Deaths

COPELAND Hazel Pond Copeland, 92, November 25, 2005, Somerton Friends Meeting, Virginia. Born in Southampton County, she attended Corinth Friends Meeting. She was the daughter of Walter Norfleet and Minnie Lee Raiford Pond. She was preceded in death by one half-sister, Nettie Marable; one former husband, Jesse A. Harrell and two husbands, Aylon D. Horton and C.C. “Jack” Copeland. She retired as a floor lady from Planters Peanut with 33 years of service. She was a member of Somerton Friends Meeting. Survivors include one daughter, Mary Alice Harrell Grand; one son and Fred A. (Ann) Harrell; step-daughter, Mary Ellen Copeland; one stepson James C. (Georgie) Copeland; nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, two greatgreat grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.

BUCKNER Gertrude Johnson Buckner, 92, December 18, 2005, Plainfield Friends Meeting, North Carolina. A native of Chatham County, Gertrude was a member of Plainfield Friends Meeting and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Tull H. Buckner and two sons-in-law, Billy Corder and Wayne Cockman. Survivors include six daughters, Cora (Jack) Elkins, Doris (Jimmie) Hart, Louise (Archie) Adcock, Patsy Corder, Bronna Cockman and Susan Coggins; two sons, Ronnie (Nannette) Buckner and Mitchell (Pat) Buckner; two sisters, Runa M. May and Alma L. Bowman; 12 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; three step-grandsons and three step-great-grandsons. CARTER Herman T Carter, 84, December 22, 2005, Russiaville Friends Church, Indiana. Herman was born June 14, 1921, the fourth child of Walter E. and Arlie B. (Ticen) Carter. On July 18, 1948, he married Alice I. (Fennell) Carter. He was a birthright and active member of Russiaville Friends Church, where he served in several leadership roles. His steady and affirming presence there will be missed by all. A lifelong resident of Russiaville, IN¸ he was a dairy, grain and beef farmer all his life, continuously residing in the home of his birth. Herman served in the Army Medical Corps from 1941 to 1945 in Hawaii and Guam. His witness in the community was given as a school bus driver for 17 years, a longtime board member of the Western School Corp., and a member of the Honey Creek Twp. Trustee Advisory Board. He was preceded in death by four siblings Robert Carter, Mildred Shepherd, Lee Carter, and Orville Carter. Survivors include his wife, Alice; five children, Judy Deahl, Dave, Stan, Duane and Roger Carter; 13 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, three brothers, Lester (Anna) Carter, Wayne (Kay) Carter, and Roy (Karlene) Carter, and two sisters-in-law, Rosemary Carter, and Joanne Carter.

HINSHAW Mary Edith Woody Hinshaw, 92, December 27, 2005, Holly Spring Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Mary Edith was born on July 29, 1913, in Wilmington, Ohio, to J. Waldo and Eva Edith Terrell Woody. She graduated from Guilford College in 1935. In 1937, she married Rev. Seth B. Hinshaw and worked with him as a devoted minister’s wife at Friends meetings in North Carolina and while he was Executive Secretary of North Carolina Yearly Meeting of Friends. She was also Seth’s co-author, illustrator and editor of numerous books and pamphlets for the N.C. Friends Historical Society and Publications Board, and authored her own book, Pioneers In Quaker Education. In l988, Mary Edith was nominated for the North Carolina Distinguished Women’s Award. Many of her 484 oil paintings grace Friends Homes and private homes and churches around the state. She was preceded in death by her husband, Seth. Survivors include her children, Dr. Howard T. (Virginia ) Hinshaw, Dr. Waldo S. (Susan Kopiwoda) Hinshaw and Helen H. (Philip) Shore; seven grandchildren, Beth Hinshaw, Karin Hinshaw, Jennifer H. Adair, Stephen Hinshaw, Victoria Hinshaw, Seth Shore, and Anna Shore and three great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Seth and Mary Edith Hinshaw Educational Fund, Guilford College, 5800 W. Friendly Avenue, Greensboro, N.C. 27410.

KINDEL Dorothy Bond Kindel, 93, December 15, 2005. She was born in Plainfield, Indiana but was raised in Kenya, East Africa, where her parents, A.A. and Mira Bond were Friends missionaries. Dorothy received an A.B. degree from Earlham and her R.N. from Stanford University. She returned to Kenya where she served many years. Upon returning to the States, she worked at Hope Haven Children’s Hospital in Jacksonville, FL. In 1960, she married Ersal Kindel of Berea, Kentucky and assumed the responsibility of a new life with four children. In 1965, the family returned to Kenya for one year but actually stayed for 13 years. In Kenya, Dorothy served as an administrator of Kaimosi Friends Mission Hospital which her father had established. A Registered Nurse skilled in several tribal languages, she was director and teacher of the nurses training school. When the Kindels retired from the mission field in 1976, they lived in Danville, Indiana and then Berea, Kentucky. Dorothy maintained the business side of Ersal’s Ship Shape Sharp Shop and wood-turning enterprises. Recently, Dorothy and Ersal lived in St. Andrews Retirement Community in Richmond. She was a gifted writer and had several stories published even as a young girl. She also sang in the church choir, was active with Woman’s Industrial and helped start the Dialogue Center at Union church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ersal. Survivors include one son, Merlin (Dot) Kindel; three daughters, Marilyn (Jim) Powell, Arlene (Peter) Baker, and Garnet (Chad) Chrisman; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

