Deaths

BEESON Roger William Beeson, 54, March 5, 2005, Cedar Square Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Roger Beeson was born September 14, 1950, in High Point, to John Harold and Lelia Mae McDowell Beeson. Along with his brother, Blake Beeson, he owned and operated Beeson’s Rhododendron Nursery, Inc., in Randleman, North Carolina. He was a member of the American Rhododendron Society and the North Carolina Nursery Association. He was a member of Cedar Square Friends Meeting. On May 5, 1984, he married Pamela Anne Phillips. He was preceded in death by his father. Survivors include his wife, Pamela; his mother, Lelia Mae Beeson; one sister, Ann Marie Beeson Sasser; one brother, John Blake Beeson; and six nephews, Chad Sasser, John McKinley Beeson, Quinn and Patrick Phillips and Charlie and Geoff Thornburg. FARLOW Raeford Farlow, 88, February 2, 2005, Marlboro Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Raeford Farlow was born April 7, 1916, to Lawrence and Blanche Hill Farlow. He attended Marlboro Friends Meeting and retired from Drexel Heritage. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Clarice McDowell Nelson. Survivors include five sisters, Virgie Coltrane, Clata Hardin, Earline Taylor, Pauline Allred and Wilma Cook; nine nephews and eight nieces. GAMBLE Mary Frances Chilton Gamble, 78, March 4, 2005, Centre Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Frances was born December 13, 1926, to C.W. and Minnie White Chilton. She was a retired elementary school teacher for both Randolph and Guilford County schools, held a Masters Degree in education and music and was a member of various teacher organizations. She was a birthright Quaker and served Centre Friends Meeting in many ways—as Sunday School teacher and choir director for many years, interim organist, clerk of Centre Friends Meeting and youth worker. Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Charles Vance Gamble, Jr.; one daughter, Teresa Gamble Baggish; one son, Charles Vance Gamble III; one sister, Margie Alma Chilton Vaughn; three grandchildren, Leigha Frances Gamble, Leslie Faye Gamble Landreth and Charles Vance Gamble IV; five step-grandchildren, Jeremy Baggish, Alan Baggish, Peter Baggish, Lisa Caso and Linda Baggish; numerous nieces and nephews. HOSKINS Moses Hoskins, 81, February 12, 2005, College Avenue Friends Church, Oskaloosa, Iowa. Moses was born February 16, 1923 on the family farm near Fremont, Iowa, where he took over the farm work as an adult. Moses met Sybil Jones at church youth gatherings while she was attending William Penn College. They were married in Sybil’s hometown of South China, Maine on August 27, 1949 and were true partners for the 55 years they shared together. Moses farmed the land, raised cattle and hogs. He was also employed by McCurdy Seed Company in Fremont for many years. Moses mentored teens each summer when he led the crews to detassel corn. As a lifetime member of College Avenue Friends Church, he served on several committees including the Board of Trustees and the Board on Coordination for the Iowa Yearly Meeting of Friends. Moses was preceded in death by one brother, Joseph. Survivors include his wife, Sybil; two daughters, Marion Channell and Margaret Good; one grandson, Isaac; one brother Ellis; and two sisters-in-law, Elva and Helen Hoskins. Memorials may be sent to the Iowa Yearly Meeting Capital Campaign for the encouragement of leadership training.

LINDLEY Cheryl Ann Pemberton Lindley, 57, December 1, 2004, Paoli Friends Meeting, Indiana. Cheryl was born April 12, 1947, to Jesse and Mabel Jones Pemberton. She attended Vincenne University. Cheryl married Robert Lindley November 10, 1967. She was an employee of Orange County Bank, Paoli Chamber of Commerce and Ski Paoli Peaks. She worked with her husband, Bob, in management of the family business, Mi-Lin Wood Products Corp. She was a member of Paoli Friends Meeting. She also served on the Board of Directors for Orange County Convention and Visitors Bureau and was a long time member of Upsilon Chapter of Phi Beta Psi Philanthropic Sorority and directed the Paoli Indian Summer Festival Queen Pageant. She volunteered with the Miss America Organization serving as co-local director for the Miss Southern Heartland pageant, a preliminary to Miss Indiana. She was preceeded in death by one sister, Jody. Survivors include her husband, Bob; two children, Jolie & Jessica; one grandson, Landon Amick; and four sisters Margy, Debby, Brenda and Mylea.

