BAUGHMAN Bob Baughman, 87, April 17, 2005, New Burlington Friends Meeting, Xenia, Ohio. Survivors include his wife, Vivian; one son; one daughter and two grandsons. BOYER Lawrence A. Boyer Sr., 83, April 20, 2005, Wabash Friends Church, Indiana. Lawrence was born September 13, 1921, in Wabash, to Albert and Ethel (Fegfin) Boyer. He married Fern Elizabeth Zintsmaster on April 18, 1941. He retired from General Tire in Wabash after 34 years. After that he worked for Carter Chrysler, Plymouth & Dodge and Wabash Valley Chrysler. He was a member of Wabash Friends Church, past member of the New Holland Friends Church, and past member of the Wabash County Sheriffs Department Reserves. He was preceded in death by his wife, Fern who died July 28, 2004 and one great-granddaughter. Survivors include two sons, L. Arden Boyer and John Boyer; one daughter, Barbara N. Holthouse; one sister, Dorothy Stefanic; 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great greatgranddaughter. GILMORE Eva Sue Wright Gilmore, 63, May 21, 2005, Somerton Friends Meeting, Virginia. Eva Sue was a graduate of Guilford College and she lived in Cincinnati, Ohio, working for Meyer Tool Inc., before returning to her native Suffolk. She taught in Suffolk Public Schools until February of this year. She was a member of Somerton Friends Meeting and United Society of Friends Women. She was preceded in death by her father, William Frank Wright Sr. and one brother, William Frank Wright Jr. Survivors include her mother, Goldie Mae Harrell Wright; two daughters, Jessica Gilmore Bouras and Kathryn Wright Gilmore; a sister-in-law, Barbara Odom Wright; two nephews, Curtis Frank Wright and William Douglas Wright. HILL Hazel Madison Hill, 81, June 1, 2005, Battle Forest Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Hazel was a member of Battle Forest Friends Meeting where she was active in the church, USFW and a member of the Seekers Sunday School Class. She was dedicated to her family and was affectionately known as “Mrs. Hill” by the dozens of children she kept at her day care. She was preceded in death by one sister, Margaret Jessie, and three brothers, John W. Madison Jr., Paul Sykes Madison and James Holt Madison. Survivors include one daughter, Dacia Osborne and one son, James Michael Hill; sisters and brothers, Ruby Stone, Varina Reynolds, and David Bee Madison; seven grandchildren, Matthew, Paul, and Jennifer Osborne, Carolyn Austin and Chris and Travis Hill; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. HOLLISTER Katharine (Kay) Maxwell Hollister, 90, April 13, 2005, Yellow Spring Friends Meeting, Ohio. Born in Chicago on April 15, 1914, she was the daughter of Donald Heberd Maxwell and Virginia Senseney Maxwell. She received a B.A. from Antioch College and an M.A. in Education from Northwestern University. She taught elementary school in Winnetka, Ill., and the Antioch School in Yellow Springs. She and Barry Hollister married in 1941. Kay was a devoted mother who focused on raising her four children. An active member of the Yellow Spring Friends Meeting since the early 1940s, she had a passion for religious education. She served on the Friends GeneralConference Religious Education Committee for over 40 years, contributing to Sunday School curriculum development and teacher training. Though Yellow Springs was always home, she and Barry moved their family three times for Quaker service stints, to Geneva, Switzerland, to Philadelphia and to New York City. Continuing her mother’s activism in the women’s right-to-vote movement, Kay was a member of the local League of Women Voters for 60 years, serving three times as chapter president. When she and Barry moved to New York City, she spent nine years as the hostess of Quaker House while Barry directed the Quaker United Nations Office. