Deaths:
BAXTER Merrill W. Baxter, 79, May 16, 2002, Marion First Friends, Indiana.
Merrill "Bill" Baxter was born November 10, 1922 , to Byron
Woodford Baxter and Mabel Gillette Baxter. He served in the U.S. Army
from 1943 to 1946 as Master Sergeant. On April 1, 1949, he married Berneil
Heller. A resident of Richmond since 1971, he was a former employee of
National Cash Register Company and Comer and Sons Oil Company. A member
of the Board of Trustees of Friends Fellowship Community since its founding
in 1954, he served as its vice-president for five years before serving
as its president from 1966 through 1970. He was president of Friends Fellowship
Community from 1971 to 1989. He was also past president of the Indiana
Association of Homes for Aging and was the Indiana delegate to the national
association. He was a board member of Harrington Bank from 1978 until
January 2002 and a member of the Richmond Area Chamber of Commerce as
well as several other historical and fraternal organizations. He was preceded
in death by three brothers, Harold, Howard and Karl; and a sister, Elizabeth
Baxter. Survivors include his wife, Berneil; two daughters, Connie Jo
Baxter and Martha Jane Akers; two sons, Jeffrey L. and Kent A. Baxter;
three sisters, Frances Koeling, Virginia Heller and Mary Worrell; one
brother, Charles Baxter; and ten grandchildren.
FERREE Arthur H. Ferree, 80, Bethel Friends, Indiana, April 5, 2002.
Arthur was the son of Webster and Grace Dickey Ferree. He was a farmer,
a life-long member at Bethel and had served as a trustee. He was preceded
in death by his wife, Alice Childers and one brother, Alvin. Survivors
include four daughters, Ruth Detlefsen, Rita Petroni, Sandra Kahn and
Julia Bright; two sons, Tim and Doug; one sister, Dorothy Dilley and seven
grandchildren.
FICHTER Margallen Fichter, 67, May 17, 2002, Albany Friends, New York.
Margallen Fichter was born on December 9, 1934, in Rockbridge County,
Virginia, to C. Morton and Margaret Hanna. She graduated from Maryville
College in Tennessee in 1956 and pursued graduate studies at the University
of Chicago for the following two years. She married Donn Fichter in 1958
under the care of 57th Street Meeting, Chicago. They lived in Evanston,
Illinois, and in Kentucky and Rhode Island before moving to Albany. She
was an active member of her meeting, serving as clerk, treasurer and trustee
plus on various committees. She was also active in New York Yearly Meeting.
She served as president of her local PTA for several years and as district
director. In 1985 she founded the Parent Education Network and served
as both president and board member. She had volunteered since 1992 with
the Prevent Child Abuse New York hot line. Survivors include her husband
Donn; one son, William; one daughter, Elizabeth; two brothers, Charles
and Edwin; one sister, Betty H. Sikes; four grandchildren, Shelby and
William Fichter, Joel and Gavin Hanna Olzak; one niece; and six nephews.
HOLDING Frances Holding, 87, April 28, 2002, Hominy Friends, Oklahoma.
An elder of the Osage tribe, Frances was the daughter of the Osage chief
John Oberly. She was one of the few remaining speakers of the Osage language.
She served as Presiding Clerk of her meeting for many years and was very
active in FCNL and FWCC. She attended the FWCC triennial held in Sidney,
Australia. She had an especially deep concern for the children of the
meeting and of her tribe, and for the future of the Osage language. She
was preceded in death by two husbands, Joe Abbott and Homer Holding, Jr.
Survivors include one son, Joseph B. Abbott, Jr.; two stepsons, Homer
and David Holding; many nieces and nephews.
KEYS Kenneth Ira Keys, 81, Jericho Friends, Indiana, May 14, 2002. Born
June 10, 1920, to Ira J. and Hazel Ross Keys, Kenneth Keys was a farmer
and school bus driver. A lifelong member of Jericho Friends, he sang in
the choir. He was preceeded in death by his sister, Helen. Survivors include
his wife, Marcella; one son, Robert; one daughter, Nancy Brumfield; a
twin brother, Carlton; one sister, Edith Odle; four grandchildren; one
step-grandaughter; four great-grandchildren; and one step great-grandson.
Memorials may be made to Jericho Friends Church or the Randolph County
Antique Tractor Association.