LONG Karla Dean Wooten Long, 51, December 9, 2005, Forbush Friends Church, North Carolina. Karla was born in Forsyth County on June 10, 1954, to Virgil Aldene Wooten and Betty Lou Williams Wooten. She worked for Jostens in Winston-Salem and was a member of Forbush Friends Church. Survivors include her husband, John Long; one son, Jason Wesley (Lynn) Long; one daughter, Krista Long (Jeremy) Willard; her father, Virgil Aldene Wooten; two brothers, Randall William (Colleen) Wooten and David Leo (Karen) Wooten; one sister, Gina Wooten (Freddy) Hutchens; and three grandchildren, Weston Hugh Willard, Joshua Hunter Long and Alexandria “Allie” Justine Long.

OVERMAN Rezz Cleveland “R.C.” Overman, Jr., 92, January 1, 2006, Rocky River Friends Meeting, North Carolina. R.C. was born on October 7, 1913, in Randolph County, NC, to Rezz Cleveland and Sallie Kivett Overman. A member of Rocky River Friends Meeting, he loved and supported his church. R.C. was employed for a year with the Civilian Conservation Corps in Tennessee at age 19 and several years for Barnwell Brothers Trucking. He worked in the Panama Canal Zone during World War II as a crane operator for five years with his wife, Cleta Mae Stout Sellers. He also had been employed as a driver for R. C. Milliken Sausage Company and developed his own trucking company, R. C. Overman Trucking which hauled pre-cast concrete beams for Arnold Stone Company. R.C. raised and showed award winning Paint Horses on his R. C. Overman Road farm in northern Chatham County. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 35 years, Cleta Mae Stout Sellers; two brothers, Archie and O’Kelly; one sister, Bessie; one daughter, Jean O. Kellerman and one sonin- law, Frank Bowman. Survivors include his wife, Velma C. Overman; one daughter, Joyce O. Bowman; one son-in-law, Richard “Jay” Kellerman; two step-children, Carolyn Craven Brooks and Lee Craven; five grandchildren, Keith, Terry, Jan and Mike Bowman, and Cynthia Bowman Goodin; nine great grandchildren; and one niece, Dottie Kidd.

SPILLMAN Mary Ruth Lineberry Spillman, 74, January 9, 2006, East Bend Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Mary was born in Yadkin County on February 19, 1931, to John R. and Viola Davis Lineberry. She was a member of East Bend Friends Meeting. She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Rodney Lee Spillman; three grandchildren, Andrew Spillman and twins Matthew and Mark Spillman; two brothers, Hoover Lineberry and Paul Lineberry; and one sister, Freddie Dinkins. Survivors include her husband, William S. Spillman; three sons, Dennis (Marsha) Spillman, Dana (Kathy) Spillman and Kim (Sylvia) Spillman; two daughters, Wanda (Larry) Johnson and Mary Jane (Lee) Swaim; one sister, Katie (Flay) Renegar; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

STOUT Grace Elizabeth Pickett “Lib” Stout, 86, January 7, 2006, Rocky River Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Grace was born July 30, 1919, the daughter of William Russell and Minnie Alva (Garrett) Pickett. She was a dedicated member of Rocky River Friends Meeting where she served as pianist for a number of years. She accompanied her husband, Edgar, during his Conscientious Objector Service during World War II at the Eastern State (Mental) Hospital near Williamsburg, Virginia. A native of Randolph County, she was retired from Hardin’s Florist and the hard work of a dairy wife. She was preceded in death by her husband, M. Edgar Stout, Sr. and one son, Maurice E. Stout, Jr. Survivors include one daughter, Jane Carol Stout; one sister, Dorothy May; three grandchildren, Daniel (Jennifer) Stout, Jennifer Stout and Amy Stout; and former daughter-in-law, Rebecca Langley. WOOD Florence Wood, 95, December 5, 2005, Bethel Friends Monthly Meeting, Indiana. Florence was born January 29, 1910 to A. B. and Etta (Kirkpatrick) Brewer. She graduated from Fairmount High School in 1927 and received teaching degrees at Purdue and Ball State Universities. She married Milburn Wood on November 29, 1934. Florence taught Home Economics at Fairmount and Madison-Grant High Schools for 19 years. She was a member of Bethel Friends where she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She also belonged to Fairmount OES, Indiana Teachers Association and the RCA Sympathy Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Milburn Wood, on January 18, 1978. Survivors include two daughters, Donna (Mike) Robison and Sue (Tom) Johnson; one son, James (Patti) Wood; one sister, Marie Kempher; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
