Correction
I was scanning through the web and saw my father's obituary listed in
the November 2001 issue of Quaker Life.Ê As I read through it,
I found some wrong information.Ê My mother's name was Janell Moody Newlin,
not Janell Moody Woody.Ê I only mention this for genealogical purposes.Ê

NEWLIN Alfred Cyrus Newlin, 75, West Grove Friends, Snow Camp,
North Carolina, May 4, 2001. Alfred Newlin was born on September 27, 1925
to Harvey and Nancy (Guthrie) Newlin. Survivors include his wife, Janell
Moody Newlin; three sons, Barry, Gerald, and William Newlin; a daughter,
Cynthia Newlin; a sister, Martha N. Hartley, and six grandchildren.
Deaths
BROWN Josephine Etta Norman Brown, 93, September 29, 2003, Forsyth
Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Josephine was born July 22, 1910, to
Hyatt Dula and Millie Wooten Norman. She was a charter member of Forsyth
Friends Meeting. She was employed with Southland Life Insurance Company
for 25 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Luther B. Brown;
two brothers, Hyatt Norman Jr. and Kenyon V. Norman; and two sisters,
Connie Hicks and Verdie Cranfill. Survivors include one brother, Astor
Norman; and several nieces and nephews.
HINSHAW Richard L. Hinshaw, 85, October 17, 2003, Winchester Friends
Church, Indiana. Richard was born to Samuel M. and Edna Agnes (Reece)
Hinshaw on June 10, 1918. On May 6, 1939, Richard married Mary Belle Hollingsworth
in a Quaker wedding at the residence of Adam Flatter, the Friends minister
in Lynn. Richard was a longtime member and trustee of Winchester Friends
Church and Richard started Hinshaw's Building Service in Winchester in
1946. When the church needed new classrooms and office space in the1970s,
he served as the contractor for the meetinghouse annex and had a leading
role in the renovation of the parsonage. He frequently offered his carpentry
and building skills to make or supervise necessary repairs and improvements
around the church property. In 2000, he fashioned the "time capsule"
box to be opened on the church's 200th anniversary in 2073. After his
years as a youthful camper at Quaker Haven Camp came to an end, he continued
supporting the campÕs ministries through his volunteer labor, financial
support and encouragement of the church's youth to attend summer camps.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Mary Belle Hinshaw;
his parents; two brothers, Charles and Paul; and one sister, Sarah Jane.
Survivors include one daughter, Carol Liston; one son, Keith Hinshaw;
one sister, Mildred Snell; five grandchildren, Jeff Hinshaw, Kritsin and
Jenny Reitenour, and Ron and Grant Liston; and one great-grandson, Sam
Reitenour.
HODGIN Frances Davis Hodgin, 87, October 12, 2003, Concord Friends
Meeting, North Carolina. Frances was born November 7, 1915, the daughter
of Carl Edgar Davis and Bertha Anthony Davis. She was a lifetime member
of Concord Friends Meeting and served as a Sunday school teacher for the
fellowship class for many years. She also served on numerous committees
in the church. Frances was a member of the Missionary Society and served
as its president for many years. She researched and recorded the history
of Concord Friends Meeting. She was also employed by Blue Bell for over
25 years and retired from Battleground Veterinary Hospital as the office
manager. She was preceded in death by her husband, Everette Clarence Hodgin;
her parents; two sisters, Irene Little and Marie Fields; and one brother,
Carl E. Davis Jr. Survivors include four daughters, Betty Carter, Juanita
Best, Violet McBride Rayle, and June Pope Cox; one sister, Gladys Dean;
one brother, Robert Arnold Davis; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
KENDALL Robert Cecil Kendall, 80, March 18, 2003, New Garden Friends
Meeting, Indiana. Robert was born September 16, 1922 to Walter J. and
Caroline (Johnson) Kendall. He was a member of New Garden Friends Meeting
where he served as Trustee, on the Cemetery Association and a representative
to White's Institute. He also served as President of Webster Cemetery
Association. He was retired from Belden. He was preceded in death by two
brothers. Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Kendall; two daughters, Sherry
Dickerson and Vickie Green; three sons, Dwight, Larry and Keith Kendall;
10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, John Kendall; one
sister, Lucille Kendall; two nieces and two nephews.
MARLETTE Mildred Marlette, 90, October 23, 2003, New Garden Friends
Meeting, North Carolina. A native of Alamance County, North Carolina,
she was a member of New Garden Friends Meeting, a Navy veteran of WWII
and a retired professor of English at Guilford College, where she taught
for 30 years. She graduated from Guilford College in 1935 and taught in
public schools until enlisting in the Navy. After her discharge, she attended
UNC-Chapel Hill, where she received her master's degree. She then started
teaching at Guilford College in 1948. In 1975, she received the Distinguished
Alumna Award from the Guilford College Alumni Association. She was preceded
in death by her parents, Jonathan Lawrence Marlette and Kiva Andrews Marlette,
and one brother, Frank Marlette. Survivors include one sister-in-law,
Edith Mann Marlette; two nephews, William "Bill" R. Marlette
and David Franklin Marlette; two great-nieces, Sherri Marlette Spraggins
and Kristi Michelle Marlette; and two great-nephews, Shaun William Marlette
and Jonathan David Marlette.
OSBORNE Rev. Donald Lee Osborne, 64, September 28, 2003, Centre
Friends Meeting, North Carolina, after a brief illness. Don was born on
March 20, 1939 to pastor J. Norman and Alice Teague Osborn attended Guilford
College and served as a Quaker Pastor for 43 years, ministering at Rocky
River, Jamestown, Marlboro, Concord, Prosperity, Cane Creek and Centre
Friends Meetings in North Carolina. An active member of North Carolina
Yearly Meeting, he served on the Board of Directors for the Sword of Peace,
the North Carolina Friends Historical Society, Friends Homes and Chaired
the North Carolina Yearly Meeting Executive Committee, among others. Don
also served his community and state. He chaired the Randolph County Board
of Education for most of the 12 years he was on the board, and served
as a member and chair of the Board of Directors for Quaker Lake Camp.
He also served two terms on the Disciplinary Hearing Commission of the
North Carolina State Bar. Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Virginia
"Ginger" Bulla Osborne; two sons, Jay Lyndon and Lindley David;
one granddaughter, Emily Elizabeth Carter; and one sister, Sally O. Cornwell.
SARVAY Amy Hutchison Sarvay, 65, October 12, 2003, Chatham Friends
Meeting, North Carolina, after three months of failing health. Amy was
a native of Wake County, North Carolina, a member of Chatham Friends Meeting,
a homemaker and a member of the Eli Whitney Ruritan Club. She was preceded
in death by her husband, John F. Sarvay, and her parents, Jesse Joe Hutchison
and Ruth McPherson Marsh Hutchison. Survivors include four daughters,
Elizabeth Grove Johnson, Karin Grove Doggett, Donna Sarvay Stone, Ann
Sarvay; three sons, James Richard Grove Jr., Carlson and John Sarvay Jr.;
13 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
WHITE Marion Goldsberry White, 93, July 8, 2003, Knightstown Friends
Meeting, Indiana. Marion was born June 16, 1910, to Walter Goldsberry
and Hattie Goldsberry Osborn. She was a school teacher and a member of
Knightstown Friends Meeting. She was preceded in death by one son. Survivors
include her husband, Joseph; two sons, Donald and Louis; two brothers;
one sister; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
