Deaths
ADAMS Betty Jean Brown Adams, 71, November 7, 2001. Betty Jean Adams
was born on October 22, 1930, to Rufus King and Carrie Hobson Brown. She
was a Shaklee Products supervisor in Forsyth County for 26 years. She
was preceded in death by a sister, Raby Douglas, and six brothers, Foster,
Hugh, Max, Austin, Glenn, and Gilmore Brown. Survivors include her husband,
Howard Adams; a brother, Carl; three sons, Jerry, Steve and Howard; four
grandchildren, Ryan, Taylor and Savannah Adams and Andrea Mast.
ANDREW Rachel Braxton Andrew, 88, Spring Friends, January 4, 2002. Rachel
Andrew was the daughter of Thomas Duff and Leanner Blair Braxton. She
was a member of the Alamance County Home Demonstration Club. She was preceded
in death by her husband, Dewey Bernard Andrew, and a son, Thomas Weldon
Andrew. Survivors include three sons, Dewey V., Howard Lee, and Brodie
Keith Andrew; one sister, Alma Braxton; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren;
and six great-grandchildren.
BELL Adele Harrison Bell, 87, Langley Hills Friends, Virginia, Friday,
January 4, 2002. Adele Bell was born in Anniston, Alabama, on July 25,
1914, to Groce and Irene Harrison. She received a bachelor of arts in
English in 1935 from Judson College in Marion, Alabama, and taught English
and Spanish in Union Springs. In 1942 she married B. Tartt Bell. She pursued
a Masters in English at Columbia University and also studied design and
drawing at several institutions. She was a civil rights and peace activist
for much of her life. Survivors include her husband of 59 years, B. Tartt
Bell; a daughter, Bethany T. Bell; two sons, Donald H. Bell and Timothy
H. Bell; a granddaughter, Susan S. Bell; and a sister, Daisy Usry.
BRAY James Poindexter Bray Jr., 56, Harmony Grove Friends, Yadkinville,
January 26, 2002. James Bray was born November 1, 1945, in Surry County
to James P. Bray Sr. and Merline Booe Bray. He retired from R .J. Reynolds
Tobacco Co. and was a member of Harmony Masonic Lodge. Survivors include
his wife of 37 years, Carolyn Reavis Bray; a daughter, Angela Bray Merryman;
a son, James P. Bray; a grandson; James P. "Dex" Bray IV; and
his mother, Merline Booe Bray.
BROWNE Edith Carlton Brown, 79, Plainfield Friends, Vermont, November
19, 2001. Edith Brown was born to Charles E. and Georgia Sherry Carlton.
In 1945, she married Gordon Browne, Jr. After 13 years in Illinois, she
moved with her family to Cotuit, Massachusetts, and served as presiding
clerk of both Sandwich Meeting and of South Yarmouth Preparative Meeting,
also serving as newsletter editor for the latter. She helped found the
Cape Cod branch of the NAACP and along with her husband had been a military
tax resister since the early 1960s. In later life she and her husband
served two years at the United Nations representing Quakers. She also
traveled widely in support of her husbandŐs ministry on FWCC. In 1990
she joined Plainfield Friends, where she was newsletter editor for many
years. Survivors include her husband, Gordon Browne; four daughters, Sarah
Polito, Rebecca Lafferty, Deborah Carpilio and Elizabeth Klaus; two sons,
Charles and Richard; fourteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
CAPPS Preston Tyler Capps, 12, Plainfield Friends, Siler City, North
Carolina, January 22, 2002. Preston was a seventh grader at Silk Hope
Elementary School, where he was a member of the Drama Club. He was active
in his meeting, and belonged to the Junior Sunday school class youth group
and the hand bell choir. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather,
Leslie Capps. Survivors include his father, Arthur R. (Buddy) Capps and
mother Lou Anne Johnson Capps; a brother, Marshall Capps; maternal grandmother,
Judy Stevens Johnson; maternal grandfather, Robert Lee Johnson; paternal
grandmother, Ruth Reynolds; and step-paternal grandmother, Annette Capps.
COOPER Charlie Calvin Cooper, 79, White Plains Friends, Mount Airy, North
Carolina, December 4, 2001. Charlie Cooper was the son of J.N. and Cora
Wright Cooper. A World War II veteran, he received his bachelor's degree
from Guilford College, his master's degree from Appalachian College, and
was an educator for 31 years in the North Carolina public schools. Survivors
include his wife, Bertie Robertson Cooper; two daughters, Lynn C. Faust
and Susan C. Wiseman; one son, Joseph G. Cooper; a sister, Peggy Keating;
a brother, Jack Cooper; four granddaughters, Jennifer L. Cooper, Jessica
C. Wiseman, Jacqueline M. Wiseman and Phoebe T. Cooper; and four grandsons,
Michael M. Faust, Joshua D. Faust, Calvin J. Cooper and Bennett E. Cooper.
