Deaths
ALBRIGHT Anna Lee Williams Albright, 82, Rocky River Friends, May 2, 2001.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Max Albright, and her brother,
Thomas Williams. Survivors include one son, James; three sisters, Mrs.
Allen Wright, Josephine Nixon, and Carlene Perry; three grandchildren;
and eight great-grandchildren.
AVERY Iris Emily (Green) Avery, 93, Second Friends Church, Indianapolis,
Indiana, April 2, 2001. She was born December 27, 1907 and was a long
time member of Second Friends Meeting. Iris was preceded in death by her
husband Hiram Avery and two children, Elsa and George. Survivors include
four daughters, Linda, Inez, Madonna, and Madelyn.
BANNON Willa Bannon, 88, Courtland Avenue Friends, Kokomo, Indiana, May
6, 2001. She was born February 22, 1913 to Frank and Mae (Snodgrass) Tennell.
In April 1938, she married Clarence Bannon and was an active member of
her meeting and USFWI. Her husband Clarence and two sisters preceded her
in death. Survivors include her son, Dave Bannon; two grandchildren, Amy
and Tara Bannon; and a brother, Glenn.
COOK Ralph Edward Cook, 71, Cobscook Friends, Pembroke, Maine, May 9,
2001. The son of Lindley and Corona Rayle Cook, he graduated from Earlham
College. During the Korean War, he served time in prison as a conscientious
objector. In 1955, he married Jane E. Cook. Survivors include his wife
Jane; two step-children, James Estes and Lea Sutton; and two step-granddaughters.
FESMIRE Ruby Hilliard Fesmire, 69, Edward Hill Friends, Bonlee, North
Carolina, April 21, 2001. Ruby taught her meeting's Adult Sunday School
class for 45 years, served as an elder and in the church choir. Ruby was
preceded in death by her brother, Howard Hilliard. Survivors include her
husband, Paul E. Fesmire; two sisters, Kathleen Burke and Margaret Phillips;
four grandchildren, Matthew, Luke, Maggi, and Aaron Brady.
GIVENS Shirley Ann (Butler) Givens, 59, Chicago Fellowship of Friends,
April 4, 2001. Shirley Givens was born January 9, 1942. She married Otha
Lee Givens on December 6, 1960. She served as a Trustee and Elder. Her
husband, Otha, and her brother, Charles William Coleman, Jr., preceded
her in death. Survivors include two daughters, Gloria Renee Riley and
LaVerne Mayomi; one son, Michael; five brothers, Herbert Butler and Reginald,
Lawrence, Ronald, and Anthony Coleman; two sisters, Devra Luellen and
Dorothy Coleman; and ten grandchildren.
HANING Theodore Roosevelt Haning, 76, High Point Friends, North Carolina,
May 11, 2001. Ted was born April 11, 1925, He served his meeting in many
capacities and was also active in Deep River Quarterly Meeting and North
Carolina Yearly Meeting. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Melita
Eldridge Haning; his son, Eldridge; five brothers, Robert, Edward, James,
Dave, and Richard; grandchildren, Lynn Jackson and Gary Haning, and great-grandchildren,
Mary Grace and Katie Lynn Jackson.
HARDY Ann Lea Hardy, Union Cross Friends, Yadkinville, North Carolina,
May 8, 2001. An active member of her meeting, she sang in the choir and
played guitar. Survivors include her husband, Billy C. Hardy; one daughter,
Debbie Sharp; one son, Joe Jessmer; two grandsons, Brandon and Joshua
Jessmer; three sisters, Betty Smith, Clara Carr and Mary Ellen Day; and
two brothers, Bill and Gene Snodgrass.
HERENDEEN Virginia Wyman Herendeen, 79, Farmington Friends, Macedon,
New York, April 21, 2001. Virginia Herendeen was February 14, 1922. She
held many positions of leadership in her meeting and taught Sunday School
for many years. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Gordon and
Clifford Wyman, and her grandson, Joshua Stephen Herendeen. Survivors
include three sons, Roger, Ronald and Richard Herendeen, and six grandchildren,
Ben, Jonathan, Spencer, Kristin, Stacie and Jessica Herendeen.
KIRK Helen Kirk, 82, Anderson First Friends, Indiana, May 2, 2001. Helen
was born May 4, 1918. She was member of USFWI. Survivors include her husband,
Fred; her daughter, Carla Crowe; her brother, Glen; two grandchildren
and two great grandchildren.
LAWSON Ida Ross Hutchens Lawson, 75, Forbush Friends, Greensboro, North
Carolina, April 14, 2001. Ida was born February 23, 1926. She was preceded
in death by her husband, Bill Lawson, and brother, Ralph Hutchens. Survivors
include one daughter, Nancy I. Williams; two stepsons, Michael and Jerry
Lawson; one stepdaughter, Lisa Lawson; three sisters, Betty Wooten, Dot
Crews and Nell Bryant; one brother, Reynolds Hutchens; one granddaughter,
Diane Asbelle; and three stepgrandchildren.
LEONARD Garnett D. Leonard, 87, Tangier Friends, Indiana, December 8,
2000. Leonard Garret was born November 16, l9l8. On December 3, l936,
he married Bonnie Y. Hall and farmed all his life in his home township.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Evon. Survivors include Bonnie
Leonard, his wife of 63 years; three sons, Robert, David, and Gary; two
daughters, Virginia VanHook and Vivian Bartley; 14 grandchildren and 18
great-grandchildren.
