Friends United Meeting News
World Missions Updates
Colin and Kathy South There was a serious incursion into
Ramallah on Tuesday night, October 21, by the Israeli Defense Force. A
curfew was imposed for a few hours while an armed assault on the mosque
near the Friends School was carried out with a number of arrests following.
By Wednesday, however, everything was back to normal and school continued.
The children still display the energy and enthusiasm that you might expect
and keep us all on our toes.
Jacob Kuntz is doing well and finding his feet in this difficult
environment. These are troubled times and we need your prayers for the
High School staff in particular for better communication, more pastoral
support and more opportunities for saying thank you to each other for
maintaining the standards that we still enjoy. We also need your prayers
to help the school live its commitment to our school values of truth,
simplicity, peace, equality, tolerance, service, creativity, discipline
and justice.
John and Marjorie Scott returned to Ramallah in early November
to fulfill another three months as Friends-in-Residence at the schools.
They will be going home in early February.
Lisa & Andy Stout Our neighbors are wonderful and we are
blessed to be among them. They look out for us and have helped in our
transition. We are adjusting to a school system that is very different
from what we experienced in high school, and we enjoy working with the
staff of Happy Grove. Thank you for all your prayers and support.
Michael & Kay Cain Things in Belize are moving forward
despite an occasional setback. Sometime between October 4 and 6, a computer
went missing from one of the classrooms we occupy at the YMCA. On a more
positive note, our enrollment is holding strong, and we enrolled another
new student just this week. This young man comes from Guatemala and wants
to learn English and go on to high school. Please pray for this student
and our Language Arts teacher who doesn't speak Spanish.

FUM General Board Meets
The Friends United Meeting General Board met at Quaker Lake Camp in North
Carolina October 3-5, 2003. The setting was beautiful, the hospitality
was outstanding and the 2004 FUM budget was approved. Other committee
work was accomplished, including work for the next FUM Triennial. The
General Board next meets at FUM central offices in Richmond, Indiana,
February 14-16, 2004. The weather will be colder but a warm welcome will
be extended to all members.
2005 FUM Triennial To Be Held in Iowa
The 2005 FUM Triennial will be held in Des Moines, Iowa from July 13-17,
2005 at the Airport Holiday Inn. The theme, "The Lamb will overcome
them," was selected from Revelation 17:14: "These shall make
war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of
lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen,
and faithful."
Main speakers have been confirmed. The opening worship speaker will be
Retha McCutchen, General Secretary of Friends United Meeting. The Johnson
Lecture will be by Oliver Kisaka of Nairobi Yearly Meeting, Kenya. The
keynote address will be by Canby Jones, a member of Wilmington Yearly
Meeting. The closing worship will be led by Jan Hoffman of New England
Yearly Meeting. A youth and children's program is being planned as well
as USFWI and Quaker Men banquets, Bible studies, workshops and local trips.

up to the next FUM Triennial!
