Deaths
BARNES Elizabeth E. (Hook) Barnes, 73, August 19, 2003, Anderson First
Friends Meeting, Indiana. Elizabeth was born July 18, 1930 to Lawrence
and Elizabeth (Wood) Hook. She was active in her meeting and was a member
the church choir, USFWI and was involved in the Oklahoma Indian work.
She was also a member of Eastern Star, Bethesda White Shrine of Jerusalem,
Jobs Daughters, Delco Remy Travel Club and Good Sams Club. She was preceded
in death by her husband, Donald Banes. Survivors include one son, Harry;
two daughters, Diana Woolman and Teresa Schaefer; two sisters; eight grandchildren
and three great-grandchildren.
BOLIN Stanley F. Bolin, 77, January 23, 2003, Langley Hill Friends Meeting,
Maryland. He was born on March 25, 1926. Recovery and spirituality were
his business. He earned a Doctorate in Industrial Psychology from Case
Western. Prior to his retirement, he served as a U.S. Army research psychologist
and was a veteran of World War II. Stan embraced Quakerism and Quakers
with a unique enthusiasm. Unable to drive long distances, Stan managed
to attend three sessions of Baltimore Yearly Meeting, two annual Friends
General Conference meetings and two annual meetings of the Friends and
Religion Conference by finding rides with others. He was preceded in death
by one son, Eric. Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Geyoung and
their children, Jane and Jay. He also had children Mark, Dan, Hilde, from
previous marriages.
BROOKSHIRE Clyde L. Brookshire, 82, August 27, 2003, Bethel Friends Meeting,
Indiana. Clyde was a son of Lucius and Minnie (Bright) Brookshire. On
October 24, 1942, he married Evelyn Jervis. He served in WWII in the Army
Air Corps. He owned Brookshire Fabric in Marion, Indiana and was a farmer.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Martha Jean Garner.
Survivors include his wife Evelyn; two sons, Wesley and Jesse; one daughter,
Mary Ann; two brothers Carl and Loren; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
FLINN Jessie Ellen Flinn, 86, August 21, 2003, Wabash Friends Meeting,
Indiana. Jessie was born November 20, 1916 to Alfred and Carrie (Floy
Carr) Durnbaugh. On August 13, 1939, she married James L. Flinn. She was
a member of Wabash Friends and USFWI. She was a homemaker and a clerical
worker at Wabash Jr. High School. She was also involved with the Women's
Club House, Fourth Knight Bridge Club and Meals on Wheels. She was preceded
in death by her husband, James; one sister and one brother. Survivors
include one son, James and one grandson, J. Erick Flinn.
GUTHRIE Clara Guthrie, 95, March 4, 2003, Chicago Friends Meeting, Illinois.
Clara was born June 2, 1907 in New York City, the daughter of Harold and
Bertha (Muller) Deadman. She married James Victor Guthrie on July 23,1938
in Chicago. Clara graduated from William Penn College in Oskaloosa, Iowa
in 1928. Clara then taught high school biology in Chicago from 1928-1946.
Clara had been extremely active in the Chicago Meeting of the Society
of Friends, the American Friends Service Committee, Western Yearly Meeting,
Friends United Meeting and many outreach programs. Clara was anti-war
and a strong advocate for world peace. She was preceded in death by her
husband, James; one sister, Edith Jones and one brother, Harold Deadman.
Survivors include one son, James Thomas Guthrie; one grandson, John Thomas
Guthrie; one sister, Eleanor Wiles and one brother, Ralph Deadman.
MARLEY Margaret Caviness Marley, 75, August 22, 2003, Centre Friends
Meeting, North Carolina. Margaret Marley was a lifelong resident of Pleasant
Garden, North Carolina. She was an active member of Centre Friends Meeting
and a member of the Women's Circle Number 1. She was a former school bus
driver with Guilford County Schools. Survivors include her husband, Branson
Marley; five daughters, Katrine East, Edith Routh, Sharon Marley, Belinda
Marley and Melody Marley; two sons, James and Timothy Marley; her mother,
Edith Caviness; one sister, Maxine Larkin; 10 grandchildren, Travis East,
Derek East, Glenna Kidd, Paul Routh, Stephen Marley, James Marley, Jason
Marley, Zachary Marley, Caleb Marley and Noah Marley; and two great-grandchildren,
Madison Marley and Jacob Kidd.