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Barry. Survivors include two sons, Robert and Don; two daughters, Ginny and Joan; six grandchildren, Caitlin, Susannah, Emily and Rebecca Hollister, Brook and Heather Freeman; two brothers, George Maxwell and Donald Maxwell; and numerous nieces and nephews. MARLEY Eli Franklin Marley, 81, June 2, 2005, Centre Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Eli was born August 26, 1923, the son of Arthur Branson and Mary (Hanner) Marley. He was a US Army veteran of WWII where he served with the 161st Artillery Battalion. He had worked for E.F. Craven in Greensboro, NC as a diesel mechanic. Most recently he owned and operated Robertson Auto Parts Store in Daytona Beach, Florida. Survivors include his wife, Peggy (Kirkpatrick) Marley; two daughters Teresa Hollweg and Carolyn Parker; one son, Thomas Eli Marley; three grandsons, Thomas and Patrick Marley and Stanley Parker; one sister, Linda Marley Trogdon; and three brothers: Cafer, Branson and Guy Marley. MYERS Joanne Myers, 62, March 24, 2005, New Burlington Friends Meeting, Xenia, Ohio after serious heart surgery. Joanne was a miracle of God having not been expected to live beyond age 12. Survivors include her husband, Richard; two sons, Jack and JR Keller; and three grandchildren. NEWTON Doris Nelle Hodgin Newton, 79, June 26, 2005, Centre Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Doris Nelle was born in Guilford County on March 20, 1926, to W. Scott and Winnie Coble Hodgin. She was a member of Centre Friends Meeting. Survivors include her husband of 54 years, J.S. “Jim” Newton; two sons, James T. and Scott S. Newton; one daughter, Robyn N. Taylor; one brother, David L. Hodgin; and one sister-in-law, Martha Farlow Hodgin. PARKER George C. Parker, 93, May 28, 2005, Cedar Grove Friends Meeting, North Carolina. George was the son of William Edgar and Ruth Peele Parker. He lived an active retirement for the past 25 years, continuing his career as a businessman, while broadening his involvement in organizations such as North Carolina Friends Historical Society. He was a birthright member of the Society of Friends and maintained a lifelong membership at Cedar Grove Friends Meeting. He was recorded as a minister in Rich Square Monthly Meeting in 1968 and served both the monthly, quarterly and yearly meetings as clerk. After graduating in the inaugural class, 1929, of Woodland- Onley School, he attended Westtown School in Pennsylvania. He entered Guilford College where he graduated in 1935 with a science major, competing as a 3-sport athlete. In 1970 he was honored as a charter inductee in Guilford College Sports Hall of Fame and with his wife Elizabeth, received the 1969 Distinguished Alumni Award. His support for the college continued throughout his lifetime. He served his local community, county and region as a member of civic organizations including Woodland Community Club Lions Club, school board, the Northampton County Education Foundation and the regional mental health organization. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Edgar and Ruth Peele Parker; one brother, Jesse and two sisters, Mary Lettrell and Esther Wethington. Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Elizabeth Gilliam Parker; one daughter, Elizabeth P. Haskins; four sons, W. Conrad, Elwood G., G. Edgar and John G. Parker; one sister, Ruth E. Linville; one brother, James Parker; one sister-in-law, Ruth D. Parker; seven grandchildren, eight greatgrandchildren and many nieces and nephews. PUGH Harris Neece Pugh, 70, June 7, 2005, Asheboro Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Harris retired from Kayser-Roth Corporation. He was a member of Asheboro Friends Meeting, serving on different committees of the meeting. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Wallace and Donnie Pugh. Survivors include his wife, Mary Ella B. Pugh; one daughter, Loretta Mills; one granddaughter, Lauren Slusser; one sister, Phyllis Allen; and three brothers, Odell, Wade and Theodore B. Pugh. QUATE Charles Ray “Chuck” Quate Jr., June 11, 2005, Poplar Ridge Friends, North Carolina. Chuck’s career had been in sales with the most recent being in the mortgage broker industry. Survivors include his wife, Kathy Poole Quate; two sons, Charles Quate and Michael Quate; his father, Charles Quate Sr.; his and mother, Ruth Quate; and one brother, Randy Quate. TALLEY Martha Lavera Mickles Warden Talley, 74, May 7, 2005, Deep Creek Friends, North Carolina. Martha was born July 7, 1930, to Dallas Mickles and Viola Hutchens. She attended Harmony Grove Friends and was a member of Deep Creek Friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Foy Warden; and a baby brother, R.J. Mickles. Survivors include her husband of 14 years, Estil Talley; one son, Farrel Warden; one daughter, Crystal Cox; two brothers, Joy F. Mickles and Marvin Mickles; and one granddaughter, Cindy