BAREFOOT Cleta Dawson Barefoot, 89, April 6, 2005, Bethesda Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Cleta was born November 25, 1915, to Erdiemouth Claudius Dawson and Lula Jane Mobley Dawson. She was a member of Bethesda Friends Meeting. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lemuel Barefoot; one daughter, Becky Denning; and two brothers, Julius Dawson and Kimber Dawson. Survivors include one daughter, Linda Bass; four grandchildren, Paula Bass, Julie Jackson, Carrol Gene Denning and Billy Pridgen; and seven great-grandchildren.

BERRY Sarah Janie Berry, 74, August 31, 2004, Fountain City Friends Meeting, Indiana. Sarah was born May 20, 1930 to Fred and Celia Rupe Killen. She was a retired employee of Barker’s Fireplace Shop in Richmond, a member of the Fountain City Friends Meeting, a 40 year member of the Rodalla Home Extension Club, a charter member of the Fountain City Fireman’s Wives, and an active member of the Fountain City Friends USFW. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Richard Killen and one sister, Ethel Brown. Survivors include her husband, Richard Berry whom she married December 18, 1949; one son, Rikk Berry; and one grandson, Richard Berry.

BLACKWELL Dorothy Varner Blackwell, 92, March 25, 2005, High Point Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Dorothy was born May 9, 1912, to William Bernard and Betty Lyndon Varner. She was married to James W. Blackwell. She was a member of High Point Friends Meeting, serving on Ministry and Counsel and other committees. She was also a member of United Society of Friends Women, serving as past president, Church Women United and the Board of Advisors of Friends Homes in Greensboro. She attended Pineland Junior College and retired from Tomlinson Furniture Company. She was also a longtime member and volunteer of the High Point Theater. She was preceded in death by her husband James. Survivors include one daughter Becke B. Jones; two grandsons, David R. Jones and Michael S. Jones; two sisters, Faith Varner and Martha Clontz. BODINE Thomas R. Bodine, 89, March 28, 2005, Hartford Monthly Meeting, Connecticut. Thomas was born October 10, 1915 to Katharine Hare Weeks and George Imlay Bodine, Jr. He helped to form a Quaker worship group, which led to the establishment of Hartford Monthly Meeting of Friends. He served six years as chairman of the Hartford office of American Friends Service Committee, five years as clerk of New England Yearly Meeting and three years as clerk of Friends United Meeting. He earned his B.A. in European History in 1937 from Wesleyan University. He worked with the Connecticut General Life Insurance Company retiring in 1976. As a conscientious objector in World War II, he served as Field Director, National Japanese-American Relocation Council, and served in War Relief in France. He also served as a Commissioner of the Hartford Housing Authority for over 20 years, was Chairman of the Community Renewal Team, a member of the NAACP and on the board of directors of the Connecticut Prison Association. He was preceded in death by his three siblings. Survivors include nine nieces and nephews. CARTER Chester Bill Carter, 79, March 26, 2005, Union Cross Friends Meeting, Yadkinville, North Carolina. Chester was born September 28, 1925 to Luther and Bessie Adams Carter. He was a member of Union Cross Friends Meeting. He was owner and operator of Bill Carter’s Garage and Grocery. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary Ruth Brown Carter; one daughter, Linda; one sister, Celia C. Murphy; and one brother, Dwain Curtis Carter. Survivors include one son, Bobby Carter; two daughters Cindy Milano and Becky Carter; two granddaughters, Jacqueline Sebastian and Samantha Milano; two great-grandsons, Kaleb Hodge and A.J. Sebastian; two sisters, Mary Ruth Beane and Maxine Lawing; and two brothers, Ralph Carter and Zeno Carter. COHNSTAEDT Martin Ludwig Cohnstaedt, November 2002, Prairie Monthly Meeting, Canada. Martin was born in 1917 and fled Germany when Hitler came to power in 1933. He became a Quaker in England and the U.S. Martin served as former Clerk of Prairie Monthly Meeting. He worked in the areas of academics and community-based work in agro-ecology and development. Martin