MATTHEWS Juneous Robert “Doonie” Matthews, 84, March 10, 2005, Forbush Friends Meeting, North Carolina. He was born May 22, 1920, to T.H. Matthews and Emma Hauser Matthews. He was retired from R.J. Reynolds and was a member of Forbush Friends Meeting. He also served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was preceded in death by one brother, Nelson Matthews; two sisters, Juanita Richardson and Nell Freeman; and three half brothers, Marshall Matthews, Herman Matthews and Vene Matthews. Survivors include his wife, Grace St. John Matthews; one son, Timothy Matthews; three brothers, Mawyer Matthews, Charles Matthews and Billy Matthews; and one sister, Edith Russell. MURPHY David Laine Murphy, 65, February 5, 2005, Prosperity Friends Meeting, North Carolina. David Murphy was a graduate of Malone College in Canton, Ohio, and English professor at Sandhills Community College, English teacher at West Montgomery High School and served as Director of Federal Programs for Montgomery County Schools. He also worked as a lay minister in Jackson Springs Presbyterian Church and Ben Salem Presbyterian Church, and was the present minister of Prosperity Friends Meeting. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Williams Murphy; two daughters, Deidra Murphy Steed and Dacia Laine Murphy-Price; one son, Brian David Murphy; five grandchildren. REYNOLDS Inez Redding Reynolds, 83, February 9, 2005, Providence Friends Meeting, Pleasant Garden, North Carolina. Inez Redding Reynolds was an active member of Providence Friends Meeting for 60 years. She had a special interest in the USFWI work and served in several positions in the Providence USFWI. She also served as Christian Service Secretary of North Carolina Yearly Meeting and enjoyed sharing her service and time with the American Friends Service Committee. She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, A. Ray Reynolds. Survivors include one daughter, Debbie McPherson; two sons, Phillip R. Reynolds and Wayne E. Reynolds; five grandchildren and five great-grandsons.

RICKS Linwood T. Ricks Sr., 82, February 6, 2005, Bethel Friends Meeting, Franklin, Virginia. Linwood Ricks was a member of Bethel Friends Meeting and retired owner/operator of Cavalier Auto Service, Inc. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and served during WWII. Survivors include his wife, Christine J. Ricks; and four children, Ann Ricks, Linwood Ricks Jr., Vivian Nelson and Darryl Blanton.

SPENCER Robert Junior “Jun” Spencer, 80, March 15, 2005, Archdale Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Robert was born on September 27, 1924, to Rob and Flora Carmichael Spencer. He had owned and operated Red Dot Supermarket in Archdale and later was a meat broker for Central Carolina Wholesale Company. He was a member of Archdale Friends Meeting, the John Archdale Sunday School Class and Quaker Men. He was a United States Air Force veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was a charter member of the Dine and Dance Club, the Tempo Dance Club and the Archdale-Trinity Lions Club. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Harold Spencer. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Doris Brooks Spencer; two daughters, Brooks Spencer Mullane and Margaret “Meg” Spencer Cashion; two sons, Robert Spencer III and Alex Spencer; eight grandchildren, Elias Mullane, Elizabeth Mullane, Madeleine Mullane, Emily Mullane, Melinda Spencer, Jessica Spencer, Adam Spencer and Victoria Spencer; twin great-grandchildren, Ian and Farrah; fi ve sisters, Irene Farlow, Marie Nooe, Jeanette Tucker, Betty Lou Small and Janice Smith. WILLIAMS John Wade Williams, 90, February 12, 2005, Union Cross Friends Meeting, North Carolina. John Williams was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and received the Purple Heart for wounds sustained during combat in France. He married his wife of 59 years, Mattie Wilmoth Williams, after the war. He was a farmer and worked as a dye operator for Hanes for more than 29 years. Survivors include wife, Mattie W. Williams; two sons, Jerry and Steve Williams; one sister, Blanche Holcomb; four grandsons, Bryan, Jonathan, Craig and Keith Williams; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

YOUNGER Randolph R. Younger, 82, January 16, 2005, White Plains Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Randolph was born on January 14, 1923, to Harrison Seymour and Myrtle East Younger. He was a faithful member of White Plains Friends Meeting until his health declined. He was a veteran of the United States Navy during World War II and was retired from Proctor-Silex, Inc. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Benny Dale Younger. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Pauline Atkins Younger; one son, Harry Richard “Dick” Younger; two sisters, Treva Collins and Dorothy Mills; and six brothers, Kermit, Birchard, Bruce, Theodore “Pete”, Jim and Rex Younger.
