ATKINSON Dorothy L. Rutledge Atkinson, 91, May 13, 2004, Plainfield Friends Church, Indiana. Dorothy was born March 10, 1913, the second of eight children born to Horace and Mary Rutledge. She married Maurice (Bill) Atkinson on March 26, 1937. Dorothy and Bill were farmers for years until the late 1950s. Dorothy became a cook for Plainfield Schools and then retired as salad supervisor from the kitchen of RCA in Indianapolis. Dorothy was a member of Plainfield Friends Church, Fairfield Home Economics Club, Sugar Grove Home Economics Club, Plainfield Quaker Home Builders and the Plainfield Old Timers Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill and one son, Alfred, who died in infancy. Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn and Judy; one grandson, Jarrod Cowel; one granddaughter, Jaymie Pool; three brothers, Marvin, Leroy and Wayne Rutledge; two sisters, Marie Higgins and Ruth Adams; and many nieces and nephews.

BAXENDALE William “Bill” Baxendale, 78, December 22,2003, Plainfield Friends Meeting, Indiana. William was born February 12, 1925. He was a graduate of the University of Michigan and an architect. He was on the team that developed the plans for Western Yearly Meeting’s Friends Apartments, located behind the Plainfield Meetinghouse. Bill served on many monthly meeting committees. He adhered to the Quaker query concerning simplicity of lifestyle. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria, and one daughter, Jane Baxendale Finkle.

BRAXTON Bonnie Woody Braxton, 93, June 18, 2004, Chatham Friends Meeting, Burlington, North Carolina. Bonnie was the daughter of Fernando and Lona Cheek Woody. A retired farmer and homemaker, she was a member of Chatham Friends Meeting and a member of the Home Demonstration Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Taft Braxton and both parents. Survivors include one son, Howard T. Braxton, Jr.; one daughter, Brenda B. Smith; one brother, Tom Woody; three sisters, Eula Braxton, Edith Fain and Mettie Payne; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. GREENE Annie Edith Sheron Greene, 93, July 30, 2004, Glenwood Friends Church, North Carolina. She was employed by Mock- Judson-Voehringer Co., Belk’s, F. W. Woolworth, Sumner School Cafeteria, Vandalia School Cafeteria, Lambert’s Barbecue and Spring Valley Restaurant. She reluctantly laid down her apron and retired from Spring Valley Restaurant at age 90. One of the highlights of her employment was witnessing first-hand the F. W. Woolworth civil rights sit-ins. Throughout her life, this historical experience instilled in her a constant desire to serve anyone, regardless of individual color or background. She was a dedicated church worker and faithful pastor’s wife, unconditionally ministering to children’s Sunday School classes and/or youth groups in 10 churches. She was a member of Glenwood Friends Church and the James Sunday School Class. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Lucy Sheron; her husband, Rev. Robert Lee Greene; three brothers, Joe Sheron, Fred Sheron and Albert Sheron; and five sisters, Mozelle Weathers, Roni Fields, Mary Brown, Minnie Jenkins and Julie Horne Redding. Survivors include two daughters, Rev. Dr. Linda Anne Greene and Karen Sue Greene.

