Jeff Kriehn and Erin Keith, August 7, 2004, Bethel Friends Meeting, Indiana. Deaths APPLEGATE Jerald C. Applegate, 88, July 9, 2004, Noblesville Monthly Meeting, Indiana. Born September 20, 1915 in Carmel, Jerald was the son of Cassius and Nell (VanLaningham) Applegate. He married Thelma Irene (Goodner) Applegate. Jerald served with the 2nd Division of the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He was a self-employed contractor. A member of Noblesville Monthly Meeting of Friends, he served the meeting faithfully for many years as a trustee and as a consultant on repairs to the meetinghouse. He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Irene Applegate. Survivors include one daughter, Natalia Wilkins; one sister, Margaret Kitchens; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and four step greatgrandchildren. BOWEN William Kenneth Bowen, 76, January 12, 2005, Pilot View Friends Meeting, Yadkinville, North Carolina. William Bowen was born November 3, 1928, the son of William Curtis and Alma Brown Bowen. He was a faithful member of Pilot View Friends Meeting, where he served on the Ministry Counsel and sang in the choir. He was employed at Thomasville Furniture for 42 years. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Dorothy Brown Bowen; two daughters, Becky Brewer and Janet Hennings; two grandsons, Brian Brewer and Nathan Hennings; one sister, Clara Macemore; two brothers, Frank Bowen and Donald Bowen; and several nieces and nephews. BRITT Byron Miles Britt, Sr., 41, January 28, 2005, First Friends Meeting, Greensboro, North Carolina. Byron Britt was an excellent musician who played for private and public schools, churches and colleges. He felt that his work as a financial planner was more than a job. Survivors include his wife, Sally; two sons, Byron Miles Britt Jr. and James Owen Britt; his parents, Billy and Viola Britt; one sister, Joy Britt Reavis; one brother-in-law, Dan Reavis; nephew, John Reavis and niece Katie Reavis. COLTRANE David Ricky Coltrane, 46, February 1, 2005, Cedar Square Friends Meeting, North Carolina. David Coltrane was born July 20, 1958 to Gene and Faye Peele Coltrane. He was a member of Cedar Square Friends Meeting where he was dedicated to operating the sound system of the church. He was employed at Radio Shack as a sales associate, and was a United States Marine veteran. Survivors include two daughters, Katey Coltrane and Jeannie Coltrane; his parents, Gene and Faye Coltrane; his fiancee, Pam Cecil; two brothers, Tommy Coltrane and Steve Coltrane; two grandchildren, Jeran Rook and Lexi Coltrane and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorials may be sent to Cedar Square Friends Meeting, Sound System Fund, 7546 Harlow Road, Archdale, NC, 27263. HORTON C. J. Horton, 85, January 10, 2005, Whittier First Friends Church, California. C. J., a birthright Quaker, was born in Bell, California. After his graduation from Whittier High School, he attended the Frank Wiggins Trade School of Los Angeles; his first job was with a construction firm in Victorville, California. In 1941 his truck was run off the road at the construction site and he was so seriously injured he was given but one year to live. He lost the use of his legs and spent the balance of his life using wheelchairs. C. J. was interested in music and art and served on the Music Board of Whittier First Friends Church for many years. Survivors include one brother, James Horton; two sisters, Peggy McMillan and Dorys King; and several nieces and nephews. JOYCE Maurice Joyce, 91, January 8, 2005, Whittier First Friends Church, California. Maurice Joyce was born in Atlantic, Iowa. His mother was a Quaker, but as there was no Quaker Meeting in town the family attended the Methodist Church. Maury graduated from Penn College in Oskaloosa, Iowa and earned his M.A. degree from Whittier College. It was there he met Lois Hunnicutt, and they were married in 1940. Maury taught in the Norwalk Excelsior School District, in Julian, California, and in East Whittier. He and Lois resided in Whittier where they were extremely active members of First Friends Church. As Lois is the great-granddaughter of Quakers Jonathan and Rebecca Bailey, the first settlers in Whittier, both of them often rode in Whittier Founders Day parades, dressed as early Quakers. In 1996 they moved to Quaker Gardens retirement home in Stanton, California. Survivors include his wife, Lois; two sons, Gordon and Richard; one daughter, Marilyn; and six grandchildren. OWEN Elizabeth C. (Hess) Owen, 96, January 15, 2004, Noblesville Monthly Meeting, Indiana. Betty was born on November 11, 1907 to Arthur and Grace (Walwork) Hess in Indianapolis, Indiana. Elizabeth worked as a hostess for many restaurants in the Indianapolis area for over 25 years. She attended Butler University and University of Cincinnati. She was a member of First Friends and a former member of O.E.S. Indianapolis Chapter. Upon her marriage to John Owen, she became a member of the Noblesville Meeting. She was preceded in death by one son, Donald Bettge. Survivors include two sons, Robert Bettge and Richard Bettge; one daughter, Barbara Jackson; three step-daughters, Virginia Fearinn, Vickie Meeks and Annie Woodruff; and many greatgreat- grandchildren. PIERCE Frances Bean Pierce, 75, January 21, 2005, Thomasville Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Frances Pierce was born January 29, 1929, to Bennie and Edith Rothrock Bean. She was a member of Thomasville Friends Meeting and a former member of Poplar Ridge Friends Meeting for 27 years. She retired from Dr. Shelly York’s office after 25 years of service. In 1948 she married Rev. W.A. (Barney) Pierce. