Deaths
BROWN Agnes A. Brown, 85, April 15, 2003, Pennville Friends, Indiana.
She was born on August 28, 1917, to Johnie A. Sutton and Orpha L. Ellison
Sutton. On November 26, 1936, she married Rev. Delbert S. Brown. Agnes
Brown was a homemaker, a member of the Penn township Home Economics Club
and the Jay County Home Extension Club. She was a member of the Pennville
Friends Church and a member of the Women's Society of Christian Service.
She was preceded in death by her husband Delbert; one son, Harry E. "Bud"
Brown; four brothers, Cecil Sutton, Homer Eugene Sutton, Junior Sutton
and Arthur "Spud" Sutton; one sister, Thelma Cash; and two grandchildren.
Survivors include one son, David Brown; two daughters, Betty Jane Howell
and Patty Glessner; two sisters, Naomi Betts and Mary Love; eight grandchildren;
and 16 great-grandchildren.
COOPER Burnice Cooper, 97, December 22, 2002, Knightstown Friends Meeting,
Indiana. Burnice Cooper was born October 11, 1905, the daughter of Grant
and Eva Ball. She was a member of Knightstown Friends Meeting and a former
sales clerk for AllenŐs Young Fashions. She also belonged to Shirley Chapter
492, Order of Eastern Star and Psi Iota Xi Sorority of Knightstown. She
was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Cooper. Survivors include
two grandsons, Bradley and Barren Cooper; a daughter-in-law, Mary Alice
Cooper; two sisters-in-law, Justine Cooper and Nellie Ball; and several
nieces and nephews.
DEBOLT Marietta K. Debolt, 92, January 17, 2003, Knightstown Friends
Meeting, Indiana. Marietta K. Debolt was born September 9, 1910, the daughter
of Russell and Edith Manford Dalrymple. She retired from the U.S. General
Accounting Office in 1975. She was a member of Knightstown Friends Meeting
and the Knightstown High School Alumni Association. She was preceded in
death by her parents; her husband, Virgil and one sister, Mildred Beachler.
Survivors include two cousins, Carol Ann Shirley and Marilyn Ruckle.
HINSHAW Clara Celeste Hinshaw, 91, July 4, 2002, Jericho Friends Meeting,
Indiana. Clara was born on October 12, 1911, the daughter of William U.
and Orilla M. Cook. She was a member of Jericho Friends Meeting and worked
as the supervisor of the Randolph County Hospital. She was preceded in
death by her husband, Everett F. Hinshaw; four brothers and one sister.
Survivors include three sons, Edwin; Merrill I. and Ronald L.; nine grandchildren
and 11 great-grandchildren.
HINSHAW Mary Belle Hinshaw, 85, July 8, 2003, Winchester Friends Church,
Indiana. Mary Belle was born July 1, 1918 to Ira and Echo (Slick) Hollingsworth.
On May 6, 1939 she married Richard L. Hinshaw in a Quaker wedding. Mary
Belle was born into a Quaker family, was active in the Friends Church
all her life and was a long-time member of Winchester Friends Church.
Throughout the years she worked with children and youth ministries, taught
Sunday School, and actively supported Quaker Haven Camp. She also provided
leadership and hands-on involvement in the meetings and projects of the
United Society of Friends Women at the local church, Quarterly Meeting,
and Yearly Meeting levels. She had special interest in both the foreign
missions and local outreach ministries. She was an avid reader and collector
of Quaker books and had an impressive shelf of works by Friends authors.
Mary Belle was a committed and involved homemaker and mother, and after
her children were raised, she graduated from Ball State University in
Muncie with a bachelor's degree in social work. She was employed as a
social worker with the Welfare Department in Randolph County and also
was the bookkeeper for her husband's company, Hinshaw's Building Service.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Ivan and Warren Hollingsworth.
Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Richard L. Hinshaw; one daughter
Carol Liston; one son Keith Hinshaw; three grandchildren, Jeff Hinshaw,
Grant Liston and Jenny Reitenour; and one great-grandson, Sam Reitenour.