MILES Patricia Beatty Miles, 75, July 14, 2003, Hanover Friends Meeting,
New Hampshire. Patricia was born on December 16, 1927, in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania, to Edward F. Beatty and Helen Longstreth Beatty. Pat graduated
from Smith College (class of '49) in art education, where she received
the All-Around Athlete of the Year award. Pat was teaching at a large
public school in Wilmington, Delaware when she met Frank Miles, a Haverford
student recently returned from American Friends Service Committee relief
work in China. They married in 1951. Raised in the Episcopal faith of
her mother and active in the Student Christian Movement, Pat deeply appreciated
Frank's Quaker approach to life. She was a member of the Radnor Monthly
Meeting, Argenta (British Columbia) Friends Meeting, and Hanover (New
Hampshire) Friends Meeting. When her last child entered school, Pat returned
to teaching. Wherever they lived, Pat and Frank reached out to individuals
and organizations from other parts of the world. They also sang with music
groups throughout their time together. Pat's watercolors display her deep
appreciation of nature with its marvelous colors, textures, and patterns.
Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Frank Vernon Miles; two sons,
Stephen and Dan Miles; two daughters Rebecca Miles and Cathy Miles Grant;
and seven grandchildren.
MINAS Elizabeth Carey Minas, 94, August 16, 2003, Newberg Friends Church,
Oregon. Elizabeth Minas was born June 9, 1909, in Traverse City, Michigan,
to Gervas and Amy Carey. Her father was a Friends pastor and served churches
in Indiana, Kansas, New York, Washington and Oregon. While he was pastor
of the Newberg Friends Church, Elizabeth attended George Fox. When he
took a pastorate in Seattle, she finished a Bachelor of Science degree
in library science at the University of Washington, received in 1931.
She then took library positions in Bend, Salem and Klamath Falls. Her
father, Gervas, was the sixth president of the college, from 1947 to 1950,
and she represented the family in the dedication of Carey Hall on campus
in his memory in 1980. In 1968, she met and married her husband, Dr. Vaughn
Minas. Following his death in 1974, his estate began an endowment at the
university that carries her name. The Elizabeth Carey Minas Scholarship
fund now assists about 125 students each year with annual $5,000 awards.
She has long been associated with George Fox University as an alumnus,
volunteer and through her family name and significant scholarship fund.
SCHULKE Sherrie Schulke, 42, August 21, 2003, West Chehalem Friends Church,
Newberg, Oregon, after battling cancer for much of her life. Sherrie earned
a bachelor's degree from George Fox, a master of divinity from Eastern
Baptist Theological Seminary, and two masterŐs degrees from Bryn Mawr
College. She was completing her doctorate at Portland State University
on the social and psychological adaptation of childhood cancer survivors.
Her research was funded by a $40,000 grant from the American Cancer Society.
She was a recorded minister of Northwest Yearly Meeting and attended West
Chehalem Friends Church. She had been an associate pastor at West Hills
Friends Church in Portland, Oregon, and a medical social worker at Newberg
Community Hospital. She had been assistant professor of social work at
George Fox University since 1995. Survivors include her mother, Joy Smith;
her father, Dale Schulke; one sister, Cindi Schulke; one brother, Steven
Schulke; three nieces, Rachel, Tabitha, and Cassidy Schulke; and one nephew,
Zachary Schulke.
SCOTT Charles Scott, 82, July 21, 2003, Westfield Friends Meeting, Indiana.
Charles was born on February 16, 1911. He served in missionary work on
a demonstration farm in the East Tennessee Mountains where he taught agriculture
classes to WWII veterans and as a farm manager at a mission farm in Bolivia,
South America. He served Iowa Yearly Meeting as treasurer. Along with
his wife, Charlotte, he assisted with pastoral care at Westfield and Gray
Friends Meetings in Indiana.
SHOWALTER Harold Eugene Showalter, 84, August 29, 2003, Wabash Friends
Meeting, Indiana. Harold was born March 26, 1919 to Audro and Alta Showalter.
On September 25, 1945, he married Charlene Grual. He earned an accounting
degree from Manchester College and in WWII served in the Army Air Corps.
He was a member of Wabash Friends Meeting and the American Legion. He
retired from General Tire and Rubber Co. He was preceded in death by his
wife, Charlene; one daughter and one sister. Survivors include three sons,
Mark, Eric and Charles; and four grandchildren.
TEBBS Ruby "Jewel" Tebbs, 71, August 23, 2003, Hunter Hills
Friends Meeting, North Carolina, after a courageous battle with cancer.
A native of Guilford County, Jewel was born August 11, 1932, to Bill and
Era Vickers Brown. She was very active in her meeting as choir director,
Sunday school teacher and youth leader. In 1992, she retired from the
University of North Carolina at Greensboro as a Financial Aid Officer.
She was preceded in death by both parents and one sister, Carolyn Joyce
Penley. Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Rev. Jack Tebbs; three
sons, Rev. David Tebbs, Mark Tebbs and Timothy Tebbs; one sister, Betty
Robinson; five grandchildren; eight nieces and nephews; and 10 great-nieces
and nephews.
