Deaths
AULT Helen M. Fellow Ault, 86, South Marion Friends, Indiana, October
2, 2000. Helen was a member of her meeting for 54 years. Her husband,
N. Melvin Ault, preceded her in death. Survivors include two daughters,
Marie Siler and Jacqueline Thompson; seven grandchildren, five-great-grandchildren,
and three great-great-grandchildren.
BIGELOW Paul J. Bigelow, 64, Hadley Friends, Danville, Indiana, June
24, 2001. Paul was born May 11, 1937 to Karl and Margaret Bigelow. After
living most of his life in Pelham, Massachusetts, he retired to Coatesville,
Indiana and worked for the George School Alumni Fund. Survivors include
his wife, Marilyn; two daughters, Beth and Rebecca; one son, Mark; and
six grandchildren, Sarah, Matthew, Heather, Nicholas, Amanda, and Joshua.
BROWN Francis A. Brown, 79, Carlisle Friends, Pennsylvania, April 9,
2001. Frank was born December 12 1921, and married Edith F. Farley on
June 30, 1945. During World War II, he served as a conscientious objector
under the auspices of AFSC. He was active in his meeting and noted for
his singing. Survivors include his wife, Edith; two sons, Timothy and
Thomas; two daughters, Deborah Hammack and Pamela Gibney; his sister,
Mary Hines; his brother, Robert, and eight grandchildren.
DEITZEL Betty Jane Deitzel, 64, Carlisle Friends, Pennsylvania, April
12, 2001. Betty was born May 2, 1936, to Frank and Lizzie Bradley. She
married Charles Deitzel in 1965. She had previously been a member of Madison,
Wisconsin Friends. She was active in her meeting as a former Clerk and
especially with the children, caring for many foster children herself
over the years. She also served on Yearly Meeting committees and traveled
to Kenya as Baltimore Yearly MeetingÕs representative to Friends World
Committee on Consultation. Survivors include her brother, Frank Bradley,
and many former foster children.
GURLEY Lloyd Edgar Gurley, 79, Pleasant Grove Friends, West York, Illinois,
May 24, 2001. Lloyd was born October 16, 1921 to Emery and James Gurley.
He married Jean Myers on June 6, 1948. He served his meeting in many different
capacities. Survivors include his wife, Jean; two sons, Bradley and Steven;
four grandchildren, Brandon, Amanda, Brian and Susan Gurley, and a sister
Leola Gurley Guyer.
HENDERSON Anna Edgerton Henderson, 97, Friendship Meeting, Greensboro,
North Carolina, June 13, 2001. Anna was born July 1, 1903 to Frederick
Mitchell and Clara Mae Winder Edgerton. She married Sidney Henderson and
they attended Clear Creek Meeting, Richmond, Indiana. She also worked
with AFSC in Des Moines, Iowa. Survivors include her sister, Melva Hiatt;
a stepson, Arnold C. Henderson; a step-granddaughter Rachel Henderson.
LEE Gilbert M. Lee, 84, South Marion Friends, Indiana, March 24, 2001.
Gilbert was a member of his meeting for 55 years. His wife Mary E. Holmes
preceded him in death. Survivors include two daughters, Suzanne Miller
and Sondra Atkinson; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
MILLS Emily Carolyn Mills, 51, Mooresville Friends, Indiana, March 12,
2001. Emily was born May 10, 1948 to John E. and Miriam Hoover Mills.
She was active in her meeting and a financial trustee of Western Yearly
Meeting. She served on a committee of Western and Indiana Yearly Meetings
with a concern for their relationship to Earlham College. Survivors include
her parents; a brother, Stephen; a sister, Margaret Jane Barnes.
MILLS David Mills, 84, West Newton Friends, Indianapolis, Indiana, July
12, 2001. David was born September 4, 1916 to Leland and Lucretia (Furnas)
Mills. On August 15, 1941, he married Wilma Barnett. He was active in
his meeting and was a notable singer. He was preceded in death by his
wife Wilma; a sister, Clarice Hale; two brothers, Leland and Lowell, and
one granddaughter. Survivors include four sons, David, Burton, Lawrence,
and Roger; two daughters, Sylvia Graves and Patrice Stephenson; two brothers,
Robert and Glenn; twelve grandchildren, and a great-grandson.
PERKINS Bernice, 87, South Marion Friends, Indiana, May 22, 2001. Bernice
was a life-long member of her meeting. Survivors include a daughter, Becky
Fort; two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
SARVER Keith Sarver, 64, Garden Grove Friends, California, April 10,
2001. Keith was born June 28, 1917, and married June Fleener in 1937.
He pastored Friends meetings in Watseka, Illinois; Fountain City, and
Wabash, Indiana; and Yorba Linda, and Pasadena, California. He was Superintendent
of California Yearly Meeting for 24 years. He served on the boards of
both George Fox College and Azusa Pacific College, and helped found the
Friends Center at Azusa Pacific University. Survivors include his wife,
June and his foster daughter, Beverly Gruszczyk.
SMITH Opal E Smith, 84, First Friends, Greensboro, North Carolina, July
6, 2001. Opal was born December 12, 1916, to Noah and Martha Taylor Perry.
She served as a missionary in Jamaica and Kenya with her husband Logan,
and also served with him in Indiana, Wilmington, and North Carolina Yearly
Meetings. Opal was preceded in death by her husband and five siblings.
Survivors include two daughters, Betty Brumbaugh and Patty Burgess; two
sons, Bill and Tom; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
WATERMAN George C. Waterman, 65, Arba Friends, Lynn, Indiana, June 2,
2001. Survivors include his wife of 41 years, three daughters, and five
sons.
WHITE Helen Lodholz White, 98, First Friends, Whittier, California, April
24, 2001. Helen was born March 8, 1903. She married Gustav White in July,
1940. She was an active member of her meeting for over 60 years. Survivors
include several brothers and sisters.
