Deaths:
BERENDT Russell Noel Franklin Berendt, 64, June 28, 2002, First Friends
Meeting, Greensboro, North Carolina. Noel Berendt was born January 21,
1938. Four of his school years were at Boys' Town, Nebraska, where he
was a competitive swimmer and soloist with the famous Boys' Town choir.
He came to North Carolina in 1957 as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne
at Fort Bragg and served in Korea. He began working for Pilot Insurance
Company in Greensboro in 1959 and was active in commercial real estate
for many years. In 1990, he began to take part in the life of First Friends
Meeting in Greensboro. He was active with the Friends Disaster Service,
the Singles Group at New Garden Meeting, the Associated Friends Committee
for Indian Affairs, Habitat for Humanity and Yokefellow Prison Ministries
of North Carolina, where he served on the Board of Director. He was preceded
in death by one son, Swayne Franklin. He is survived by three sons, Russell
Franklin, Jr., Henry Max Franklin and James Kermit Franklin; five grandchildren
and two great-grandchildren.
DUBOIS Hubert A. Dubois, 86, Amboy Friends, Indiana, April 27, 2002.
Hubert A. Dubois was born June 15, 1915. An educator all his life, he
retired as Superintendent of the Oak Hill Schools, in Converse, Indiana.
He graduated from Manchester College and Indiana University. He served
with the U.S. Navy during WWII. During his lifetime he served his meeting
in many different capacities. Survivors include four children, several
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
HEATH Brayton (Buddy) Morgan Heath, age 83, Rich Square Monthly Meeting,
Woodland, North Carolina, May 12, 2002. A well-loved recorded elder, Buddy
Heath was actively involved with his meeting and community. He and his
wife, Kathryn (Katy) Evans Heath, met challenges throughout their long
marriage with a sense of faithful openness and expectancy about life which
inspired all who knew them. Buddy, a graduate of Guilford College, served
as a conscientious objector in World War II, working from the camps along
the Blue Ridge Parkway to eastern State Hospital in Williamsburg, Virginia.
After the war, the couple settled in Murfreesboro, North Carolina, to
rear their three children, Evans, Charles and Betsy. Buddy worked as a
mill manager with Georgia Pacific. He was preceded in death by one sister,
Dorothy Heath Brown. Survivors include his wife, Kathryn; two sons, Charles
B. and Evans; one daughter, Betsy J.; and three grandchildren.
LAKE Hazel Lake, 105, Bluff Point Friends, Portland, Indiana, September
27, 2001. Hazel Lake was born August 21, 1896. Hazel was a homemaker.
She was married to Russell Lake, who preceded her in death. Survivors
include two sons, John and Robert; one daughter, Bonnie Abbott, 11 grandchildren,
17 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren.
MILLER Dorothy G. (Davis) Miller, 87, South Marion Friends, Indiana,
April 30, 2002. She was a member of her meeting for 65 years. She married
Carl Miller on December 9,1933. He died in 1989 after 55 years of marriage.
She served as Sunday School teacher, the president of the Missionary Society
and served on many other committees. Survivors include two sons, Richard
and Carl Edward, and one daughter, Clara.
PEEBLES Maxine R. Peebles, 83, Wabash Friends, Indiana, July 18, 2002.
Maxine Peebles was born August 16, 1918, to Ralph and Gertrude (Custer)
Ridgeway. She married John B. Peebles on February 24, 1940. A lifelong
homemaker and farmer, she was active in her church as well as the Asbury
United Methodist Women and the Linlawn Missionary Society. She served
as President of the Wabash County AARP and was a member of the Wabash
County Home Economics Chorus. She was preceded in death by her husband
John. Survivors include three sons, Ronnie, Steve and Dave; one brother,
Marvin Ridgeway; six grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
PEFLEY Leota M. (Lewis) Pefley, 85, South Marion Friends, Indiana, July
31, 2001. She was a member of her meeting for 55 years. She married Sherman
Pefley on August 18, 1935. Survivors include her husband, Sherman; one
daughter, Gariselda Peterson, and one son, Stanley.