GRIFFIN Esther Lucille Griffin, 83, August 31, 2004, Cane Creek Friends Meeting, Burlington, North Carolina. Esther was born February 5, 1921, the daughter of Allen J. and Mary Celo (Thompson) Griffin. She was a member of Cane Creek Friends and a former manager of The Pines, Chapel Hill. Survivors include her husband, Murray; one son, Larry F. Griffin; two grandchildren; three stepgranddaughters; four great-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren. HARRIS Katherine Hedrick Harris, 50, August 30, 2004, South Plainfield Friends Meeting, Asheboro, North Carolina. Katherine was born July 7, 1954 to Charles Waldo and Pauline (Sumner) Hedrick. She was a graduate of High Point University and a 6th grade teacher at Randleman Middle School. She was a member of South Plainfield Friends Meeting and attended Cedar Square Friends Meeting. She was preceded in death by her father, Charles Waldo Hedrick. Survivors include her husband of 31 years, James “Chip” Harris, Jr.; two sons, James H. Harris, III and Jonathan Charles Harris; one daughter, Janna Marie Harris; three grandchildren, Bailey Hunter Routh, Adilein Lou Harris and Sophie James Pearl Harris; her mother, Pauline Sumner Hedrick; two brothers, Jefferson Charles Hedrick and William Thomas Hedrick; and one sister, Donna Hedrick. HILLIARD Michael Ray Hilliard, 52, September 14, 2004, Marlboro Friends Meeting, Randleman, North Carolina. Michael was a 1971 graduate of Randleman High School. He was a third generation owner/operator of Randleman Lumber Co. and past member of New Market Civitan Club. Survivors include his wife, Beverly Farlow Hilliard; three daughters, Megan Darlene, Leah Michelle and Mollie Elizabeth Hilliard; his mother, Bobby Routh Lineberry; two brothers, Lee and Vann Hilliard; and one sister, Gail Lucas. KELLER George (Garland) Keller, 75, September 15, 2004, Rocky River Friends Meeting, Greensboro, North Carolina. Garland was born October 20, 1929 to Bedford Murphy Keller and Susie Cooper Keller. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and owned and operated Keller Jewelry Store in Liberty for 30 years. He was preceded in death by one brother, Carlos Keller and one sister, Gertrude Keller Wicker. Survivors include his wife, Nancy Keller; one son, Randy Dale Keller; and four sisters, Janice Lowe, Nannie Mae Hinshaw, Lottie Carter and Inez Moon. KIRK Keith Harland Kirk, 77, August 7, 2003, Plainfield Friends Meeting, Indiana. Born August 3, 1926, in San Gabriel, California, to Giles Harley Kirk and Alice Christobel Bailey Kirk, Keith moved to Northern California at a year old to live with an aunt and uncle. His mother had been diagnosed with tuberculosis and spent much of her remaining life in a sanitarium. Keith was able to visit his parents only once a year and his mother died when he was 12. His father married Lena Kirk and two sisters and a brother were added to the family. Keith, meanwhile, continued to live with his uncle and aunt until he left for Pacific Bible College in Azusa, California, where he met his love, Marian Battershall. They married on June 29, 1948 in Bell Friends Church. Together, they served in a lifelong calling to the Friends ministry. Spending over 50 years as a Quaker pastor, they served at Fresno, California; Carmel, Indiana; Citrus Heights, California; Oskaloosa, Iowa; and Plainfield, Indiana where they served until Keith’s retirement in 1996. He was preceded in death by one son, Kenneth Loren. Survivors include his wife, Marian; one son James; two daughters Alice Kalso and Carol Kristapovich; eight grandchildren, Amy, Paul and Danny Kristapovich, Katie and Nathan Kirk, Timothy and Jason Kalso and Sharon Kalso Neal; one brother, Richard Kirk; and two sisters Maurinea Johnson and Charmaine Hengel.

PIKE Alan Walter Pike, August 15, 2004, Syracuse Friends Meeting, New York. Alan served faithfully in the Society of Friends action activities including working against the death penalty. He was a retired social worker, born in Freeport, Long Island and educated at Alfred and Adelphi Universities. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Joyce H. Pike; two daughters, Abby Corey and Anne M. Pike Imperial; one son, Charles A. Pike and four grandchildren. POHLENZ Kenneth Lee Pohlenz, 79, Argonia Friends Church, Kansas. Kenneth was born March 19, 1925, at Argonia, the youngest child of George M. and Elsie Scott Pohlenz. He attended the Friends Church from an early age and was a member of the Argonia Friends Church again during retirement. Following high school graduation, he was drafted into the army where he served in the occupation forces in Europe. Following discharge from the service, he worked for Horton Furniture Company until he decided to further his education. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Friends University in 1955. and proceeded to Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky, where he received his Masters of Divinity degree in 1958. For 34½ years, he pastored Friends churches in Indiana, Iowa and Kansas, retiring from Hesston in 1991. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Floyd. Survivors include his wife, Ruth; three sons, Michael, Richard and Randall; one daughter, Andrea Intlekofer; 12 grandchildren; two brothers, Dorsey and Gaylord; and one sister, Melva Joy Pearce.

SMITH Donald C. Smith, 83, August 14, 2004, Valley Friends Church, Londonderry, Ohio. Donald was born February 24, 1921, to Henry Albert and Ida Victoria Dixon Smith. On February 3, 1946, he married Geneva Downs. He was a WW II veteran serving in the US Army, 753rd Railroad Shop Battalion and he retired from Wearever. He faithfully attended Valley Friends Church and was active. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Carol Ann McGraw; two sisters; and eight brothers. Survivors include his wife, Geneva (Down) Smith; one son, Steven Smith; two daughters, Connie Weber and Kathy Murray; three grandchildren, Travis McGraw, Stephanie Butler and Justin Murray; one great granddaughter, Holli Ann McGraw; and two brothers, Cletis and Owen Smith.