CRANFILL Earle Lee Cranfill, 87, Harmony Grove Friends, Yadkinville,
North Carolina, December 8, 2001. Earl Cranfill was born August. 4, 1914,
in Yadkin County to James Monroe and Lora B. Royall Cranfill. Before his
retirement he owned and operated Cranfill's Florist, the Par-Tee Driving
Range and Putt-Putt Golf. He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace
Casstevens Cranfill; one daughter, Rita Cranfill; and one son, Earle Kent
Cranfill. Survivors include one daughter, Pattie Haire; three grandchildren,
Danny Haire, Angel Haire, and Debbie Burcham; one brother, Carl Cranfill;
and several nieces and nephews.
CRIM Clinton Linville Crim, 72, Westfield Friends, North Carolina, September
20, 2001. Clinton Crim was born March 25, 1929, in Forsyth County to Nathaniel
Thomas and Evie Alice Linville Crim. He was retired from Roadway and had
also worked at Brown Wooten Mills. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Survivors
include his wife, Betty Lou Bibey Crim; three daughters, Terry Lynn Crim
Smith, Beth Crim Lambert, and Cindy Crim Hartman; one son, Leonard Thomas
Crim; two sisters, Bettie and Juanita; five grandchildren, Tony and Emily
Flinchum, Kristi Lee and Anna Marie Crim, and Elizabeth Inman; and one
great-grandchild, Hayden Lee Inman.
CUNNINGHAM Donald S. Cunningham, 67, Harmony Grove Friends, North Carolina,
December 30, 2001. Donald Cunningham was born on November 26, 1934, to
Herman and Ruth Cunningham. He married Neita Yates on January 1, 1954.
He served in the U.S. Army for 22 years.. Following his retirement from
the military, he worked as a customer-service engineer for IBM. In 1994
he followed a call to ministry and became pastor of Farrs Chapel Friends
and Oak Grove Friends, both in Ball Play, Tennessee. Since 1999, Don had
been the pastor for Harmony Grove Friends. Survivors include a son, Don
Cunningham, Jr.; three daughters, Cathy Holte, Catrina Livesay and Gretchen
Dawson; two brothers, Junior and Glenn; eleven grandchildren, Dan, Matthew,
and Laura Cunningham, Brent, Philip and Travis Holte, Erin Holte Yearout,
Rachel and Hannah Livesay, and Sarah and Andrew Dawson; and two great-grandchildren.
EARLES John Thurston Earles, 52, Centre Friends, Randleman, North Carolina,
November 22, 2001. A native of Guilford County, John Earles was born October
25, 1949, to Thurston Earles and Mary Lee Holland Earles. A 1979 graduate
of North Carolina A&T State University, he received his bachelor of science
and masters of education degrees. A member of the Youth and Adolescent
National Strength and Conditioning Association, he was recognized both
locally and nationally for his professional work and had lectured widely.
He loved working with young people and had volunteered many hours and
financial resources to the youth of the community. Survivors include his
father, Thurston Earles; and two brothers, David Lee and James Matthew
Earles.
HARRIS Saul Hughes Harris, 87, Plainfield Friends, Siler City, North
Carolina, January 20, 2002. Saul Harris was a native of Chatham County
and a retired farmer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margie Isley
Harris. Survivors include one daughter, Sylvia Harris Crouse; one son,
William Darrell Harris; a grandson, Michael Lynn Emery; two great-granddaughters,
Taylor Danielle Emery and Kyndall Rae Emery; four sisters, Maude Kimrey,
Ollie Pike, Jewell Harris and Mary Gertrude Ray; a step-grandson, Darin
Caviness; and a step-great-grandson, Bryson Lee Caviness.
HUTCHENS Grady Frank Hutchens, 77, Deep Creek Friends, Yadkinville, North
Carolina, January 15, 2002. Grady Hutchens was born April 24, 1924 to
Cleveland and Ida H. Hutchens. He was preceded in death by his wife, Addys
Cline Hutchens; a grandchild, Stephanie Hutchens; five sisters; and three
brothers. Survivors include two daughters, Edith H. Parker and Ethel Cheney;
one son, Steve Hutchens; three brothers, Harvey Hutchens, Ray Hutchens,
and Elwood Hutchens; five grandchildren, Jason Myers, Tammy Myers, Angela
Myers, Nathan Shores and Amanda Hutchens; one great-grandchild, Emily
Shores; and several nieces and nephews.
