BINFORD Richard T. Binford, 88, March 10, 2005, Christ Reformed, Hagerstown, MD. Born November 5, 1916, he was the second child of Raymond and Helen Binford. He was married to Christine Goesinger. He received a B.S. from Guilford College in biology and a B.S. in Library Science from University of North Carolina. He graduated from Duke University Medical School and began his medical career in Baltimore, MD, and then moved to Hagerstown where he set up his medical practice. Based on his Quaker faith, he chose to do alternate service during the Korean conflict, serving in public health care. He was a member of Christ’s Reformed Church, Maryland Medical Assn., American Medical Assn., and served on the board of directors of the Union Rescue Mission. He was preceded in death by one sister, Naomi Binford and one brother, Fred Binford. Survivors include his wife, Christine; two daughters, Lyn Baker and Eloise Marrs; two sons, Richard Binford and Mark Binford; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren..

CARTER Ralph M. Carter, 85, April 26, 2005, Mount Carmel Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Ralph was born July 30, 1919, to Willie F. and Nora Eva Williams Carter. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II. He was a member of Mount Carmel Friends Meeting for 70 years. Retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., he helped William Doub for 19 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Nora Jan Carter; one sister, Gladys Worrell; and three brothers, Carl, Harold and Ivery Carter. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Edith Marie Davis Carter; four daughters, Bonnie Brown, Abigail Williams, Wilda Lucas and Dena Todd; six grandchildren, Penny Hennings, Mickey Monroe Williams, Jill Crews, Jason Brown, Jan Vogts and Michael Todd; 10 great-grandchildren, Lauren and Lindsey Williams, Barrett and R. Parkley Hennings, Jacob and Samuel Crews, Isaac Carter Brown, Taran and Eily Vogts and Hannah Todd; and one brother, Alvis Carter. CECIL Daniel Joseph Cecil, 57, March 23, 2005, Wabash Friends Church, Indiana. Daniel was born December 11, 1947 to Homer G. and Hazel Cecil. He married Sharon Eckerley in 1974. He was a member of Wabash Friends Church and the FFA Alumni and worked as a farmer and at the Treaty Elevator. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Survivors include his wife, Sharon; his mother, Hazel Cecil; two daughters, Stephanie Lamb and Jennifer Cecil; and two sisters, Miriam Doetsch and Doris Hanaway.

DAVIS Farlowe Davis, 70, April 16, 2005, Marlboro Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Farlowe was born March 11, 1935 to David and Fay Farlow Davis. He married Peggy Johnson. He was a member of Marlboro Friends Meeting and worked as a farmer and for Moorman Manufacturing Co. He was a member of the New Market Civitan Club and a baseball coach in the community. He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy; his father, David and one brother, Jerry. Survivors include one daughter, Donna Jackson; one son, Michael F. Davis; his mother, Fay Davis Spell; one brother, James; one sister, Jane Mullins; and two grandchildren, Nathan Jackson and Micah Jackson.

DUNHAM Iris F. Dunham, 83, April 10, 2005, Providence Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Iris was a member of Providence Friends Meeting. She was preceded in death by her husband, Emmitt Louis Dunham. Survivors include two daughters, Sheila Breedlove and Kay Sink; one son, David Dunham; one sister, Joan Long; three brothers, Wallace Fields, Bill Fields and Carson Fields; three grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.

