Deaths________BARTLE Ann Carey Bartle, 95, October 26, 2004, Knightstown Friends Church, Indiana. Ann was born July 27, 1909, to Vernon Carey and Harriet Pritchard Carey Esson. She was secretary to the superintendent of Knightstown Schools for 31 years, retiring in 1974. She was a member of Knightstown Friends Church, Tri Kappa Sorority and the Knightstown Historical Society. She married Chester D. Bartle on October 5, 1930 and he preceded her in death September 7, 1973. Survivors include two daughters, Sue (Tom) Lawrence and Sara (Bill) Lowe; one brother, Joseph Carey; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one niece and one nephew. CLARK Wayne Roscoe Clark, 91, February 20, 2005, Knightstown Friends Church, Indiana. Wayne was born January 31, 1914 to Joseph Roscoe and Laura (Twomey) Clark. He was a farmer and had worked at the Knightstown Elevator and at Mayhill Publications. On February 3, 1939, he married Mary (Stapp) Clark. He was a member of Knightstown Friends Church, the K. of P. Lodge, and was Democrat precinct committeeman in both Henry and Rush counties and held various positions in the party. In 1997, he received the Sagamore of the Wabash from Gov. Frank O’Bannon. He was preceded in deathby his wife, Mary on June 14, 2002; one brother, Terry Kern Clark and one sister, Reggie Fern Manning.Survivors include one son, Frank Clark; three daughters, Waynetta (Bob) Dunn, Diana (John) Love of and Pam Noble; one brother, Wendell (Maxine) Clark; two granddaughters, Melinda Wright and Kate Noble; two grandsons, Mick (Meagan) Wright and Nate (Amy) Noble; four great-grandchildren, Clark, Carson, Chloe and Cole; and several step-grandchildren. CUSTER Merle Edward Custer, 84, July 31, 2005, Wabash Friends Meeting, Indiana. Merle was born January 31, 1921, to Clarence and Edith (Niccum) Custer. He married Bettie Ann Pullen in Wabash on December 17, 1941. He was a member of the Wabash Friends Church and a former director of the Church World Service’s C.R.O.P. (Christian Relief Overseas Program).He was a farmer and served on Dan Quayle’s Agriculture Advisory Committee. He also was a longtime member of the Wabash County Pork Producers, the Indiana Cattleman Association and a longtime Wabash County 4-H leader. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bertie Ann, on March 9, 1999; and two brothers, Irvin Custer and John Custer. Survivors include three daughters, Melanie Weisman, Karen Custer-Thurston, and Lisa (Steve) McClure; two sons, Kim Custer and Lane (Anne) Custer; three granddaughters, Dawn (Dennis Davidson) Weisman, Rachel Thurston and Katy McClure; four grandsons, Brady McClure, Cody Mc-Clure, Coby Custer and Quin Custer; one great-granddaughter, Hannah Davidson; one great-grandson, Levi Davidson; one brother, Gene (Rosie) Custer; one sister, Frances (Raymond) Zink; and one sisterin-law, Bertha Custer Snavely. DAWES Thelma Isabell Dawes, 97, July 21, 2005, Wabash Friends Meeting, Indiana. Thelma was born November 18, 1907, to Earl and Myrtle (Bowman) Trowbridge. She married David Lloyd Dawes on April 5, 1946. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Huntington College and attended Hanover College. She was a teacher in the Wabash and Metropolitan school districts for 47 years. She had been a member of Wabash Friends Meeting since 1950, was a member of the United Society of Friends Women and a former Sunday school teacher with the Gold Band Class. She was a 50-year member of the Wabash Order of Eastern Star No. 90, and a member of the Woman’s Clubhouse Association, the Wabash Retired Teachers Association and the Indiana Retired Teachers Association. She was preceded in death by her husband, David, on November 13, 1976 and four step-daughters. Survivors include one granddaughter, Carolyn (Craig) Winegardner; one stepson, Edwin Dawes; eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and three greatgreat-grandchildren. FARLOW Isaac Raphael Farlow, 69, August 16, 2005, Marlboro Friends Meeting, North Carolina. He had been in declining health for over a year. Isaac was born September 30, 1935 to Lewis Lee and Blanche Ward Farlow. He was a dairy farmer and a member of Marlboro Friends Meeting, where he served on the cemetery committee and sang in the choir. He was a U.S. Army veteran and served as a M.P. for Dwight Eisenhower. He was a former member of the New Market Civitians. On May 4, 1960, he married Geraldine (Gerry) Andrews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Dennis E. Farlow. Survivors include his wife, Geraldine; three sons, Terry Farlow and wife Sharon, Paul Farlow and wife Maria and Dean Farlow and wife Amy; four sisters, Bernice Lemons, Mary Wicker, Clara McPherson and Phyllis Bell; three brothers, Noel Farlow, Max Farlow and Lewis Farlow; and seven grandchildren, Hannah, Seth, Maggie, Allison, Kyle, Isaac and Aldyn Farlow. HICKS Marjory Hicks, 85, April 9, 2005, New Salem, Greentown, Indiana. Majory was born January 3, 1920 to Lorel and Leota Tolle. She was a school teacher and taught Science, Physical Education and Home Economics in Huntington, Muncie and Albany, Indiana as well as Northmont School in Clayton, Ohio. Survivors include her husband, Emory; one son, James David ( Linda ) Hicks; one brother, Edgar Tolle; and one granddaughter, Kathryn Elizabeth Hicks. HOLLINGSWORTH Notre Reading Hollingsworth, 91, August 14, 2005, South Plainfield Friends Meeting, Sophia, North Carolina. She was a native of Randolph County, a member of South Plainfield Friends Meeting and was retired from Laughlin Hosiery Mill. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Hollingsworth; and two brothers, Robert and Fred Reading. Survivors include two daughters, Claudia Richardson and Sue Thomas; two grandsons, Mike Richardson and Marty Richardson; one granddaughter, Candie Smith; two great-granddaughters, Lindsey and Katheryn Richardson; two greatgrandsons, Wes and Nick Blackburn; and one sister, Nellie Harris. KEY Barley Chester Key, 81, July 12, 2005, Pine Hill Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Barley was born July 18, 1923, to Dock William Augusta and Molly Ada Reid Key. He was a member of Pine Hill Friends Meeting and was retired from ITT Grinnell and Pipe Co. and as a farmer. