Dear Reader
Living in the world as a Christian is often difficult. Challenges
to living faithfully present themselves unexpectedly.
One way to be prepared for these challenges is to live by a strict
set of rules. The problem comes as one rule leads to another and
another until there are more than a person can remember and keep
diligently. Jesus spoke against this legalism often, always calling
people to a personal relationship with God.
Our Queries are used to give guidelines for living without legalism.
This month Quaker Life considers Query 6, labeled wither
"Personal Conduct" or "Standards of Life."
Do you live with simplicity, moderation, and integrity? Are
you punctual in keeping promises, careful in speech, just and compassionate
in all your dealings with others? Do you take care that your spiritual
growth is not sacrificed to busyness but instead integrates your
lifeÕs activities? Are your recreations consistent with Quaker values;
do they refresh your spirit and renew your body and mind? (New
England Yearly Meeting)
Australian Peter Sumner considers George Fox's writing, "Walk
according to the rule of the Spirit of God" and its application
today.
Maine Friend Catherine Whitmire has written a new book introducing
Quaker simplicity to non-Friends.
As always, walking in the Spirit requires peacemaking. Peace Notes
reports on the Historic Peace Churches Consultation in Switzerland
as well as their letter to the Churches. Peacemakers and their activities
are also spotlighted.
Fox wrote words that speak to us as we live our daily lives: "Friends
are to 'walk' as [Christ] walked and not only to talk as He talked;
for there are too many talkers and too few walkers in Christ; my
desire is there may be more." (Epistle 353)
May we as Friends be "walkers with Christ" in our world
daily!
Blessings in Christ,