Warden. TREADWAY Allen Frank Treadway, 73, May 19, 2005, Yellow Springs Friends Meeting, Ohio. Allen was born November 30, 1931, in White Plains, N.Y., the first of Clay and Dorothea (Allen) Treadway’s four children. On June 15, 1954, at Coal Creek, Iowa, he married Carolyn Ardith Smith; last summer they celebrated their 50th anniversary at the Yellow Springs Friends Meeting, where they were members. Allen was a graduate of Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana. He was a conscientious objector and did two years of alternative service at Indianapolis General Hospital following college. His career was varied, including work as a printer, middle school math teacher, county social worker, municipal water and wastewater superintendent, nut butter production manager and driver for a family literacy program. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn; his siblings and their spouses, Ann Cook-Frantz and Alan Frantz, Ray and Carole, and Roy and Carolyn; five children, Daniel Treadway, Brian Treadway, Dorothy Matthews, Jennifer Peters, Michael Irving; and six grandchildren, Christina and Andrew Peters, and Stephen, Philip, Mary and Joseph Matthews. WASS Wilma M. Wass, 89, May 26, 2005, College Avenue Friends, Oskaloosa, Iowa. Wilma was born June 7, 1915, the daughter of William C. and Emma McKissick Hite. She was married to Alfred D. Mott, who died on March 15, 1955. From 1954 until 1959, she worked at the old Continental Overall Factory in Oskaloosa. On June 6, 1959, she was united in marriage to Henry Wass. She worked in the food service department at William Penn College for 38 years, retiring in 1998. In retirement, at the request of the students, she and Henry worked in the recreation room at the college until earlier this month (May). She was a member of the College Avenue Friends Church, and active in women’s groups at the church. She was a member of TOPS for over 30 years. Survivors include her husband, Henry Wass; one son Carroll Mott; two grandchildren; five great-grandsons; one brother, Lester Hite; and many nieces and nephews. WOOTEN Randy Allen Wooten, 44, June 15, 2005, Forbush Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Randy was born November 3, 1960, to Allen and Peggy Billings Wooten. He worked with Sonoco Corrflex, was a member of Forbush Friends Meeting and attended Richmond Hill Baptist Church. He was a member of Fall Creek Fire Department as a second lieutenant, and was a first responder with Fall Creek Fire Department. Survivors include his wife of 19 years, Toni Wooten; three children, Alicia Hutchins, Brody Wooten and Randi “Little Randi” Wooten; his parents, Allen and Peggy Wooten; one sister, Bonnie Brown; nephews and nieces Allen Brown, Devin Brown, Jada Brown and Jamie Brown; and his greatnephew, Spencer Brown. YORK Bobby Lee York, 76, June 14, 2005, White Plains Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Bobby Lee was born July 28, 1928, to Lenny McKinley and Jettie Mae Robertson York. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and retired from York Oil Co. He attended White Plains Friends Meeting. Survivors include four sons, Wayne, Robert, Billy, and Bobby Dean York; five grandchildren, Kim York, Chris York, Summer York and Amanda York, and Tyler York; four great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Tom, Jack and Russell York. WIMMER Helen M. Wimmer, 87, May 19, 2005, Bethel Friends Meeting, Jonesboro, Indiana. Helen was born March 11, 1918 to Cecil and Ethel (Williamson) Davis. She was married to Robert Wimmer for 66 years. Helen and “Wimmer” farmed together for many years. Helen was a devoted worker in God’s Kingdom. At Bethel Friends, she served as a Sunday School teacher, pianist, president of the USFW, representative to Indiana Yearly, Flower Committee, Music Committee and Evangelism and Outreach Committee. Helen was a member of the Indiana Yearly Meeting Ministry and Oversight Committee. She was a counselor at Quaker Haven youth camp for many years. She supported her community by being on the Roseburg Election Board for more than 30 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, in 2003; one sister, Dorothy Shinn; a great-grandson, Sam Nolder; and son-in-law Terry Pattison. Survivors include her twin daughters, Chloann Pattison and Joann King; five grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
