Rose, born January 29, 2000, Wabash Friends Church, Indiana.
Deaths:
CASSTEVENS Lela Mae Underwood Casstevens, 87, Branon Friends,
Yadkinville, North Carolina, March 28, 2001. Lela Mae was born May 10,
1913, to Miles Cole and Roxie Diana Underwood. She was preceded in death
by her husband, Hughie Asbury Casstevens; four brothers, Claude, J.D.,
Winfield and Robert; and four sisters; Clara Belle, Lula, Jerryline and
Pauline. Survivors include a sister, Ruth Johnson; a brother, Dwight Underwood;
and several nieces and nephews.
HARRELL Reba Florence Harrell, 37, Somerton Friends, Suffolk,
Virginia, April 29, 2001. Reba Harrell was a member of the United Society
of Friends Women. She was preceded in death by her mother, Emeline Holland
Harrell. Survivors include her father and stepmother, B. Clinton and Marie
Harrell Sr.; a sister, Janet H. Davidson; a brother, Clint, Jr.; a niece,
Stacey A. Davidson; and a nephew, Matthew C. Harrell.
JESSUP Evelyn B. Jessup, 78, Union Cross Friends, Yadkinville,
North Carolina, March 22, 2001. Evelyn was born January 29, 1923, to Oliver
T. and Ellen Shore Brown. Evelyn worked for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco and
for C.O. Jessup Insurance Agency. She was preceded in death by her sister,
Eunice Brown Pugh, and three brothers, Oliver T. Jr., Alton, and Herman
Brown. Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Carl O. Jessup; two
sons, Lonnie L. and Dennis R. Jessup; four grandchildren, Kelly Moon and
Lee, Brian and Christopher Jessup; four great-grandchildren, Kaitlin Lander,
Abbie Jessup, and Elijah and Quentin Moon; and two sisters, Louise Jennings
and Lenora Walker.
JESSUP Wilbur Jessup, 99, Bangor Liberty Friends, Iowa, March
21, 2001. Wilber was a farmer all his life. He attended William Penn College.
Wilber served his meeting in many different capacities as well as Iowa
Yearly Meeting. He had a wide range of interests, served as local historian,
and learned to use a computer at age 85. Survivors include many nieces
and nephews.
McCLELLAND Harold Franklin McClelland, 76, Xenia Friends, Ohio,
March 15, 2001. Harold was born January 12, 1925, to Robert P. and Grace
Amanda Powers McClelland. He married Mary Louise Jones on October 20,
1944. A member of Xenia Friends Meeting since 1952, he served as a trustee,
usher, and member of Ministry and Counsel, also doing much of the groundskeeping
at the meetinghouse. He farmed with his family before becoming a mechanic.
He was preceded in death by his brother, George Robert McClelland, and
his sister, Anna Louise Waldren. Survivors include his wife, Mary Louise
Jones McClelland; two daughters, Pat Hackney and Judy Andrews; one son,
Doug; seven grandchildren; and two great grandsons.
METZGER W. Gwendolene Metzger, 78, Wabash Friends, Indiana, April
10, 2001. Gwendolene was born on November 18, 1921 to Kenneth and Pauline
Pansier Powell. She married Francis L. Metzger on December 27, 1941. She
was an active member of her meeting, and the United Society of Friends
Women. She was a kitchen designer for Wabash County Farm Bureau Co-Op,
and also worked as an office assistant for Dr. Lee W. Yoder as well as
at Honeywell, Inc. She was a member of the Cozy Homemakers Extension Club.
She was preceded in death by two brothers. Survivors include her husband,
Francis L. Metzger; one daughter, Nancy G. Frank; one son, Ken L. Metzger;
one sister, Juanita Morton; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
NASH Grace Nash, 88, Shiloh Friends, Alexandria, Indiana, April
5, 2001. Grace was born August 21, 1912, to John and Alice Kuhn. On August
17, 1940, she married Sterrett Nash. Grace was a recorded minister and
co-pastored with her husband for 40 years. After retirement, they ministered
to Native Americans in Oklahoma and Alabama for ten years, as well as
serving three summers as missionaries to Friend Schools in Ramallah, West
Bank, Jordan. She attended Kansas University, Cleveland Bible Institute,
and graduated from Chicago Evangelistic Institute. She then graduated
from Marion College and taught in elementary schools in Madison County
for 34 years, retiring in 1977. She was preceded in death by one brother
and three sisters. Survivors include her husband, Sterrett Nash; her daughter,
Jannice Peterson; her son, Gary Nash; and three grandchildren.
PHILLIPS Howard Lee Phillips, 80, Forbush Friends, Greensboro,
North Carolina, April 10, 2001. Howard Phillips was born August 15, 1920,
to V.A. and Ella Davis Phillips. He was a retired farmer. He was preceded
in death by one son, Grady Lee Phillips; one sister, Edna Groce; and three
brothers, Clyde, Johnny Wade, and Paul Phillips. Survivors include his
wife, Lillian Wooten Phillips; one daughter, Frances Bertotti; one son,
George Phillips; one sister, Ethel Smith; ten grandchildren, Shannon and
Mandy Phillips, Brandy Brandon, Sherri Crutchley, Myra Hicks, Heather
and Candace Bertotti, Charlene Marhenke, Darlene Eads and Robin Campbell;
and two great-grandchildren, Brooke Crutchley and Madilyn Brandon.
RAMEY Helen R. Ramey, 77, Fountain City Friends, Indiana, April
15, 2001. Helen was born July 18,1923 to James A. and Emma R. Wantz Courtney.
She was active in her meeting and belonged to the United Society of Friends
Women. She had been employed at Regency Manor. She was preceded in death
by her husband, Glenn M. Ramey; two brothers, Earl and Paul Courtney;
and her sister, Margaret Courtney. Survivors include two daughters, Glenda
Brawley and Rebecca Waggamon; and eight grandchildren.