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Patricia Ann Key; his parents; one sister, Ruby Key; and two brothers, Fred and Hassell Key. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Mattie Sue Harbour Key; three daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and David Hayes, Kathy and Bill Branch and Cheryl Jordan; one son, Terry C. Greene; and two sisters-in-law, Jettie Key and Mary Key. MACON Mary Ruth Hinshaw Macon, 90, August 12, 2005, Holly Spring Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Mary was an active member of Holly Spring Friends Meeting and a homemaker who was an Avon Representative for 15 years. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Randy and Jennifer Macon and Lawrence and Pat Macon; one daughter and son-inlaw, Janice and Randy Cheek; and one grandson, Aaron Cheek. PARKER George Conrad Parker, 93, May 28, 2005, Cedar Grove Friends Meeting of Rich Square Monthly Meeting, Woodland, North Carolina. George was born February 2, 1912 to William Edgar and Ruth Peele Parker. He was a lifelong member and recorded minister in Rich Square Monthly Meeting. He attended Westtown School and was a 1935 graduate of Guilford College where he met his wife of 67 years, Elizabeth Gilliam. His active support and concern for his meeting and yearly meeting, Guilford College, North Carolina Friends Historical Society, other Friends organizations, Northampton County public education, community and regional civic organizations continued throughout his entire lifetime. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Jesse Parker; and two sisters, Mary P. Littrell and Esther P. Wethington. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth G. Parker; one daughter, Elizabeth P. Haskins; four sons, W. Conrad, Ehvood G., G. Edgar and John G. Parker; one sister, Ruth E. Linville; one brother, James Parker; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. PHILLIPS Esther Lowe Phillips, 81, July 2, 2005, Holly Spring Friends Meeting, North Carolina. A Randolph County native, she was a graduate of Guilford College and a retired public school teacher, serving the children of Ramseur and Coleridge Schools for many years. She also served as a pre-school educator and Sunday school teacher at First Assembly of Asheboro. In her efforts to help children, she was an avid fundraiser for World Vision. She was a member of Holly Spring Friends Meeting. Survivors include her husband, Samuel Phillips; two daughters and sons-in-law, Elizabeth and Frank Massey, and Anne and George Smoot; one sister-in-law, Lizzie Lowe; and three grandchildren, Ellen and Brian Massey and Sarah Smoot. WAYMIRE Donald Lee Waymire, 71, May 25, 2005, New Salem Friends, Greentown, Indiana. Donald was born February 10, 1934 in Muncie. He retired from Guide Lamp, He was a Red Coat volunteer at St. John’s Cancer Center. Survivors include his wife, Janice; six children, Kelly Waymire, Lori Wilson, Nancy McClure, Amanda Omstead, Russell Waymire and Everett Waymire; and 12 grandchildren. WETHINGTON Esther Parker Wethington, 82, May 28, 2005, Cedar Grove Friends Meeting of Rich Square Monthly Meeting, Woodland, North Carolina. Esther was born July 25, 1922 to William Edgar and Ruth Peele Parker. She was a lifelong member and an elder since 1998 in Rich Square Monthly Meeting. She was a graduate of East Carolina Teachers College and taught and coached in the public schools of North Carolina and Delaware. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 53 years, Ben C. Wethington; one sister, Mary P. Littrell; and one brother, Jesse Parker. Survivors include two sons, Ben Carl Wethington and Stephen Asa Wethington; two brothers, George C. Parker and James Parker; one sister, Ruth E. Linville; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. WINSLOW Thomas Claude Winslow, 94, August 13, 2005, Piney Woods Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Thomas was born to Thomas R. and Nora Layden Winslow. A retired farmer, he had attended Kee Business College and was a member of Piney Woods Friends Meeting. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Donald Winslow; one sister, Norma Bunch; and three brothers, Gordon, Oliver and George Winslow. Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Virginia Chappell Winslow; one daughter, Avis Layden and husband James Oliver; one son, Preston Winslow and wife Becky; two sisters, Mary Elizabeth Hendrix and Eva Wrae Landing; one brother, Bill Winslow; seven grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and nine great- great-grandchildren. WOOTEN John Thomas “Tommy” Wooten, 53, July 12, 2005, Branon Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Tommy was born August 14, 1951, to John Winfield and Lillian Hobson Wooten. He was a member of Branon Friends Meeting. He was preceded in death by his father, Winfield Wooten. Survivors include his mother, Lillian Hobson Wooten. YORK Bertie Dunn York, 98, August 7, 2005, Archdale Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Bertie was born July 3, 1907 to William Aulsey Dunn and Carrie Elizabeth Staley Dunn. She attended Guilford College where she received a teaching certificate and later taught school in Archdale. For many years, she was Office Manager at Ritch Face Veneer Company in High Point. She was a longtime member of Archdale Friends Meeting where she held many positions in the church and was a member of the Elizabeth Frye Sunday School Class. Other memberships include: the Sunset Garden Club in High Point, the High Point Pilot Club and High Point Regional Hospital Guild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Shelley C. York, in 1961. Survivors include two sons, W. Thomas York and wife, Tricia and Dr. Shelley C. York Jr. and wife, Betsy; five grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