was in the unique position of taking matters of principle to the Supreme Courts of the U.S. and Canada; in both cases the principles were upheld.DAVIS Donald Lester Davis, 69, January 6, 2005, White Plains Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Donald was born on January 8, 1935, to Nan Nichols and Lester Davis. He was the owner and operator of Bright Leaf Drive-In Theatre for 50 years and a member of White Plains Friends Meeting. Survivors include his wife, Billie Mae Harrell Davis; his mother, Nan Nichols Davis; his mother-in-law, Pearl Atkins Harrell; one brother-in-law and spouse, Dr. James F. and Marcia Childress; two nephews, Frank Childress and Fred Childress; one aunt, Daisy Nichols Simmons; and two cousins and a spouse, Lu Ann and Mike Loy and Stan Simmons. MYERS Onda Faye Myers, 81, June 26, 2004, Fountain City Friends Meeting, Indiana. Onda was born April 15, 1923 to Raymond and Jessie Reynolds Swain. She was a retired employee of the Northeastern School System and a secretary for Scott Milligan. She was a member of the Fountain City Friends Meeting, where she had been the Recording Clerk for many years and the pianist for 40 years. She served as president of the Fountain City Friends USFW and was very active sewing for their missions. She was a member of the Levi Coffin House Association where she had served on the Board of Directors since 1971. She volunteered there and received a plaque in 1990 for 1000 hours of service and by 2002 had volunteered a total of 2194 hours, and was made an Honorary Life Time Board Member. She was a former member and President of the Rodalla Home Extension Club. She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Calvin Myers; a twin brother, Wallace Swain; one sister, Martha Louise Niccum and one grandson, Jared Carson. Survivors include her husband, Allen Myers whom she married December 7, 1946; three sons Doug, Eric and Scott Myers; one brother, Louis Swain; ten grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. ROGERS Barbara Fisher Rogers 75, April 1, 2005, First Friends Meeting, Indianapolis, Indiana. Barbara was born September 21, 1929 to James K. and Thelma Irene (Hawkins) Fisher. She was a florist for Betterman’s Flowers and Ayres Tea Room, and a secretary for the Indiana Gas Company. She was a member of the First Friends Meeting of Indianapolis and a 1947 graduate of Sheridan High School. She married William “Bill” Rogers in 1976. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill and one sister, Trudy Christy. Survivors include one son, Helmut Schwarzin; two daughters, Sandi Tomer and Liz Copeland; one brother, Ken Fisher; one sister, Mary Allison; eight grandchildren; and six step-grandchildren. STEPHENSON Elton Lee “Junebug” Stephenson, 84, March 27, 2005, Corinth Friends Meeting, Virginia. He was born to John Henry and Clara Gay Stephenson and was married to Mary Turner Stephenson. He was Sunday School superintendent for 30 years and a trustee of Corinth Friends Meeting. Elton was a World War II Army Veteran. He then started a construction business, was secretary and treasurer of the Mutual Fire Insurance Company for 35 years, secretary and treasurer of B&B Hunt Club, on the building committee for the regional 4-H Center and a former member of the Ivor Ruritan Club. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Mary Turner Stephenson. Survivors include one daughter, Kay Stephenson; one niece, June Hammond; one nephew, Larry Stephenson. SWAIN Louis R. Swain, 91, February 11, 2005, Fountain City Friends Meeting, Indiana. Louis was born December 7, 1913 to Raymond and Jessie Reynolds Swain. He had been a farmer in the Fountain City community for over 40 years, a director at Farm Bureau Co-Op for 25 years and a Republican Party Precinct Committeeman for New Garden Township. He was an active member of the Fountain City Friends Meeting. He retired from farming and moved to Florida in 1985. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Opal R. Swain and two sisters, Onda Faye Myers and Martha Louise Niccum. Survivors include one daughter, Betty Jane Quinn; one son, Dr. Fred Swain; two grandsons, Chi Swain and Dr. Brian Swain; and four great-grandchildren, Glavin Swain, and Lily, Tucker and Bella Swain.