FARLOW Dennis E. Farlow, 77, May 1, 2005, Marlboro Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Dennis was born October 22, 1927, to Lewis and Blanche Farlow. He graduated from High Point College and received his Master’s Degree from UNCChapel Hill. He spent 38 years in the Randolph County Schools serving as teacher, principal and associate superintendent. After retiring in 1986, he served on the Randolph County Board of Education for eight years. Dennis joined the U. S. Air Force in 1950 and received a medical discharge in 1952, being 100% disabled because of polio. He was a member of Marlboro Friends Meeting. On October 9, 1951, he married Jewel Jones. Survivors include his wife, Jewel; two daughters, Kathy Walden and Lynn Osmann; two sons, Mark and David; four brothers, Noel, Max, Raphael and Lewis; four sisters, Bernice Lemons, Mary Wicker, Clara McPherson and Phyllis Bell; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. FUGLISTER Cecelia Bowerman Fuglister, 98, January 14, 2005, Falmouth Friends Meeting, Massachusetts. Cecelia was born on June 16, 1906 to Albert and Lois Henderson Bowerman. She married Frederick Fuglister in 1939. She was a member of West Falmouth Meeting, serving as meeting treasurer for a number of years. She was also involved in many summer programs and the continuing growth of the meeting. Cecelia graduated from Earlham College with a degree in Mathematics and later from Columbia University with a degree in Library Science. She served as Falmouth town librarian. She also played violin in the local Community Orchestra. Survivors include two sons, Frederick J. Fuglister and Charles Kurt Fuglister; one daughter, Elisabeth Stewart; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

HAMMER Nita M. Hammer, 95, March 25, 2005, Center Friends Church, Newton, Iowa. Nita was born December 26, 1909, the daughter of Edwin and Myrtle (Swearinger) Hammer. She was a life-long member of Center Friends Church where she had held many offices in the church and Missionary Society. She loved teaching the young Sunday School class. She enjoyed crocheting and quilting, and made many pieces for mission projects. Survivors include Richard (Dick) Machin; his wife, Darlene; two nieces, four great-nieces and great-nephews.

HENLEY Robert Henley Jr., 77, April 16, 2005, Hopewell Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Robert was born July 11, 1927, to Robert Newton and Mattie Luck Henley. He was an active member of Hopewell Friends Meeting and served with the Quaker Men. He retired from Negco as shipping clerk and had also worked at Hedgecock Building Supply Co. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Billy Ray Henley. Survivors include his wife, Gladys Marie Cagle Henley; two daughters, Roberta H. Cooper and Edna H. Connor; two sons, Rickey A. Henley and Ronald L. Henley; three grandsons; three granddaughters; one great-granddaughter; and three sisters, Irene Luck, Betty Dawkins and Marjorie Rush.

McVEY Rochelle R. McVey, 92, April 15, 2005, Cane Creek Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Rochelle was an active member of Cane Creek Friends where she was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the Joyful News Missionary Circle. She also was a member of Snow Camp Garden Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, B. Harris McVey; and one son, T. Forrest McVey. Survivors include one daughter, Marian Tillman; one son, Harris T. McVey; one brother, J.B. Roach; ten grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and five great-great- grandchildren.

MENDENHALL Elbert P. Mendenhall, 88, April 10, 2005, Jericho Friends Meeting, Indiana. Elbert was born on August 22, l916, to Guy and Mable Hunnicutt Mendenhall. He attended Jericho Friends Meeting, Indiana. He lived most of his life as a self-employed farmer in Economy, Indiana before retiring to Union City in 2000. He was also part owner of Economy Equipment and sales and was the owner of Dixon Lawnmower Sales and Service. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ivel and Harvey Mendenhall; three sisters, Lucille Wisener, Martha Overlin and Ermal Consolino. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Frances (Routh) Mendenhall; one daughter, Beverly Nunley; one granddaughter, Kathy Nunley-Grill; one grandson, Brad Nunley; four great-grandsons Korey and Samual Grill and Isaiah and Damion Nunley; five sisters, Aurie Taylor, Alice North, Dorothy Masters, Irene Masters and Doris Popielewski; and many nieces and nephews. Memorials may be sent to Jericho Friends Meeting.

