Deaths:
ENGLE Harriett V. Engle, 85, October 8, 2002, Winchester Friends, Indiana.
Harriett Engle was born June 20, 1917 to Harry and Emma Beavers. She married
Glen Oliver Engle on November 10, 1940. She attended beauty school and
held various jobs, but her family was her primary concern. She was well
known for feeding neighborhood kids her famous doughnuts. Harriet was
actively involved in Winchester Friends Church and part of the Quaker
Girls class. She also participated in a home extension group She was preceded
in death by her husband Glen, one brother, one sister, and one grandson.
Survivors include three sons, John, Mike and Dennis; one daughter, Glenda
Reece; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
FISHER Nova Fisher, 94, October 30, 2002, Winchester Friends, Indiana.
Nova was born August 2, 1908 to John L. and Bertha Hesser Culy. She and
her husband, Ralph W. Fisher, owned and operated Fishers Hardware in Winchester.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph W. Fisher. Survivors include
two sons, Wayne Lee and Jon C.
GUTHRIE Linda Guthrie, 64, December 3, 2002, Winchester Friends, Indiana.
Linda worked at Ohio Valley Gas for many years and was a lifelong resident
of Randolph County, Indiana. She was preceded in death by one brother.
Survivors include one son, Bill Guthrie; one daughter, Brenda Franklin;
one sister, Judith Schmidt; and one granddaughter.
HINSHAW Ross Isham Hinshaw, 77, November 25, 2002, Rocky River Friends
Meeting, North Carolina. Ross Hinshaw was the son of Clyde I. and Laura
(Carter) Hinshaw. He was a member of Rocky River Friends Meeting and was
a member of the Believers Sunday school class. He was a retired cabinet
maker for Hinshaw Cabinet Shop. He was preceded in death by his wife,
Mildred White Hinshaw. Survivors include one son, Henry Lee; and three
brothers, Floyd C., Jack and Virgil.
HOLLOWAY Sarah A. Holloway, 97, October 21, 2002, Winchester Friends,
Indiana. Sarah Holloway was born December 23, 1904 to Amos and Pearl (Ramsey)
Buckmaster. She was a homemaker and resided in Winchester most of her
life.Ê She was a member of Winchester Friends where she was involved in
many church activities including the Quaker Girls Class. She was preceded
in death by her husband, Warren Holloway; one son, one daughter, two brothers,
one sister and one great-granddaughter. Survivors include four daughters,
Marilyn Gulley, Alice Milligan, Eva Copenhaver and Virginia Evans; one
brother, Wright Buckmaster; one daughter-in-law, Jeannie Holloway; 11
grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
LILLY Geraldine Lilly, 94, December 11, 2002, Danville Friends Meeting,
Indiana. Geraldine Lilly was born on March 8, 1911 to William and Gladys
Roberts. She married Pleas B. Lilly on August 6, 1932. Geraldine was a
math and English teacher. Geraldine joined the Danville Friends Meeting
on April 22, 1973. She served as the treasurer for several years and was
very active in the Friendly Service Circle. She continued to attend meetings
for worship right until her death despite her advanced age and deteriorating
health. She was a member of the Danville Chapter of the Order of Eastern
Star and the Alpha Theta Sorority. She also served the community as a
volunteer in the Hendricks Community Hospital Guild. Geraldine had three
sons, Kenneth, Keith, and Max; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
NORWOOD Charles Alfred Norwood, 86, November 2, 2002, Forsyth Friends
Meeting, Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Charles Norwood was the son of
Charlie Norris and Ira Freeman Norwood. Originally moving to Winston-Salem
in 1953, he retired from Western Electric in 1977 as Senior Engineer on
the U.S. Navy's Oceanographic Research Project. Following retirement,
he moved to Sarasota, Fla., where he worked as an Engineering Consultant.
A birthright Quaker and charter member of Forsyth Friends Meeting, he
served as Clerk of the Monthly Meeting, and was a former Clerk of Ministry
and Counsel, Men's Bible Class teacher and a member of the Forsyth Quaker
Men. On the Board of Directors of North Carolina Quaker Men, he served
as President of Quaker Men International from 1995-1998 and was the Executive
Secretary for the 2004 QMI Conference to be held in Greensboro. In addition,
he was a member of the Rotary Club, a Senior Life Member of the Institute
of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, where he was CarolinaÕs Section
Engineer of the Year in 1975. He was also a member of the Telephone Pioneers
of America, and the Oceanographic Engineers Society. In addition, he held
Radio Operators License W4HEQ for 62 years and for work in the early years
of the radiotelephone and telegraph industry was a member of the Wireless
Pioneers of America, The Quarter Century Wireless Association and the
Old, Old Timers Club. A member of the North Carolina Friends Historical
Society and an amateur genealogist, he authored ten books and assisted
in several others. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Ellen
Parish Norwood; his second wife, Lillian W. Myers; and two brothers, M.
Glenn Norwood and Edward A. Norwood. Survivors include two sons Ronald
and Donald; one step-daughter, Vickey Myers Duncan; one brother, Ralph
W. Norwood; four grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchild.
SMALL Kenneth Donald Small, 85, November 2, 2002, Back Creek Friends,
Indiana. Kenneth was born September 28, 1917, on the family farm in Grant
County, Indiana, into the Small family whose Quaker roots extend many
generations into the past. Married to the former Betty Lou Vetor, he was
the father of eight children. As a long-time member of Back Creek Friends
Meeting, he faithfully served as its treasurer for twenty years. Drawing
on his background as a master machinist and craftsman, he spent many hours,
weeks and months helping guide to completion a recent, large addition
to the Back Creek meetinghouse. Survivors include his wife, Betty Lou
Vetor; five daughters, Carolyn Wimmer, Linda Tolle, Patsy Vetor, Donna
Liddick and Nancy Small; and three sons, Kenneth Dewain, Billie and Donald
Jay.
STANDING Mildred M. Standing, 102, November 21, 2002, Bear Creek Friends,
Iowa. Mildred Standing was born on December 16, 1899, the daughter of
John and Mira (Hadley) Mendenhall. Her childhood was spent in this community
and at Oskaloosa, Iowa, where she graduated from Penn Academy in 1918
and from Penn College (now William Penn University) in 1922. After teaching
for two years at Vermilion Friends Academy at Vermilion Grove, Illinois,
she married Bernard A. Standing on August 23, 1924. They farmed at various
locations in Iowa. Mildred was an active member of the Bear Creek Friends
Church and also participated in the activities of the Bear Creek Friends
Meeting (Conservative) near her home. She was preceded in death by her
husband, Bernard, and by two sons, Leland and Alan. Survivors include
two sons, Herbert and John; one daughter, Elsie Kuhn; two grandchildren,
Rufus Kuhn and Jennifer Sotelo; and one great-grandson, Keegan Sotelo.
STORY Harriet H. Story, 86, November 4, 2002, Wabash Friends Church,
Indiana. Harriet Story was born June 3, 1916, to Frederick and Leana (Teuteburg)
Symons. She married Donald M. Story on April 21, 1946, in Chicago. She
was a homemaker and a member of Wabash Friends Church. She was a past
member of the Wabash Order of Eastern Star. She was preceded in death
by her husband, Donald Story; two brothers, two sisters and one grandchild.
Survivors include two sons, Delbert Story and James W. Story, Sr.; two
daughters, Myrna Lee Mann and Judith White; six grandchildren; and seven
great-grandchildren.
