Deaths:
BAILEY C. Lloyd Bailey, 82, Gwynedd Friends Meeting, Pennsylvania,
February 6, 2001. A Quaker peace activist who began serving UNICEF in
1959, he got thousands of youngsters to join the "Trick Or Treat
For UNICEF" to solicit millions of dollars in aid for poor and sick
children in 160 countries. A Temple University-trained attorney, he refused
military induction during World War II, and filed as a conscientious objector.
He was married for 56 years to Mary Margaret Binford Bailey. After retiring
in 1982 as the longest-running president of the United States Committee
for UNICEF, Lloyd devoted the remainder of his life to teaching nonviolence
to prison inmates and was a volunteer workshop leader for the Quaker Alternatives
to Violence Program. Survivors include his wife, Mary; two sons, Thomas
and David; two daughters, Deborah and Barbara; two sisters; and six grandchildren.
BEESON M. Maxine Beeson, 79, Nettle Creek Friends, Hagerstown,
Indiana, March 28, 2001. Maxine was born May 31, 1921 to Frank J. and
Mary Alice Tharpe Williams. She and her husband owned and operated the
Mooreland, Indiana General Store for many years. She was a member of the
Mooreland Order of the Eastern Star and the Daffy Decum Club, and had
formerly belonged to the Mooreland First Christian Church. She was preceded
in death by her first husband, Bill Saffer, and her sister, Dolores Starr.
Survivors include her husband, Wilmer Beeson; three sisters, Anna Louise
Sieweke, Barbara Franklin and Martha Lane; one brother, Garth; two daughters,
Sharon Graves and Karen Holler; two step-sons, Chris and Thomas; three
grandchildren, and step-grandchildren.
BOOMER Helen L. Boomer, 94, Winchester Friends, Indiana, March
26, 2001, Greenville, Ohio. Helen was born February 20, 1907, to William
B. and Vere Lambert Lucas of Versailles, Ohio. She was a beautician and
a homemaker. A member of her meeting and the USFW, she also belonged to
the Winchester YWCA's Owls. She was preceded in death by her husband,
Kenneth C. Boomer and one grandson. Survivors include two sons, Kenneth
and W. Fred; one daughter, Mary Alice Moore; one sister, Maurine Smith;
three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and a niece and nephew.
ELLIS Gene Everett Ellis, 75, Ridge Farm Friends Meeting, Illinois,
March 18, 2001. Gene was born in Quaker, Indiana on August 30, 1925. He
was member of the Ridge Farm Friends Meeting, Illinois.
GREEN Catharine J. "Susie" Green, 85, Winchester Friends,
Indiana, April 1, 2001. Catharine Green was born June 2, 1915, to Roy
and Chloe Pavey Goshorne of Saskatchewan, Canada. She was a graduate of
Saskatchewan University. A homemaker and teacher, she was past president
of Tri Kappa Sorority and past editor of the Tri Kappa magazine. She was
recipient of the 1972 Randolph County Achievement Award as well as the
1978 Jane Leadership Award, bestowed by Purdue University Extension Services.
In 1974 she was named Lady of the Year by the Business and Professional
Women's Club. She worked with her husband to provide food and clothing
for the needy children of Randolph County through the Randolph County
Missions, and in 1979 she received, jointly with her husband, a special
award in honor of the Year of the Child from Governor Bowen. She was preceded
in death by her husband, Rodger B. Green. Survivors include her daughter
Betsy, two grandsons, and one great-granddaughter.
HESTER Helen M. Hester, 101, Ridge Farm Friends, Illinois, November
29, 2000. Helen was born August 7, 1899 in Ridge Farm. Recorded as a Friends
Minister in 1927, Helen served Western Yearly Meeting until 1977. She
was a prayer warrior and leader throughout her life and ministry. Helen
was a member of the Ridge Farm Friends Meeting.
HOLLINGSWORTH Edith M. Hollingsworth, 90, Hemlock Meeting, Indiana,
February 27, 2001. Edith was born October 2, 1911, and was the granddaughter-in-law
of Rachel Thomas, the founder of her meeting. She was an active member
and served in many positions, especially in the Sunday School. She was
preceded in death by her husband, Wiltsie Hollingsworth.
JACKSON Ethel Jackson, Hemlock Meeting, Indiana, September 8,
2000, Copeland Springs, Ohio. Ethel served as minister in both Indiana
Yearly Meeting and Western Yearly Meeting, and served Hemlock Friends
as pastor in the early 1970s. She was also involved in the USFW.
JACKSON Seth Jackson, Hemlock Meeting, Indiana, November 5, 2000,
Copeland Spirngs, Ohio. Seth served as minister in both Indiana Yearly
Meeting and Western Yearly Meeting, and served his meeting as pastor in
the early 1970s.
KRAMER Josephine Kramer, 92, Lynn Friends, Indiana , April 4,
2001, Winchester, Indiana. Josephine was born February 27, 1909, to James
M. and Claudia L. Clements Catey. She was a retired employee of Richmond
Power and Light. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Kramer,
and two sisters Doris McWhinney and Kathryn Meyer. Survivors include two
sons, James and David; one daughter, Donna Jo Hensey; two grandchildren,
and two great-grandchildren.
LYKINS Charles W. Lykins, 79, White River Friends, Winchester,
Indiana, March 26, 2001. Charles was born May 21, 1921 to Charles and
Ethel Jarrett Lykins. A World War II veteran, he retired after 46 years
from Omco Cast Metals, and then worked as a delivery man for NAPA. He
was preceded in death by his daughter, Linda Pence, and by four brothers,
Edward, Marvin, Jesse, and Ronald. Survivors include Bernice Berry Lykins,
his wife of 51 years; one daughter, Sherri Ketner; two sisters, Wilma
Glidwell and Zelma Deeds; seven grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.
