Deaths:
BRANCH Joseph Mayton Branch, 76, December 27, 2002, Corinth Friends Meeting,
Ivor, Virginia. Joseph Branch was one of six children of Fenton and Hattie
Raiford Branch. He was a retired welder, a Navy veteran of World War II
and a member of Corinth Friends Meeting. Survivors include his wife of
39 years, Sarah M. Branch; one son, Mayton Branch; one sister, Katherine
Beale; and two granddaughters.
BRAXTON William Albert Braxton Jr., 65, February 5, 2003, Chatham Friends
Meeting, Snow Camp, North Carolina. William Braxton was the son of William
Albert Braxton, Sr. and Mary Irene Braxton, both deceased. He was retired
from Duke Power Co., a former U.S. Army Reserve member and a member of
Chatham Friends Meeting. He was preceeded in death by both parents. Survivors
include his wife, Evelyn McBane Braxton; one daughter, Sharon Owens; one
son, Kent; one sister, Shelia B. Majors; and two grandchildren, Alexis
Owens and Chase Owens.
FRYE Anne Young Gray Frye, 68, January 13, 2003, New Garden Friends Meeting,
Greensboro, North Carolina. Anne Frye was born to Robert Paul Gray and
Fiona Moss Young Gray. She retired after 25 years in the public school
system. She was a graduate of Malone College in Canton, Ohio. She was
a member of New Garden Friends Meeting and served as a volunteer with
the American Friends Service Committee as a member of the Executive Committee
for the Southeastern Regional Office. She was also a member of the United
Society of Friends Women and was a lifeline volunteer at Alamance Regional
Medical Center. Her hobbies were grandmothering, gardening, gourmet cooking
and ballroom dancing. She was preceded in death by her parents and one
brother, Donald Harper Gray. Survivors include her husband of 47 years,
Dr. Buford Vernon Frye; one daughter, Susan Kay Harris; two sons, Dr.
Stephen Vernon Frye and Dr. Jonathan Gray Frye; five grandchildren, Aaron
Gray Frye, Jeremy Sutton Frye, Rachel Young Frye, Olivia Leanne Harris
and Jesse Vernon Harris; and five brothers, Ernest Freeman, Alfred Joseph.,
Robert Paul, Cabell Kenneth and Larry Roger.
GRIFFIN Gaynell Griffin, 87, October 10, 2002, First Friends Meeting,
New Castle, Indiana. Gaynell Griffin was born August 31, 1915, to Russell
and Marie Smith Thomas. She was a 1933 graduate of New Castle High School
and had been employed at Sears for 15 years. She was member of New CastleÊFirst
Friends Meeting. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth in
1999. Survivors include one daughter, Jacqueline Kinsinger; one son, James
Griffin; eight grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and one sister.
JOHNSTON Harold Johnston, 90, January 25, 2003, Winchester Friends, Indiana.
Harold Johnston was born August 12, 1912, to Harry and Mary Locke Johnston.
He graduated from McKinley High School where he enjoyed playing basketball.
He was a traffic manager at Anchor Hocking Glass in Winchester before
retiring in 1977. Harold was an active member for many years of Winchester
Friends Church. He also was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite,
the Randolph County and Ft. Wayne Shrine Clubs, and the Elks Club. He
was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one grandson.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Mildred; one son, Richard Johnston;
one sister, Joan Humble; one grand-daughter, three great-grandchildren,
and several nieces and nephews.
JOYNER Elijah "Buster" Joyner, 92, December 28, 2002, Bethel
Friends Meeting, Franklin, Virginia.. Elijah Joyner was born to James
and Mary Alice Cobb Joyner. He was a lifelong Quaker and member of Bethel
Friends Meeting. Buster was a farmer, avid fisherman, gardener, generous
friend and neighbor. He was preceeded in death by three brothers, Joseph,
Charles and William Joyner and one nephew, J.C. Joyner. Survivors include
his wife of 62 years, Thelma Branch Joyner; one daughter, Nancy J. Snidow;
and one son, Donald Elijah Joyner.
NICHOLS Bertha Marshall Nichols, 90, February 4, 2003, White Plains Friends
Meeting, North Carolina. Bertha Nichols was born February 2, 1913, to
Samuel Dayton and Hattie Jenkins Marshall. She was a lifelong member of
White Plains Friends Meeting, being a great-granddaughter of Vestal Hutchens,
founder of the meeting, where she participated in the Friends Women's
Society and was recognized with a lifetime membership in the United Society
of Friends Women. She was a Sunday School teacher, a participant in community
activities and a member of the Surry Quilters Guild. Through the years
she honored each child, grandchild and great-grandchild with their own
quilt. She was preceeded in death by her husband, Merlin M. Nichols. Survivors
include four daughters, Ruth Richards, Merle Tedder, Nancy Nichols Dawson
and Penny Chilton; one son, Warren C.; 13 grandchildren Anne Richards
Hennis, Charlie Merlin Nichols, Stuart Marshall, Jennifer Nichols, Richard
Grant, Robin Puckett, Christy Lynn Dawson, Janet Leigh Nichols, Olivia
Dawson Vaught, Gari Leigh Chilton, Jodi Chilton Cottone, April Tedder
Lancaster and Anna Tedder Stover; and nine great-grandchildren, Samuel
Austin Nichols, Emily Pearson, Weldon Rose Nichols, Jessica Bean Nichols,
Brady Lynn Vaught, Alexander Grant Puckett, Aliza Nichole Puckett, Madison
Sinclair Lancaster and Lawrence Mitchell Lancaster.
STEPHENSON Mary Turner Stephenson, 81, January 3, 2003, Corinth Friends
Meeting, Ivor, Virginia. Mary Turner Stephenson was born to James Cassie
and Evie Lowe Turner. She was retired from the Bank of Sussex and Surry
in Ivor and was a member of the Corinth Friends Meeting, and its Ladies
Aid Society. Mary loved working in her yard and was an accomplished seamstress.
Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Elton L. Stephenson; one daughter,
Kay Stephenson; one son-in-law, Tony Ambrose; and one sister, Virginia
T. Duck.
WRENN Lucy Foust Wrenn, 84, February 1, 2003, Rocky River Friends, Siler
City, North Carolina. A native of Guilford County, NC and a member of
Rocky River Friends Meeting, Lucy Wrenn worked for A.J. Schneierson &
Sons as a seamstress until she retired. She was preceeded in death by
her husband, H. Delbert Wrenn, Sr. Survivors include one daughter, Etta
Florence Winslow; one son, H. Delbert Wrenn, Jr.; two sisters, Annie Margaret
Shoffner and Ernestine Forney; one brother, Clifford Foust; two grandchildren,
Dacia W. Quate and Kevin Wrenn; two great-grandsons; three step-grandchildren;
eight step-great-grandchildren.