IDLEWINE Gladys Leone Idlewine, 90, March 17, 2003, Knightstown Friends
Church, Indiana. Gladys was born April 5, 1912, the daughter of Clarence
Leonard and Myra Ethel Pidgeon Rowles. She graduated from Ball State Teachers
College in Muncie and taught third, fourth and fifth grades. In 1960,
she received her master's degree in Elementary Guidance Counseling from
Ball State University. After her retirement from Tri School Corporation
in 1978, she served two terms on South Henry School Corporation Board.
She was a member of Knightstown Friends Church, Sesame Club, Spiceland
Alumni Association, Indiana State Teachers Association, Psi Iota Xi and
Friends Women Reading Circle. She was preceded in death by her parents
and her husband, Paul E. Survivors include two daughters, Jean Anne Riddle
and Carol Sue Splete; two grandchildren, Cameron Craig and Harrison Craig.;
two great-grandchildren, Meri and Bryce; one sister, Louise Holaday; and
several nieces and nephews.
MILBURN Maryann Milburn, 62, May 23, 2003, First Friends Meeting, New
Castle, Indiana. Maryann Milburn was born November 16, 1940, a daughter
of Clarence and Mary Elizabeth Pittenger Patten. A homemaker, she had
been an active member of First Friends Meeting, and an accomplished artist.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Howard Byrd; and son,
Brian Lee Byrd. Survivors include one daughter, Tamara Majors; one son,
John Andrew; and six grandchildren.
MILLS Arzella Ruth (Thompson) Mills, 73, July 4, 2003, First Friends
Church, Indianapolis, Indiana. Arzella was born on April 3, 1930 in New
Castle, Indiana, to Horace and Ola (Ellis) Thompson. She attended Earlham
College and Indiana Central College. She was an active member of First
Friends Church for many years and served on the Hoosier Capital Girl Scout
Council for a number of years. She was preceded in death by one son, Paul
Gerald Mills, Jr.; her parents, Horace and Ola (Ellis) Thompson; one sister,
Yvonne Thompson; and one brother, Ernest Thompson. Survivors include her
husband of 54 years, Paul Gerald Mills; one son, Donald Mills; five daughters,
Beverly Mills-Novoa, Tamra Johnson, Diane Kelly, Susan MacHolda and Karen
McDonald; and sixteen grandchildren. Memorial contributions can be made
to First Friends Church in Indianapolis, IN or Earlham College, Richmond,
IN 47374.
PARSONS Melba Freeman Parsons, 87, June 8, 2003, New Salem Friends Meeting,
Indiana. Born June 4, 1916, Melba was the daughter of Rolla and Gail Freeman.
She was a lifetime member of New Salem Friends Meeting and worked on the
family farm. She enjoyed reading, gardening and serving her family and
God. She was active in church as long as her health permitted. Survivors
include five sons, Jerry, Jim, Dan, Rolla, and Rusty; eight grandsons,
Mike, Rick, Fred, Brad, Jeff, Rob, Alan and Jason; four granddaughters,
Heather, Holly, Jennay and Sarah; and six great-grandchildren. Memorial

WELLONS Harry Albert Wellons, 93, July 11, 2003, Bethel Friends Meeting,
Virginia. Raised on a peanut farm near Sedley, Virginia, Harry was a 1933
graduate of Guilford College. He married Esther Lindley and they served
as Quaker missionaries in Jamaica under the American Friends Board of
Missions (later merged into what is now Friends United Meeting) from 1938-1947.
Jamaica remained as a concern of the Wellons family. After one hurricane,
the extended family traveled there to help in the rebuilding process.
A member of Bethel Friends, Harry was a Recorded Friends Minister. As
needed in the 1960s, he provided pastoral care for Corinth, Black Creek,
and Bethel Meetings. After returning from Jamaica, Harry worked with the
Virginia Department of Rehabilitative Services for a number of years.
In 1966 he served at President of the Virginia Rehabilitation Association
a private, non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality
of life for all persons with disablities. In 1973 he received the R. N.
Anderson Award for demonstrated excellence in services to persons with
disabilities. Starting in July 1976, Harry also served several terms as
mayor of Victoria, Virgina. Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Esther
Lindley Wellons; 2 sons, Harry, Jr. "Bert" and Billy; 2 daughters,
Martha Dentiste and Nancy; sixteen grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to American Friends Service Committee
"Emergency and Materials Assistance Program" or to Quaker missions
of your choice.
