Deaths

ALLEN Peter Thomas "P.T." Allen, 82, November 1, 2003, Holly Spring Friends Meeting, North Carolina. He was a retired farmer and member of the Randolph Livestock Association. A member of Holly Spring Friends Meeting, he was active in the Adult Sunday school class. He also was a World War II Army veteran. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gertha Cox Allen and their daughter, Blana Sue Allen. Survivors include his wife, Elva Smith Allen; two sons, Stevie Allen and Eric Allen; one daughter, Cherri Cox; three stepsons, Carlton Joyce, Richard Joyce and Robert Joyce; two sisters, Ola Kenan and Josephine Moore; two brothers, Elmer and Clifton Allen; four grandchildren, Allen Cox, Devon Cox, Kaylee Allen and Landon Allen; two step-grandsons, James Joyce and Adam Joyce; and two adopted grandsons, Victor Coward and Tucker Coward.

KERN Wilma Kern, 86, August 11, 2003, First Friends Meeting, New Castle, Indiana. She was born August 30, 1916, to Carl and Nellie (Paddock) Wampler on a farm near Mt. Summit, Indiana, where she lived her entire life. Through her mother, she was descended from the early Quakers of Nantucket Island. Her uncle was Aaron Napier, well-known Friends pastor in Indiana Yearly Meeting, who was a leader in the founding of the Quaker Haven Camp. She taught social studies in several high schools and political science at Ball State University. Very active in New Castle First Friends, she served as an Indiana Yearly Meeting representative to the Friends Committee on National Legislation. She is survived by her husband Lee, whom she married in 1941.

KEYS Eloise Keys, 89, October 22, 2003, Winchester Friends Meeting, Indiana. Eloise was born October 1, 1914, in Winchester to Claude and Zella Carter Wolfe. She and her husband Gordon were active in Winchester Friends Meeting where Eloise was received in membership in 1928. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon. Survivors include one son, Larry Keys; two daughters, Norma Ludy and Anita Stone; and one sister, Evelyn Fields.

McCRACKEN Emmett Francis McCracken, 86, August 11, 2003, Fayetteville Friends Meeting, Arkansas. Emmett was born October 4, 1917 in Rose Hill, Kansas, to David Nelson and Velma Alice Hinshaw McCracken. During World War II, he was a conscientious objector and served at CPS camps in Merom, Indiana and Trenton, North Dakota. After the war, Emmett attended and worked at Penn College in Oskaloosa, Iowa. He traveled the state of Iowa as a dairy tester. He was an active participant of South Central Yearly Meeting of Friends and he frequently attended two services each Sunday — one in Springfield, Missouri and the other in Fayetteville, Arkansas — 50-60 miles apart. He was the clerk of the Peace and Social Justice Committee of the yearly meeting in the 1990s. His only brother, Preston Cloyce, passed away four days later on August 15, 2003. Survivors include four sisters, Gladys Campbell, Lucile Cook, Alice Hobson and Thelma Holsey, and numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

McCRACKEN Preston Cloyce McCracken, 87, August 15, 2003, Paulina Friends Meeting, Iowa. Preston was born February 27, 1916 in Rose Hill, Kansas, to David Nelson and Velma Alice Hinshaw McCracken. During World War II, he was a Conscientious Objector and served in the Civilian Peace Services (CPS), at Merom, Indiana, Warren, Pennsylvania and Ames, Iowa. On December 24, 1942, he married Dorothy Harding. Preston was an active member of the Paulina Friends Meeting, Iowa, and organized and was President of the Northwest Iowa Mentally Retarded Children's Association. His wife, Dorothy, died suddenly on February 4, 1967. Ten years later, he married Georgia Downs on July 3, 1977. In 1986 they started living full time in Zepherhills, Florida. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy; one daughter, Evelyn Louise and one brother Emmett. Survivors include his wife, Georgia; two sons, Ray Everett and Dale Eugene; one daughter, Beth Etta; and four sisters, Gladys Campbell, Lucile Cook, Alice Hobson, and Thelma Holsey.

