Marriage Aaron Scott Makin and Jennifer Jam Pressley, July 22, 2006, Wabash Friends Church, Indiana. Deaths BARRETT Madge D. (Darby) Barrett, 90, July 17, 2006, Winchester Friends Church, Indiana. Madge was born June 19, 1916 to Loren and Eva Taylor Darby. She married Claude Barrett on February 22, 1936. She was a member of Winchester Friends Church. She retired from the Randolph County Bank in 1978. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, two sisters, her husband and son. Survivors include three daughters, ten grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. BARRETT Patricia C. Barrett 79, July 25, 2006, New Salem Meeting, Indiana. Patricia was born October 22, 1926, to Berton and Ruby Smisor. She worked for St. John’s Home Health. Care. She and her husband of 60 years, the Rev. Louis E. Barrett, served Friends in Indiana Yearly Meeting, Kansas Yearly Meeting, Jamaica Yearly Meeting and Western Yearly Meeting since 1955. Survivors include her husband, Louis E. Barrett; four children, Louis E, (Lois) Barrett, Carolyn (Malcolm) Reger, Norman (Jo Ellen) Barrett and David (Susan) Barrett; 11 grandchildren; one sister, Bonnie (Dexter) Bedwell and one brother, the Rev. Harold (June) Smisor. BEAL Margaret Alice Sampson Beal, 87, September 24, 2006, New Garden Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Margaret was born January 16, 1919, the first child of Edwin James and Rosa Mary Forstner Sampson. On May 21, 1949, she married Franklin Dauphinee Beal, who predeceased her in 1987. She was a lifelong member of New Garden Friends Meeting, taught Sunday School, and was leader and member of the Annie E. Williams Circle USFW. In 1991, she received the Eliza Armstrong Cox Fellowship. She was a Girl Scout leader, and was a volunteer docent at the Friends Historical Collection at Guilford College and retired as a Docent Emerita. Survivors include one daughter, Margaret Gertrude Beal; one brother, Joseph E. Sampson; two sisters, Violet Sampson Keener and Dorothy Sampson Fields; and numerous nieces and nephews. BROWN Michael Moore Brown, 64, July 30, 2006 in Bozeman, Montana. He was born February 22, 1942 in Oakland, California to Gary T. and Helen (Johnson) Brown. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science from the University of California in 1965. In 1969, he received a Master of Science Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling from California State University; and in 1980, he received a Master of Divinity Degree from Earlham School of Religion in Richmond, Indiana. He also served in the Naval Air Reserve from 1960 to 1967. He married Barbara Ann Churchill on September 9, 1962. He was recorded as a minister by the Society of Friends in 1982 and served Friends in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, and Kingston, Jamaica before retiring to Bozeman, Montana. He was a member of the Bozeman United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his mother, Helen (Johnson) Brown. Survivors include his wife, Barbara; his father and step-mother, Gary (Elvira) Brown; one daughter, Megan (Jim) Dugan; and one son, Douglas Brown; and three sisters, Kitty Herod; Lois (Ernie) Moore; and Nancy Woodward. A memorial service was held by Ft. Wayne Friends on September 30, 2006. CROUSE Virginia Russell Crouse, 88, September 24, 2006, Glenwood Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Born in Virginia July 1, 1918, she was a member of Glenwood Friends Meeting. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Dalton Crouse and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Russell. Survivors include one daughter, Barbara (Ray) Crouse Cummings; one son, Gary D. (Mary) Crouse; two sisters, Edna R. “Pat” Williams and Dorothy R. Watts; one brother, Charles W. Russell; five grandchildren, Laura Lewis, Lisa Boone, Jeff Cummings, Michelle Crouse and Amy Crouse; and four great-grandchildren, Carter Boone, Hannah Lewis, Sydney Boone, and Pacey Cummings. DAVIS Louise Davis, April 1, 2006, Bangor Liberty Friends Meeting, Iowa. On March 9, 1941, she married Randall Davis at the Bangor Friends Church and they farmed in the area. She was a member of Bangor