MACON Virginia Ruth Hodgin Macon, 80, Asheboro Friends, North Carolina,
April 5, 2001. Virginia Macon was born March 10, 1921 and married Raeford
R. Macon on June 26, 1941. She attended Holly Spring Meeting and in 1951
transferred her membership to Asheboro Friends. She was a member of the
choir, the Friendly Friends Sunday School Class, USFWI, the Faith Fellowship
group, served on various committees, and was the Meeting organist for
over 35 years. She was active in North Carolina Yearly Meeting, serving
on the Committee on Creative Aging. She was named "Woman of the Year"
by Asheboro Friends in 1986 and was also a charter member of the Asheboro
Christian WomenÕs Club. Survivors include her husband, Raeford Macon;
two sisters, Henrietta H. Dorsett and Lillian H. Delk; one daughter, Clarajo
Macon Pleasants; one son, Dexter Macon; four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
MATHIS Nellie Allen Mathis, 97, Cane Creek Friends, Snow Camp, North
Carolina, April 22, 2001. An active member of her meeting, she taught
the Young Adult Sunday School Class for decades. She was preceded in death
by her husband, G.D. Mathis; one sister, Lucy Allen; and three brothers,
Willard, Graham, and Charles Fletcher Allen. Survivors include three sisters,
Grace Patton, Olive Simmons and Marjorie Parvin; two brothers, George
and Robert Allen.
NEWLIN Alfred Cyrus Newlin, 75, West Grove Friends, Snow Camp, North
Carolina, May 4, 2001. Alfred Newlin was a retired farmer. Survivors include
his wife, Janell Moody Newlin; three sons, Barry, Gerald, and William
Newlin; one daughter, Cynthia Newlin; one sister, Martha N. Hartley; and
six grandchildren.
REDDING Peggy Moffitt Redding, 67, Marlboro Friends, Sophia, North Carolina,
May 3, 2001, High Point, North Carolina. Peggy was born June 2, 1933 and
on April 10, 1955, she married Carr Vaden Redding, Jr. Peggy was an active
member of her meeting and served as secretary, organist and as a member
of USFWI, the Handbell Choir and the Fellowship Class. Survivors include
her husband, Carr Vaden Redding, Jr, two sons, Curtis and Carr Redding,
III; one daughter, Susan R. Jones; her mother, Gladys Moffitt; and three
grandchildren, Christopher Redding, David and Carolina Jones.
REYNOLDS Tamara "Tammy" Reynolds, 29, Anderson First Friends,
Indiana, April 23, 2001. Tammy Reynolds was born July 4, 1971 and married
Kent Reynolds March 31, 1991. She enjoyed working in the Food Pantry.
Survivor include her husband, Kent; two daughters, Jessica and Brittany;
a son, Kent Junior; her parents, and two brothers.
SPEER Margaret L. Speer, 60, Mount Carmel Friends, May 19, 2001. She
was born in Forsyth County on January 1, 1941. Survivors include her husband,
T. Leroy Speer; her son, David Speer; three daughters, Annette Martin,
Linda Hicks and Kathy Hutchens; four sisters, Shelby Johnson, Patricia
Adams, Janet Davis, Betty Grooms, and eight grandchildren, Brandon and
William Martin, Mitch and Jenna Speer, Amanda and Julie Hicks, and Neil
and Rachael Hutchens.
YORK Florence Obitha Shore York, 91, Deep Creek Friends, Yadkinville,
North Carolina, May 7, 2001. Florence York was born April 8, 1910. She
was preceded in death by her husband, Fred E. York; two sisters, Nellie
Shore and Mae Adams; and two brothers, Paul and John Shore. Survivors
include one daughter, Dorothy; one son, David; and granddaughter, Lynn.
WAGONER Homer Holcomb Wagoner, 93, Harmony Grove Friends, Yadkinville,
North Carolina, June 4, 2001. Homer Wagoner was born Aug. 24, 1907 and
married Mabel Holton. He was also a member of the Yadkin Friends Fellowship.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Mabel Holton Wagoner;
and his brother John Wagoner. Survivors include two sons, Daniel Eugene
and James Eric; and three grandchildren, Erin, Dustin and Alexis Wagoner.
WHITE Ethel Waller White, 73, Friends Union, Tobaccoville, North Carolina,
April 28, 2001. Ethel White was born September 27, 1927. She was a member
of USFWI and served as an elder. She was preceded in death by her sister,
Ruth W. Allen, and two brothers, Ralph O. and William G. Waller. Survivors
include her husband, Eulis Carlo White Sr.; one daughter, Wynn Callaway;
four sons, Eulis C., Jr., Robert Nolan, Joseph William and Timothy Andrew;
seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Lillian
Pell.
WICKER Gertrude K. Wicker, 83, Rocky River Friends, Siler City, North
Carolina, April 21, 2001. Gertrude was a faithful member of her meeting.
Survivors include her husband, Cletus Wicker; two daughters, Ruby W. Davis
and Judith W. Butler; one son, Ricky Wicker; four sisters, Inez Moon,
Nannie Mae Hinshaw, Lottie Carter and Janiece Lowe; one brother, Garland
Keller; and four grandchildren.
WILLIAMS James Wesley Williams, 64, Pilot View Friends, Yadkinville,
North Carolina, April 20, 2001. James was born April 27, 1936. He attended
Yadkin Friends Fellowship, and Sunday school for 50 years with a perfect
attendance record. Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Linda Hutchens
Williams; one daughter, Ann Baity; one son, Perry Lee Williams; four grandchildren,
Gray and Jessica Williams and Brooke and Adam Baity; and one sister, Beatrice
Hobson.
