Deaths CHILTON Grady Franklin Chilton, 68, September 28, 2004, Pine Hill Friends Meeting, Pilot Mountain, North Carolina. Grady was born May 15, 1936, to John Lester and Zelphia Anna Jackson Chilton. He was a selfemployed builder and a member of Pine Hill Friends Meeting. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Ruby Covinton; and one brother, Benford Chilton. Survivors include his wife, Jo Ann Arrington Chilton; one daughter, Anna Leigh McHone; one son, Jeffrey Franklin Chilton; three grandchildren, Adam McHone, Samantha Chilton and Zachary Chilton; and one sister, Jewel Snow. CLINE Eddy S. Cline, 71, September 16, 2004, Farmland Friends Church, Indiana. Eddy was born on May 21, 1933 to George and Wilda (Vandegriff) Cline. He married Shirley Pomeroy on November 27, 1952. Eddy graduated from Taylor University (1966) and Asbury Theological Seminary (1971). He was an Air Force Veteran. Eddy pastored several churches, including Back Creek Friends, Mooreland Friends, and Center Friends Church (all in Indiana), before working for and becoming President of Christian Service International for 24 years. He was a member of the Quaker Haven Board, and Farmland Friends Church, where he was the Pastor of the Senior Adult Ministries. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Donita Harter. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Shirley M. Cline; one son, Robert Cline; one brother, George Cline; seven grandchildren, Wendy Gerard, and Sean, Allison, Madelini, Erika, JoAnna, and Laura Cline; and one great grandchild, Caly Lantz. COLEMAN Hannah Ruth Osborne Coleman, 85, September 19, 2004, Centre Friends Meeting, Greensboro, North Carolina. Hannah was a lifelong member of Centre Friends Meeting, where she was a Sunday school teacher for over 30 years and served on various church committees. She was retired from Laughlin Hosiery Mill after 37 years of service. She was preceded in death by her husband, Nurner Coleman. Survivors include one son, John Coleman; one daughter, Mary Allen; three granddaughters; and one greatgrandson. FULP James Wesley Fulp, 80, August 31, 2004, Forbush Friends Meeting, North Carolina. James was born on September 11, 1923, to Albert and Fannie Norman Fulp. He was a member of Forbush Friends Meeting, where he served as choir director and clerk of monthly meeting. He retired from the Coca-Cola Co. after 32 years in the service department. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Gladys Effie North and Elva Fulp Wooten; and one brother, Floyd Martin Fulp. Survivors include his wife, Sina C. Fulp; one son, Michael J. Fulp; two grandchildren, Michael Fulp, Jr. and Monica Fulp; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. KEMP Dorothy Lee Cashatt Kemp, 88, October 18, 2004, Asheboro Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Dorothy was born August 23, 1916, the daughter of William and Esther Cashatt. She was a a member of Asheboro Friends Meeting. She was preceeded in death by her husband of 64 years, Dewitt Kemp; and one grandson, Guy Teachey Kemp. Survivors include one daughter, Susan Kemp Tysinger; two sons, Tom Kemp and Phil Kemp; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one brother, Roy Gene Cashatt. LOFLIN Louise Webster Loflin, 77, September 27, 2004, Marlboro Friends Meeting, Sophia, North Carolina. Louise was formerly employed with First Union National Bank in Randleman and retired from Petty Enterprises after 28 years of service. She was a member of Marlboro Friends Meeting, where she was treasurer, choir member and soloist. She was preceded in death by her sister, Betty W. Knighten. Survivors include her husband, Clifford Wayne Loflin; one son, Clifford Wayne Loflin, Jr.; two daughters, Linda Loflin Thuotte and LuEllen Loflin Morgan; six grandchildren, Daniel and Rachel Loflin, Laura and Gregory Thuotte, and Madelyn and Wyatt Morgan; and one brother, Reid S. NEESE Doris Montgomery Jackson Neese, 84, September 19, 2004, Spring Garden Friends Meeting, Greensboro, North Carolina. Doris was born on October 9, 1919, the second of six daughters of Mary Williford and W.W. Montgomery. She was devoted to Spring Garden Friends Meeting and served in several capacities within the North Carolina Friends Yearly Meeting and its mission