Deaths

CORBETT James A. Corbett, 67, Pima Friends, Tucson Arizona, August 2, 2001. James Corbett was born October 8, 1933, and was raised in Casper, Wyoming. He graduated from Colgate University, received a master's in philosophy from Harvard and a library science degree from USC. He married Patricia Collins in 1963. He was a co-founder of the Sanctuary Movement, speaking and writing extensively on behalf of Central American political refugees and standing trial for violating immigration laws before being ultimately acquitted. He was also active in Fellowship of Reconciliation and the AFSC in their work opposing the Vietnam War. In addition to working as a librarian and teacher in various settings, he also helped found Saguaro Juniper, a community that restores and protects rangeland, and the Cascabel Hermitage Association as well. Survivors include his wife, Pat; three children, Laura Lynn Corbett Longtine, Geoffrey Ross Corbett, and Megan Elizabeth Corbett Schaeffer; and three grandchildren.

CORNEY Sylvia Hoover Corney, 72, Eastern Hills Friends, August 19, 2001. Sylvia Corney was born May 26, 1929 to Harold and Esther Spahn Hoover. She married Glen Corney on June 22, 1951, and was active at Cincinnati Friends. She was a founding member of Clifton Friends Meeting (now Eastern Hills) in 1972. She worked on peace issues and in support of Native Americans. Survivors include a brother, Keith; three daughters, Deborah, Elizabeth and Miriam; one son, David; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

GRIFFIN Paul Griffin, 70, Winchester Friends, Indiana, August 31, 2001. Paul Griffin was born February 12, 1931, to James and Hazel Crim Griffin. He was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Gladys L. Teel Griffin and two brothers, Robert and Kenneth. Survivors include two sons, Marvin and Gary; two sisters, Bernice Crim and Frances Skinner; and four grandchildren.

HILTY Hiram Horace Hilty, 88, New Garden Friends, North Carolina, October 24, 2001. Hiram Hilty was born April 2, 1913, to Peter P. and Barbara Koller Hilty. He graduated from Bluffton College, Ohio, received a Bachelor of Divinity from Hartford Theological Seminary and a doctorate in history from Duke University. He served as pastor of Clinton Corners Meeting, New York, and then went with his family to serve in Cuba under the American Friends Mission Board. Later he taught Spanish at Guilford College and later became head of the Department of Foreign Languages, retiring in 1978. He remained active in missionary work to Cuba, making eight trips altogether, and also worked with Mexican Friends. The author of five books and many journal articles, he also belonged to the Greensboro Historical Society. Survivors include his wife of more than 60 years, Janet Hilty; three daughters, Louise Feagins, Esther Searls and Ruth Ann Chatfield; two brothers, Calvin and Peter; one sister, Dorothy Mae Baumgartner; four grandchildren, Debra Yousef, Colette and Peter Searls and Elizabeth Chatfield.

HOSKINS Lewis Wendell Hoskins, 90, Shrewsbury Friends, New Jersey, August 5, 2001. Lewis Hoskins was born March 13, 1911, to Alvin and Maggie Mills Hoskins of Pleasant Plains, Iowa. A graduate of William Penn College, he earned his Bachelor of Divinity degree in 1947 from Hartford Theological Seminary. He married Elizabeth Auger on May 22, 1944. He served as pastor of Allen's Neck and Smith's Neck Meetings in Massachusetts, at Leesburg, Ohio, and at Clinton Corners, Glens Falls and Collins Meetings, New York. A social worker, he worked at the Jamesburg Training School under the New Jersey Department of Corrections until retiring in 1980. As a member of New York Yearly Meeting he served as member and clerk of various committees and often represented NYYM. He served for 15 years on the Board of Peace and Social Concerns of Five Years Meeting and later FUM, and served for 18 years on FGC's Central Committee. He was also active in FCNL, especially during its formative years. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth; one sister, Irene Van Wagner; two nephews, John and George Van Wagner; and one niece, Marcia Jean Van Wagner.

LETSON Joseph William, 78, Fairview Friends, Ohio, September 18, 2001. Joseph Letson was born in Columbia, Missouri, to Orrin W. and Ethel Letson. He graduated from the College of the Ozarks and from Chicago Theological Seminary, and also studied at Hebrew Union College, Cincinnati. He worked in civilian public service during World War II, and worked for two years in Belize as a Peace Corps volunteer after retirement. He served as pastor of Fairview Friends, and also served on boards and committees of various Friends organizations, including AFSC. Survivors include his wife, Mary; two daughters, Joan and Ruth; three sons, Philip, William and Thomas; one brother, Robert; and seven grandchildren.

MONKS William H. Monks, 76, Winchester Friends, Indiana, September 18, 2001. William Monks was born June 1, 1925, to Merrett R. and Virginia Hedgepeth Monks. He was active in his meeting and served in the local Meals on Wheels program. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Bettye L. Norcross Monks; one son, Merret; one daughter, Kathy Marsheutz; and a granddaughter, Melissa Sheaks.

NEWHALL Gail Newby Newhall, 75, Minneapolis Friends, Minnesota, July 25, 2001. Gail Newhall was born in Des Moines, Iowa, to James and Bertha Newby. She attended William Penn College and in 1951 married William Newhall. She was employed by the Minneapolis Star Tribune. She was preceded in death by her husband, William and one brother, Richard Newby. Survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth Olson; a son, David Newhall; a twin sister, Joy Newby Cronk; and a grandson, Jason Olson.

WOOD Frederick E. Wood, 88, First Friends, Richmond, Indiana, October 17, 2001. Frederick Wood was born April 27, 1913, to Harry D. and Mary O. Lindley Wood in Fairmont, Indiana. He graduated from DePauw University and received a master of English literature from the University of Wisconsin. He taught at Western Military Academy, Alton, Illinois, and at Fairmont High School. He was editor of Quaker Life from 1968 until his retirement in 1978. He was active in his meeting as well as in the Indiana State Teachers Association, Yokefellows and the Lions Club. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth Johnson Wood, and by three brothers and one sister. Survivors include his second wife, Virginia Goldsboro Lyon Wood; one son, Thomas; one daughter, Deborah Haile; two stepdaughters, Nancy Miller and Rebecca Deweiler; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