PEEBLES Jeanette Louise (Mathias) Peebles, 75, October 15, 2003, Wabash Friends Meeting. Jeanette was born April 11, 1928, to Russell and Charlotte (Dielman) Mathias. She married Preston Peebles February 5, 1961, in Miami County. A homemaker, she was a member of Wabash Friends Meeting. She received an Associate's degree from International Business College. She was preceded in death by husband Preston. Survivors include one daughter, Connie Peebles; one son, Roger; one stepdaughter, Phyllis Lemons; one stepson, Vaughn Peebles; one sister, Margaret Hollenback; two grandchildren, Isaac Peebles and Emma Peebles; five step-grandchildren; and 10 step-great-grandchildren.

REYNOLDS W. Nathan Reynolds, 89, October 30, 2003, First Friends Meeting, Greensboro, North Carolina. A native of Guilford County, his parents were Herbert W. and Fanny Ozment Reynolds. He graduated from Guilford College and received a Master's degree from the University of North Carolina. He was a veteran of World War II. He was a banker and then served in various capacities at Mount Olive College. After retirement, he continued teaching evening classes at Guilford Technical Community College. A lifelong Quaker, he served as treasurer of his meeting and treasurer of the North Carolina Friends Historical Society at Guilford College. Other civic activities include: president of Goldsboro Area Chamber of Commerce, president of the Goldsboro Chapters of the American Cancer Society and NC Symphony Association, member of the Salvation Army board, member of the Executive board of the Tuscarora Council of Boy Scouts of America and president of the Fayetteville Lions Club. He was preceded in death by four brothers, John, Paul, David and Thomas and two sisters, Ruth Hockett and Mary Starbuck. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Lyon Shotwell Reynolds; one daughter, Kathryn Reynolds Setzer; one granddaughter, Katie Setzer Kamphausen; and 25 nieces and nephews.

STEELMAN Helen Hobson Steelman, 73, October 27, 2003, Deep Creek Meeting, Yadkinville, North Carolina. Born on March 17, 1930, Helen was the oldest child of Claude Henry and Jamie Norman Hobson. She attended Guilford College. Helen and Roy A. Steelman were married on June 3, 1950 in the Forbush Friends Meetinghouse. They then moved into the house that Roy built next to his parents in the Deep Creek Friends community. She worked alongside Roy on the farm as well as becoming an active member of Deep Creek Meeting and the Deep Creek/Yadkinville School community. Her last employment was as a Reading Program Teaching Assistant at Yadkinville School. Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Roy A. Steelman; three sons, Rick, Terry and Don Steelman; seven grandchildren, Alex, Spencer, Rebekah, Seth, Caleb, Ashlyn and Rhett Steelman; one sister, Lunda Honeycutt; and two brothers, Charles and David Hobson.

WARDEN Guy Huston Warden, 83, October 25, 2003, Deep Creek Friends Meeting, Yadkinville, North Carolina. Guy was born May 20, 1920, to Wesley Lawrence and Effie Caroline Steelman Warden. He was a minister among Friends for 45 years and served several churches throughout Yadkin County, North Carolina, as well as a church in Galax, Virgina, for 18 years. He was also a retired farmer and a member of Deep Creek Friends Meeting. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters and four brothers. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Elsie Williams Warden; one daughter, Shirley Angell; four sons, Lawrence, Wade, Donald and Jimmy Warden; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one brother, John Warden.

WELLONS Harry A. Wellons, 93, July 11, 2003, Bethel Friends Meeting, Franklin, Virginia. He and his wife, Esther served under the American Friends Board of Missions to Jamaica from 1938 to 1947. He retired from the Virginia Department of Rehabilitation and served as mayor of Victoria, Virginia for 22 years. Survivors include his wife, Esther and one daughter, Martha Dentiste.