THOMAS Charles F. Thomas, 94, August 3, 2004, First Friends Meeting, Richmond, Indiana. Charles was born November 9, 1909, at Battle Creek, Michigan, to Neva Craven Kennedy and Charles Kennedy. He was later orphaned and raised by Norris and Mina Thomas, of Dexter, Iowa, from age two to 10. He was then placed in White’s Manual Labor Institute, a Quaker orphanage in Iowa, where he lived for five years. Charles received a Bachelor of Arts from William Penn College, Oskaloosa, Iowa, a Bachelor of Divinity from Garrett Theological Seminary, Evanston, Illinois, and a Master of Arts in Divinity from Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois. He was recorded as a Minister of the Gospel by Iowa Yearly Meeting in 1935. His pastoral ministry included Friends Meetings in Iowa, North Carolina, Indiana and Illinois. For seven years, he served on the staff of Friends United Meeting in various capacities: as secretary for Young Friends Work, secretary of the board on Christian Education, editor of Sunday School Literature and clerk of the executive council of the Friends United Meeting from 1962 to 1968. Charles also was associate professor of Applied Studies at Earlham School of Religion from 1963 to 1974. He was the author of “The Nature and Mission of the Church for Friends” and was editor of “The Church in Quaker Thought and Practice.” He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lucile Albery Thomas, who died in 2001. Survivors include his wife, Mary Alice Scott Thomas; one son, Charles S.; one daughter, Karen Karns; three stepdaughters, Karin Heflin, Kathleen Dillon and Christine Whitlock; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. WALTON Christine Milhous Walton, 90, April 11, 2003, Plainfield Friends Meeting, Indiana. Christine was born on October 12, 1912 to Mary Hodgin Milhous and John Milhous. She attended her freshman year at Westtown School and then graduated from Ben Davis High School. Indianapolis. She was a member and National Treasurer for the National Bell Association and also a member of the Eastern Star. She was an accountant secretary for Carson Insurance Agency in Plainfield, Indiana for 30 years. An active member of Plainfield Friends Meeting, Christine attended Meeting for Worship faithfully until her health prevented it, and she served regularly on a number of committees through the years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elvin Walton and her brother, David Milhous. Survivors include one son, Carl S. Walton; four grandchildren, Deura Addante, Lisa Reynolds, Carla Ahlen and Thomas Walton; and several great-grandchildren.

WHITT William Andy Whitt, Sr., 73, September 5, 2004, Centre Friends Meeting, Greensboro, North Carolina. William was born October 4, 1930, to Roy Lee and Christine Ivetus Marley Whitt. He owned and operated Whitt’s store since 1948. He also farmed and was a former member of the Moose Lodge. He was a member of Centre Friends Meeting, a Christian and had renewed his life with the Lord. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Charles Lee Whitt; and one sister, Edna Townsend. Survivors include two sons, William A. Whitt, Jr., and John D. Whitt; two daughters, Christine M. Ludwick and Bonnie S. Beaver; one brother, Roy Lee Whitt, Jr.; two sisters, Annie Mae Austin and Jeannette Taylor; nine grandchildren, Chad Whitt Ludwick, Cari Danae Ludwick, Shawn Leslee Ludwick, William Andy Whitt III, Karla Sue Whitt, Charles Edward Whitt, Keely Michelle Smith, John Dawson Whitt and Anna Leigh Whitt; one great-grandchild, Cameron James Ludwick; and several nieces and nephews.

ZENKE Mildred Zenke, 88, June 7,2004, Ridge Farm Friends Meeting, Illinois. Mildred was born October 12, 1915, to Jasper C. and Mary Archer Jones. She married Billie Zenke February 19, 1947 and lived her life as a homemaker on the farm. She was a member of the Ridge Farm Friends Church, United Society of Friends Women, Past Matron of Eastern Star and served on the election board of Love Township. In United Society of Friends Women, Mildred always helped with the making of quilts and crafts for special meetings and events. She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers and one sister. Survivors include two daughters, Karol Lea Baldwin and Pamela Peter; one brother; two sisters; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