outreach for as long as her health allowed. She was an avid seamstress and craftsperson, and many children in the U.S. and Mexico have been delighted by her gifts of stuffed animals. Survivors include one son, Charles B. Jackson II; one daughter, Judy Jackson Lomax; four grandchildren, Jon Easter, Shannon Christopher, Carmen Christopher and Paul Jackson; one great-grandchild, Charlie Easter; two sisters, Mary Ruth Walton and Rosa Lee Stubblefield; a special friend, Leila Mae Cummings; and numerous nieces and nephews. STRAWSER Corydon “Cordy” Louis Strawser, 75, September 12, 2004, Second Friends, Indianapolis, Indiana. Cordy was born to Corydon H. and Berdella (Van Blaricum) Strawser on August 24, 1929. He married Patricia J. (Edwards) Strawser on September 25, 1955. Cordy was an active member of Second Friends all his life, serving in every capacity at one time or the other. He was employed for 35 years at Indiana Bell and after taking early retirement he was busy with working for H&R Block, being a substitute bus driver for Decatur Township Schools, gardening, sharing his produce and being a member of Telephone Pioneers of America. Survivors include his wife, Patricia J. (Edwards) Strawser; two sons, Corydon Lester and Robert Louis; and three grandchildren, Erin, Eric and Zoe. STEPHENS Ross Stephens, 83, June 11, 2004, Cane Creek Friends Meeting, Liberty, North Carolina. Ross was born to the late Passmore H. and Mannie Culberson Stephens. He was a farmer, lifetime member of Cane Creek Friends Meeting and a member of Quaker Men. He taught Sunday School and served on numerous committees. He was a charter member of the Snow Camp Fire Dept. and the Sylvan Ruritan Club, Hammer Board member for Sylvan School and member of the Board of Directors for Alamance Farm Bureau. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Troy Stephens and Walker Stephens. Survivors include his wife, Ruby Chandler Stephens; one son, Simon R. Stephens; two daughters, Nelda Stephens Kiser and Sylvia Stephens Rogers; one brother, Algie Stephens; two sisters, Alta Stephens McPherson and Lavina Primerano; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Vestal, 77, October 12, 2004, Forbush Friends Meeting, East Bend, North Carolina. Winford was born on March 29, 1927, to Hampton and Sarah Carter Vestal. He was a member of Forbush Friends Meeting. He helped establish Fall Creek Fire Department and served in the department for over 20 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Stella Spillman; and five brothers, Hayes, Avery, Charlie, Hillary and Junior Vestal. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Pearlie Steelman Vestal; five sons, James, Jerry, J.W., Joel and Jimmy Vestal; one daughter, Janet Vestal; nine grandchildren, Amy, John, Allen, Joseph, Sarah and Daniel Vestal, Tonya Hall, Michelle Collins and Jody Vestal; three great-grandchildren, Jarrett Hall, Bethany Vestal and William Vestal; two sisters, Marie Cave and Martha Spillman; and several nieces and nephews. WHITE Orville “Joe” White, 82, August 27, 2004, Minneapolis Friends Meeting, Min nesota. Joe grew up in the Hesper Friends Church, Iowa. He graduated from William Penn College in 1947. Joe was a conscientious objector (CO) during World War II and had three Civilian Public Service (CPS) posts. First was in Trenton, North Dakota, in a land reformation project, making river land suitable for farming. Then he worked two years at Cherokee State Hospital in Iowa. Last, he worked on a Heifer Project “cattle boat” taking horses to Poland after the war. Joe joined the Minneapolis Friends Meeting in 1951 and was a steadfast and influential member over the years. Joe served on the regional board of the American Friends Service Committee in Des Moines, and later he served on the national board of the American Friends Service Committee. He taught and coached in the Bloomington Schools (Minnesota) for 34 years. For three summers during his retirement years, Joe served as a volunteer lighthouse keeper in the Apostle Islands of Lake Superior. Joe was very involved in environmental and peace concerns. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Louise; two daughters, Betsy Souther and Patti Poladian; two sons, Brian and Alan; and six grandchildren.