SARVER Keith Sarver, 83, Garden Grove Friends, California, April
10, 2001. Born June 25, 1917, on a farm near Searsboro, Iowa, Keith attended
a local consolidated school. After graduation, he married his high school
sweetheart, June Fleener, in 1937. At 23 Keith became a Christian and
soon felt a call to ministry. He attended Chicago Evangelistic Institute
and Earlham College. In 1949 the Sarvers became Friends Evangelists, traveling
among Friends Churches in the Midwest. In 1952, he began as pastor of
Wabash Friends Church, Indiana. In 1955, Keith answered a call to pastor
the Yorba Linda Friends Church, California and three years later, he was
appointed General Superintendent of California Yearly Meeting, a position
he held for 24 years. He then pastored Pasadena Friends Church. Keith
served on the General Board of Friends United Meeting, and the Boards
of George Fox College and Azusa Pacific University plus visited many mission
fields. Survivors include his wife, June and their foster daughter, Beverly
Gruszczyk.
SEDLEY Anna May Babb Sedley, 86, Corinth Friends, Ivor, Virginia,
March 15, 2001. The daughter of John E. and Lelia Raiford Babb, Anna was
a birthright member of Corinth Friends and active in the W.N.Y. Bible
Class. Survivors include her sister, Agnes L. Babb and brother, C.J. Babb.
SHELTON Greta M. Shelton, 88, Liberty Friends, North Carolina,
March 17, 2001. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Robert
Shelton. Survivors include five sons, Wade, George, Jimmy, Paul and Steve
Shelton; three daughters, Polly Hinshaw, Lee Thomas and Lucy Wilson; a
brother, Frank Mabe Jr.; four sisters, Josie Lineberry, Beulah Jackson,
Lillie Miller, and Maude Glidewell; 17 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren.
STONE Kristine Angelia Stone, 31, Ararat Friends, North Carolina,
March 26, 2001. Kristine was born January 11, 1970, to Jimmy Dale and
Libbie Johnson Inman. She was an elder in her meeting, a member and past
president of the Mount Airy Jaycees, and a member and past president of
the Mount Airy Junior Woman's Club. She was employed by Spencer's, Inc.
and was a graduate of Appalachian State University. Survivors include
her husband, Michael Stone; one daughter, Ashlyn Kristine Stone; her parents,
Jimmy and Libbie J. Inman; two sisters, Kimberly Clayton, and Kelly Hull;
her grandmother, Grace W. Inman; two nieces, Katelyn Stone and Bethany
Clayton; one nephew, Stratton Stone; and her aunt and uncle, Lena and
Herbert Atkins.
STYERS Roy Hampton Styers, 76, Pilot View Friends, Yadkinville,
North Carolina, March 24, 2001. Roy was born December 28, 1924, to Walter
and Ethel Williams Styers. He was retired from the Sara Lee Corporation.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Shore Styers; three daughters, Janet
Crissman, Debra Wiles, and Lisa Steelman; three grandchildren, Cody Crissman,
Tyler and Danielle Steelman; and four half-sisters, Sally Williams, Mollie
Brown, Blanche Zabota, and Beulah Williard.
WALL Beatrice Virginia Shinault Wall, 81, Pine Hill Friends, Ararat,
North Carolina, March 29, 2001. Beatrice Wall was born October 31, 1919,
to Boson E. and Pearl Esther Hawks Shinault. She was preceded in death
by her husband, Lester Newsome Wall; two sisters, Mary Ray and Evelyn
Shinault; and three brothers, Daniel, Ted, and Rufus Shinault. Survivors
include one daughter, Joyce OÕNeal; two sons, Jimmy and Johnny; seven
sisters, Violet Mitchell, Ruby Shinault, Betty Kiger, Wilma Marion, Mabel
Beck, Faith Shinault, and Bonnie Rowinsky; seven grandchildren; and seven
great-grandchildren.
WHITEHEAD Thomas Eugene Whitehead, 90, Cane Creek Friends, Snow
Camp, North Carolina, March 17, 2001. Thomas was the son of Adolphus and
Izora Dixon Whitehead. A retired employee of Burlington Industries, he
belonged to the Cane Creek Men's Meeting. He was preceded in death by
two wives, Kathleen Thompson Whitehead and Verla Johnson Whitehead. Survivors
include a daughter, Lydia W. McBane; a son, Wallace Whitehead; a stepdaughter,
Daile T. Lewis; a stepson, Ray Thompson; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
WILSON Pauline Teague Wilson, 89, Prosperity Friends Meeting,
Southern Pines, North Carolina, March 30, 2001. Pauline was a former Sunday
School superintendent, a member of the Moore County Home Demonstration
Club, and a retired supervisor at the Southern Garment Company. She was
preceded in death by her husband, Gurney Wilson. Survivors include one
son, Vernon R. Wilson; one daughter, Carol W. Dunn; one sister, Vada T.
Phillips; four grandchildren, Joan Chartier, Kim Wilson, Stephanie Moore
and Steve Dunn; and two great-grandchildren, Brittanie and Joseph Moore.
WOOTEN Annie Angell Wooten, 90, Forbush Friends, Greensboro, North
Carolina, February 26, 2001. Annie was born on March 13, 1910 to M.S.
and Maggie Norman Angell. She worked at the Winston-Salem carbon plant
during World War II, and after it closed she worked for Western Electric
until her retirement in 1975. One of the oldest members of her meeting,
she was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Ralph Wooten. Survivors
include one son, Charles Robert Wooten Sr.; one grandson, Charles Robert
Wooten Jr.; and two granddaughters, Rachel Lane Wooten and Samantha Claire
Wooten.