MENDENHALL Herschel Lewis Mendenhall, 89, Pleasant Plain Friends Church, Iowa. Herschel was born May 6, 1915 in Hartford, CT to Lloyd Hadley and Bertha Louise (Hammond) Mendenhall. He first traveled to Iowa in a market basket when he was six weeks old; then traveled to Cuba for over four years while his parents were missionaries. He grew up in Earlham, Iowa and married Mildred Coffin in Pleasant Plain on November 27, 1941. He farmed with his father for three years, attended Otterbein College in Westerville, OH, and graduated from William Penn College in Oskaloosa in 1941 with Bachelor of Arts degrees in Accounting and Economics. He was the business office manager during his last two years at William Penn College. During World War II, he worked for the Civilian Public Service as a conscientious objector in a mental hospital in Williamsburg, Virginia, the Concord, New Hampshire State Hospital, the Public Health Service Unit of the State Sanitation Program in Orlando, Florida and the State Mental Hospital in Independence, Iowa. He pastored Woolson Friends Church and then Middle River Friends while again acting as a half-time Business Manager at William Penn College before moving to Pleasant Plain to farm with his wife’s parents. He farmed from 1949 until his retirement in 1993 except for three years when he worked as treasurer and bookkeeper for the Friends Africa Mission in Kaimosi, Kenya. He was a long time member of Pleasant Plain Friends Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred; his parents; his adopted son, Russell and one brother, Orville. Survivors include one brother, Charles Mendenhall; brother-in-law, Earl Coffin; nieces and nephews.

PORTER Jack Porter, 83, April 2, 2005, Wabash Friends Church, Indiana. Jack was born September 1, 1921 to William and Anna Porter. He married Naomi Hopkins in 1944. He was a member of Wabash Friends Church. He worked for Public Service Company until he formed and owned Courtesy Electric Service, which later became Wabash Electric Supply. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a member and past president of Wabash Lions Club, past vice-president of Wabash Area Chamber of Commerce, past president of Wabash Community Service, a member of the Wabash American Legion and Elks Club. He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters. Survivors include his wife, Naomi; two daughters, Renee Stouffer and Annette Brooks; two sons, Jon W. and Greg L.; three granddaughters, Heather Hunsberger, Melanie Brainard and Amanda Porter; and two great-grandsons, Luke and Ian Hunsberger.

SUMNER Julia Ann (Hinshaw) Sumner, 67, April 27, 2005 Friends Memorial Meeting, Muncie, Indiana. Julia was born on August 8, 1937, the daughter of Kenneth and Thelma (Macy) Hinshaw. She graduated from Ball State University in 1959 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing and worked as a Registered Nurse in the surgery department at Ball Memorial Hospital for 28 years; in recent years, she worked as a surgical nurse for Dr. Roberto Darroca. Julia had been a lifelong member of Friends Memorial Meeting and was clerk of Ministry and Oversight. She also volunteered at Minnetrista Cultural Center for several years. Survivors include her husband of 45 years, Walter Sumner; one sister, Bette Cline; one son, Steven Sumner; one daughter, Sharon Schamberg; and four grandchildren, Craig, Katelyn, Elizabeth and Michael. TABER William Pickett Taber Jr., 77, April 15, 2005, Stillwater Friends Meeting, Ohio. Bill was born October 29, 1927, to William Pickett and Sarah Negus Taber. He was a lifelong member and recorded minister at Stillwater Friends Meeting. He was a member of the Friends Historical Society. Along with wife, Fran, he was coordinator of the Friends Center of Ohio Yearly Meeting. He was a teacher and administrator at Olney Friends School and then taught at Pendle Hill. He also authored a history of Olney Friends School and one of Ohio Yearly Meeting. In addition to his parents, Taber was preceded in death by his sister, Helen Taber Williams. Survivors include his wife, Frances Irene Smith Taber; one sister, Mary A. Taber; one brother, Joseph J. Taber; two daughters, Anne Marie Taber and Debora Taber; five grandchildren, Jeremy, Timothy and Daniel Washburn, and Marisa and Julian Becerra.

WARDEN David Hugh Warden, 39, April 13, 2005, Deep Creek Friends Meeting, North Carolina. David was born January 11, 1966 to Hugh Bennett and Beulah C. Warden. He was a member of Deep Creek Friends Meeting. He was a 1986 graduate of Surry Community College and was employed by Ford Truck Center. He was preceded in death by his father, Hugh Bennett Warden. Survivors include his mother, Beulah C. Warden; one brother, Keith Warden; two sisters, Katherine W. Davis and Vivian Newman; several nephews and a niece.