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Joyce Beck. Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Janice Spainhour and Gay Willard; one brother, Harold Bean; and six grandchildren. Memorials may be sent to Thomasville Friends Meeting, P.O. Box 930, Thomasville, NC, 27360. VESTAL Joyce Hoots Vestal, 87, January 20, 2005, Harmony Grove Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Joyce Vestal was born April 30, 1917 to John F. and Suphronia Nicks Hoots. She was an active member of Harmony Grove Friends Meeting and especially enjoyed the outings of the Jolly Friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, C. Grant Vestal; her parents; three brothers, Marvin, Milburn and John Lee Hoots; and three sisters, Connie Pinnix, Ollie Shurgart and Georgie Prevette. Survivors include two sons, John W. Vestal and Ronald Gray Vestal; two grandchildren, Lisa Vestal Moncus and Wendy Vestal Rockett; and four great-grandchildren. Memorials may be sent to Harmony Grove Friends Meeting, P.O. Box 546, Yadkinville, NC, 27055. WHEATON Gayle A. Wheaton, 88, December 6, 2004, Noblesville Monthly Meeting, Indiana. Gayle Wheaton was born April 28, 1916 in Westfield, the daughter of Charles and Minnie (Briles) Alien. She was married to Ralph Wheaton on May 30, 1952. She was a member of Noblesville Monthly Meeting of Friends and the Senior Citizens Organization. She was an active member of USFW and served the meeting for many years on the Funeral Dinner Committee and the Flower Committee. She was the manager of the cafeteria at Noblesville High School for 20 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Wheaton; two sisters and three brothers. Survivors include two daughters, Suzanne Dowen and Janis Mitchell; two grandchildren, Ashley Dowen and Jordan Mitchell; two step-grandchildren, Cyndie Lively and Brittany Mitchell; and four step-great grandchildren. WILLIAMS Lawrence Columbus Williams, December 29, 2003, Pilot View Friends Meeting, Yadkinville, North Carolina. Lawrence was a loyal and faithful member of Pilot View Friends Meeting. He taught Sunday School, served as Superintendent and sang in the choir. He was clerk of Monthly Meeting, served on Ministry and Council as clerk, as well as several committees including Stewardship and Finance, Cemetery, Trustee and Christian Growth and Training. Lawrence also served on some Yearly Meeting committees and was Recording Clerk for Quarterly Meeting. Lawrence was instrumental in the meeting’s building programs. ZIMMERMAN Mary Elizabeth Zimmerman, 79, January 3, 2005, Atlanta Friends Meeting. Mary was born February 22, 1925 to Stella Weekley and Melvin W. Jackson of Muncie, Indiana. After high school she worked as a waitress, meat department clerk and in the defense industry. She was introduced to Friends by Robert E. Zimmerman and they were married on May 5, 1943 at the Friends parsonage in Portland, Indiana while Bob was on leave from the U. S. Navy. After Bob’s return from military service, they became members of Friends Memorial Church in Muncie, Indiana and participated in many meeting activities. She represented Indiana Yearly Meeting on the American Section of the Friends World Committee for Consultation for several years and was Secretary to the Superintendent of Indiana Yearly Meeting. As a young mother she was a Girl Scout leader and a Cub Scout den mother, as well as a volunteer driver for the Red Cross taking people to medical appointments. In 1976, she and Bob moved to Marietta, Georgia and became members of the Atlanta Friends Meeting where she served as Membership Recorder for many years. She took classes in transcribing the printed word into Braille, and after being certified by the Library of Congress, she spent countless hours over the next 20 years transcribing into Braille textbooks, library books and special assignments for schools and individuals. She was a member of the Atlanta Braille Volunteers, serving as president for two years, and taught Braille classes for a number of years. She was also a member of the National Braille Association, and regularly volunteered for Blood Drives conducted by the Red Cross in the Atlanta Area. She and her husband Bob were members of the National Railway Historical Society and Mary volunteered as a docent at the Southeastern Railway Museum. In June 2002, Bob and Mary moved to Lawrenceburg, Indiana to be near their daughter Suzanne. Mary was preceded in death by one son, Mark, age 10 in 1959 and two older brothers, Alan O. and Charles R. Jackson. Survivors include her husband, Bob; one daughter, Suzanne K. Zimmerman; one brother, Rex Jackson; one sister, Janet Valencia; two sisters-in-law Chloris Daghlian and Esther Jackson; several nieces and nephews.
