, Sharon
Helton Cooper and Lisa Ann Helton; two grandchildren, Christina N. Cooper
and Matthew A. Cooper; a sister, Bertie R. Cooper; two brothers, Charles
G. and Thomas Robertson; and several nieces and nephews.
McADAMS Walter I. McAdams, 76, Hemlock Friends, Indiana, February
18, 2001. Walter McAdams had been pastor of Union Street Friends for 18
years, and had also pastored Amboy, Carthage, Fiatt, and Portland Friends
Meetings. After his retirement in 1981, he was Chaplain at St. Joseph
Hospital and Health Center. He was active on several committees for both
Indiana and Western Yearly Meetings, and had served as chairman for the
Committee on Christian Ministry and Evangelism, as well as director and
counselor for various youth camps. Indiana Wesleyan University recognized
him for 50 years of Christian service. Survivors include his wife, Margie
Lee Ogdon McAdams; two children, James McAdams and Mary Gross; a sister,
Doris; six grandchildren and a great-grandson.
McCLINTIC Pauline McClintic, Wabash Friends, Indiana, March 3,
2001. The daughter of Laura Rife, she married Walter J. McClintic on May
24, 1938. She had worked at Myers and Son Jewelers for over 20 years.
Survivors include a daughter, Linda Kay Allen; two grandchildren, Troy
Bahler and Tracy Minnick; and a great-granddaughter, Casey Lynne Minnick.
MOORE Lucretia Phillips Moore, 80, New Garden Friends, North Carolina,
February 25, 2001. Lucretia Moore was born September 8, 1920 to Paul D.
and Clara Gillies Phillips. She married J. Floyd Moore on September 10,
1943. She and her husband taught at the Friends School in Ramallah, Palestine
from 1946 to 1948. She served as Clerk of Ministry and Counsel for her
meeting and also taught First Day School. In 1987 and 1988 she served
on the staff of Friendly Woman. She traveled with her husband all over
the world in the service of Friends. She was a graduate of the Hartford
School of Religious Education, and had also worked as a secretary for
the YWCA. She was an active member and past president of the Guilford
College Art Appreciation Club. Survivors include her husband, J. Floyd
Moore; a daughter, Abigail Moore Sebastian; a son, Douglas; a sister,
Maude P. Stafford; and three grandchildren, Sarah, Teresa, and Brian Sebastian.
VLASKAMP Joseph Arend Vlaskamp, 81, Brooklyn Friends, New York,
January 19, 2001. Joseph Vlaskamp was born March 31, 1929 to Arend and
Martha Vlaskamp. He had ministered with First Friends, Indianapolis, and
Wilmington Friends, Wilmington, Ohio, and had been interim pastor at Valton
Friends, LaValle, Wisconsin, as well as serving other denominations. He
directed an AFSC work camp in Pennsylvania, and served as Secretary of
Religious Education, FGC, and as General Secretary of New York Yearly
Meeting. He also served on the General Board of Friends United Meeting.
He was a representative to the World Council of Churches in Zimbabwe and
to the regional World Council. In addition to his home meeting, he had
been an active member of Rancocas Friends, Westfield Friends, and Montclair
Friends, all in New Jersey. He graduated from Earlham College in 1950,
received his Bachelor of Divinity from the Hartford Theological Seminary
and his Master of Arts in Religious Education from the Hartford Seminary
Foundation. Survivors include his wife, "Lyn" D. Caroline; five
children, Jeffrey, Ronald, Douglas, Kristine Sharp, and Karen; a sister,
Wilma Cox; five grandchildren; a nephew, Jim Cox, and a niece, Peg Bidlingmeyer.
