Deaths:
CHILDRESS Zella Wagoner Childress, 95, February 27, 2003, White Plains
Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Zella Childress was born August 19, 1907,
in Alleghany County, a daughter of James M. Wagoner and Charity Alice
Edwards Wagoner. She was a retired school teacher and a member of White
Plains Friends Meeting. She was preceeded in death by her husband, Roscoe
Childress. Survivors include one daughter, Sue Compton; one son, James
F.; four grandchildren, Frank Childress, Fred Childress, Gordon Compton
and Geoff Compton; four great-grandchildren, Ian Childress, Anna Childress,
Erin Compton and Caitlin Compton; and a special niece, Margaret Honbarrier.
FERREE James Simpson Ferree, Jr., 81, February 22, 2003, First Friends
Meeting, Greensboro, North Carolina. James Ferree was born on October
27, 1921, the son of James Simpson Ferree and Ulah Bonkemeyer Ferree.
In 1949, he started Ferree Trailers, a manufacturer of heavy-duty truck
trailers. Mr. Ferree served as chairman of the Truck Trailer Manufacturers
Association Engineering Committee from 1968 to 1970 and as chairman of
the Board of TTMA from 1976 to 1977. He was a member of First Friends
Meeting. Survivors include his wife, Mabel Barker Ferree; one son, Donald
Neal Ferree; one daughter, Marsha Ellen Ferree; and one sister, Dorothy
Ferree Davis.
McGINNIS Charlotte L. McGinnis, 78, March 3, 2003, First Friends Meeting,
New Castle, Indiana. Charlotte McGinnis was born October 16, 1924 in Muncie,
Indiana, a daughter of Roy and Lottie (Miller) Hall. She was a member
of First Friends Meeting where she sang in the choir.Ê She was a member
of the kitchen band at Raintree Square and past president of AARP. Survivors
include her husband of 54 years, Hugh J. McGinnis; one son: Roy McGinnis;
three daughters,Ê Darlene Darling, Catherine Roth and Carmelle Jordan;
thirteen grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
PAVLOVA Tatiana Pavlova December 17, 2002, Moscow Monthly Meeting, Russia.
In the 1980s she joined Quakers on the International Membership List,
and at the beginning of the 1990s was one of the founders of Moscow Monthly
Meeting held in her flat in 1990-91. Later in 1993-94 Tatiana led with
great enthusiasm a Sunday Bible study, where together we learnt to understand
and feel the spirit of the Bible. All her conscious life Tatiana herself
remained a sincere seeker and contemplator of the Inner Light. Like early
Quakers she sensed a mystical link with Jesus Christ. She said: "I
feel that Jesus is my friend. He teaches me humility." Tatiana, a
member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, was a prominent historian who
specialized in the religious history of 17th century England and wrote
fiction books about English history. Her other books include a Russian
translation of Christopher HillÕs The English Bible and the Seventeenth-Century
Revolution and the collections of essays Nonviolence as Worldview and
Way of Life, and The Long Road of Russian Pacifism. Her last two books
were the first biography about John Milton written by a Russian author
and a translation into Russian of the work of Hugh McGregor Ross "George
Fox Speaks for Himself." In her last year of life, she offered a
ministry of counseling and prayer with others who were facing death or
were grieving the deaths of loved ones.
POPENHUSEN Leola "Poppy" Popenhusen, 95, December 20, 2002,
Farmington Friends Meeting, New York. Leola Popenhusen was born June 13,
1907 in Macedon, NY, the daughter of Walter and Grace Hance Eldredge.
In 1933, she married Karl Popenhusen. She taught school in Rochester and
Victor Central School. She was a seventy-year resident of Farmington and
a member of Farmington Friends Meeting where she enjoyed hand bells and
teaching Sunday School. She was also active in the Home Bureau, a Matron
of Juvenile Grange, a charter member of the Farmington Fire Association
LadiesÕ Auxiliary, a life member of Macedon's Eureka Chapter No. 209,
O.E.S., and secretary of Farmington Senior Citizens. She was preceeded
in death by her husband, Karl. Survivors include one son, Glenn; one daughter,
Jean Parker; seven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; one brother,
Alvon Eldredge; and one sister, Jessie Smith.
SEIFERT Allen R. Seifert, 94, February 12, 2003, Deep River Friends Meeting,
North Carolina. Allen Seifert was born August 22, 1908, in Camden, New
Jersey, to Max B. and Louisa Miller Seifert. On May 31, 1938, he married
Orpha Newlin Seifert. He was the founder and former owner/operator of
Utility Craft, Inc., a member of Deep River Friends Meeting and a graduate
of Guilford College. He was preceded in death by his wife, Orpha. Survivors
include two sons, Max Seifert and William "Bill" Seifert; two
grandsons, Jeffrey Seifert and Christopher Seifert.
STEPHENS Raymond "Ben' Stephens, 84, February 20, 2003, Liberty
Friends Meeting, North Carolina. A native of Alamance County, he was a
member of Liberty Friends Meeting and a volunteer fireman with the Liberty
Volunteer Fire Department for many years. Survivors include his wife of
64 years, Pandora J. Stephens; one daughter, Brenda Hardison; one sister,
Mary Fogleman; two grandchildren, Jennifer Veasey and Jeremy Hardison;
and one great-grandchild, Jacob Veasey.
THORNBURGH Geneva Galbraith Thornburgh, 94, January 13, 2003, First Friends
Church, Anderson, Indiana. Geneva Thornburgh was born September 16, 1908
to Wilber and Dora Baker Galbraith. In 1936 she married Bryce Thornburgh.
She was an active, long-term member of her church and served on different
committees. She retired from Delco Remy Division of General Motors after
44 years. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 47
years, Bryce; two brothers and one sister. Survivors include one daughter,
Bea McCoy; one brother, James Galbraith; two grandchildren Jill Amrine
and Greg McCoy; and four great-grandchildren.
WEBBER Joyce Pate Herring Webber, February 7, 2003, New Hope Friends
Meeting, North Carolina. Joyce Webber was the daughter of Ezra and Mary
Gardner Pate and a graduate of Guilford College, Greensboro, where she
was listed in Who's Who Among College Students. After graduation, she
was a schoolteacher. A former member of Goldsboro Friends Meeting, she
was presently attending New Hope Friends Meeting. She was also an active
member of the Goldsboro WomanÕs Club and the New Hope Extension Homemakers.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, W. Paul Herring. Survivors
include her husband, J. Harold Webber; two daughters, Rebekah Herring
Haslett and Patricia Herring DeForest; five grandchildren, Danni Haslett,
John Haslett, Paul DeForest, Rebekah DeForest, Allison D. Wise and A.J.
DeForest; one great-grandchild; four step-children, Morgan Wise, Peggy
Webber Kearney, James Harold (Jimmy) Webber, Jr. and Robert L. (Bobby)
Webber; and seven step-grandchildren, Jay Webber, David Webber, Joseph
Webber, Dana Webber, Lee Webber, Jennifer Kearney and Natasha Grygoryeva.