KNOPP Marjorie Knopp, 77, Bethel Friends, Jonesboro,Indiana, January
26, 2002. Marjorie Knopp was born April 13, 1924, to Welcome C. and Martha
Rovien (Fox) Tuxford in Alexandria, Indiana. She married Joseph Knopp
in 1942. An active member of her meeting, she taught Sunday School and
served on several committees. She was also active in Child Evangelism
Fellowship. Survivors include her husband, Joseph of 53 years; three daughters,
Lynette Wolford, Martha Cooper and Leah Craig; a son, Wayne Knopp; a sister,
Nelda Orr; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
McCAIN Grace Barnsley Bradnack McCain, 97, First Friends, Greensboro,
North Carolina, January 18, 2002. Grace McCain was born in Rochester,
New York on April 23, 1904, to Charles Barnsley and Minerva Goodenough
Bradnack. She worked in Washington, D.C., for much of her life for the
Federal Government. She was a member of Chapter A of P.E.O., an artist
and a writer. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Asa
Madison McCain, Jr; and her granddaughter, Alane Marie McCain. Survivors
include four children, Martha M. Shoemaker, Eleanor M. Baker, Susan M.
Callens and Asa Madison McCain III; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren;
and two great-great-grandchildren.
MURPHY Florence Vestal Brown Murphy, 89, Union Cross Friends, Yadkinville,
North Carolina, November 21, 2001. Florence Murphy was born February 25,
1912, in Yadkin County to Charles Gurney and Lillie Shugart Vestal. She
retired from Carolina Insulation Yarn Company after 32 years of service.
Two husbands preceded her in death, Conard Brown and Sam Murphy. Survivors
include a sister, Lucy Barron; three brothers, Herbert, Paul and Blaine
Vestal; and several nieces and nephews.
MYERS-NORWOOD Lillian Wood Myers-Norwood, 89, Forsyth Friends, High Point,
North Carolina, January 20, 2002. Lillian Myers-Norwood was born in Yadkin
County on June 27, 1912, to W. Preston and Victoria Cummings Wood. She
was a charter member of the Forsyth Friends Meeting. She was employed
by Western Electric. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Fred
Noble Myers; five brothers and one sister. Survivors include her husband
of ten years, Charles A. Norwood; one daughter, Vickey Myers Duncan; one
granddaughter, Catherine Myers Duncan; and two stepsons, Charles Ronald
Norwood and Donald E. Norwood.
PARKER Mary Nell Parker, Mount Airy Friends, North Carolina, January
26, 2002. Mary Parker was born in Mount Airy to Weldon and Nell Saunders
Parker. She was a graduate of Guilford College and a retired teacher from
the Guilford County schools. Survivors include two cousins, Annice Saunders
and Frederick Saunders.
TRIPLETT John Jay Triplett Sr., 92, Providence Friends, Archdale, North
Carolina, December 25, 2001. John Triplett was born in Jonesville, North
Carolina. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Before retirement,
he owned and operatored the Triplett-Hobbs Realty, and the Village Flower
Shop as well as serving as a teacher and principal. A former member and
past president of the local Pleasant Garden Lions Club, he was also past
deputy district governor and zone chairman for the national organization.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Libby White Triplett. Survivors
include a son, John Jay Triplett Jr.; and grandchildren, John Jay Triplett
III and Mary Elizabeth Triplett.
TRIVETTE Edith Irene Trivette, 91, Winston-Salem Friends, North Carolina,
December 18, 2001. Edith Trivette retired as a school teacher with the
Guilford County schools after 40 years of service. Survivors include three
nephews, James Trivette, Samuel Trivette, and Russell Harwood; and two
nieces, Susan Trivette and Nancy Martin.
WARD Rebecca Poe Ward, 84, Centre Friends, Randleman, North Carolina,
January 17, 2002. Rebecca Ward was the daughter of John Willis and Rosa
Hobson Poe. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis Wesley Ward.
Survivors include two sons, Ray Ward and Jimmie Ward; one brother, John
Julius Poe; eight grandchildren, Barry, Jackie, Larry, Amy, Nicholas and
Nathan Ward, and Lisa and Timmy Langley; and six great-grandchildren,
Brandon, Kristie, Brian, Anna, Addie and Roby.
WISHON Fannie Ruth Wishon, 86, Deep Creek Friends, Yadkinville, North
Carolina, January 5, 2002. Fannie Wishon was born November 3, 1915, in
Yadkin County to Elsie M. and Mary Warden Wishon. Before her retirement,
she served the Veterans Administration as an executive secretary. She
was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Wishon, and a sister, Grace Wishon.
Survivors include three nephews, Ron Wishon, Larry Wishon and Tim Wishon;
and several cousins.
WORKMAN Effie Rayfield Workman, 94, Deep River Friends, North Carolina,
November 15, 2001. Effie Workman was born August 6, 1907, to John and
Mishia Goins Rayfield. She was a retired employee of Diamond Hosiery Mill.
She married Joe Stafford Workman on September 26, 1928. She was preceded
in death by her husband Joe; a son, Harry "Mack"; a grandson,
Alfred; and a brother, Carson Rayfield. Survivors include two daughters,
Margaret Harris and Jo Dewar; a sister, Hazel Hinson; nine grandchildren;
and six great-grandchildren.