Liberty Friends Meeting and was consistently an important participant in all activities of the church. As a Sunday School teacher and a Friends Beliefs Class teacher, Louise taught Christian lessons to many high school age young people. She also served on most church committees, including clerk of Ministry and Counsel and was active in USFW. Louise was a leader in Iowa Yearly Meeting, serving on Yearly Meeting Ministry and Counsel (presiding clerk 1983-1987) and the Board of Coordination (1983-1993.) In 1984 she was an Iowa Yearly Meeting representative to FUM Triennial session and also Iowa Yearly representative to the FUM General Board from 1987-1994. Louise became the first woman presiding clerk of the Iowa Yearly Meeting of Friends. Louise and Randall were the parents of two children, Darrel and Marcia. FIELDS Evelyn W. (Wolfe) Fields, 97, July 17, 2006, Winchester Friends Church, Indiana. Evelyn was born on September 8, 1908 to Claude and Zella (Carter) Wolfe. She married Wayne H. Fields on September 4, 1932. She was an active 77-year member of Winchester Friends Church, Winchester, Indiana. Evelyn worked at the Randolph County Recorder’s Office, Eastern Indiana Telephone Co. and 50 years at the Randolph County Bank and served on the Winchester Chamber of Commerce. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a sister. Survivors include two nieces, one nephew, seven great nieces and nephews and five great-great nieces and nephews. GARRISON Ric D. Garrison, 42, August 2, 2006, Chester Friends Church, Iowa. Ric was born August 22, 1963, to Clifford and Patricia (Parker) Garrison. Ric attended Barclay College. On July 10, 1982, Ric was united in marriage to Linda K. Elliott in Haviland, KS. He served in ministry in Friends Churches in League City, TX, Oklahoma City, OK, Hugoton, KS, and Cherokee, OK, before being named to the staff of Iowa Yearly Meeting of Friends in Oskaloosa, IA. After a year as Director of Youth and Christian Education, he became Associate Superintendent of Youth and Camping Ministries, and was director of Camp Quaker Heights of Eldora, IA since 1996. He was a member of Chester Friends Church in Union, IA. While Ric served as Associate Superintendent, the Camp built twelve new cabins, Tall Oaks year round retreat center, added an above ground pool, basketball court, office building and numerous other improvements to grounds and buildings. Ric also established a summer intern program that inspired young people to consider full time ministry as their vocation. He was preceded in death by his father, Clifford Garrison; and one brother, Lonnie Garrison. Survivors include his wife, Linda; three children; Meredith, Patric, and Isaac; his mother Pat (Sam) Jones; two sisters Kathy Eidenberg and Debbie (Dave) Carter; his grandmother, Margit Parker; and one stepbrother Sam (Andrea Frohning) Jones. GRIFFIN Daniel L. Griffin, 73, August 18, 2006, Noblesville First Friends Church, Indiana. Daniel was born July 13, 1933, to Andrew and Marguerite (Mills) Griffin. He retired in 1997 as a custodian and bus driver for Carmel- Clay Schools. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. Daniel was a member of the Noblesville First Friends Church and served several terms as a trustee. Survivors include two daughters Robin Griffin and Beth (Greg) Alden; one son, David (Suzanne) Griffin; one brother, Ronald (Edie) Griffin; and two grandchildren, Abigail and Anthony Griffin. KREBS Mabel Shackelford Ebaugh Krebs, 99, April 9, 2006, Second Friends Meeting, Indiana. Mabel was born September 8, 1906 to Anna Katherine Fox Shackelford and William John Charles Shackelford. She was a past president of United Society of Friends Women, an Eliza Cox recipient, enjoyed attending USFW triennial conferences and was a past president of the Ladies Auxiliary of WWI. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Wimmial Ebaugh and George Krebs; three brothers, Esco, John and Charles Shackelford; and one son, Robert William Ebaugh. Survivors include one granddaughter Katherine Ann Ebaugh (Mark) Tomlinson; two great-granddaughters, Danielle and Allison Tomlinson; and nieces and nephews. LOWE Samuel (Sam) Allen Lowe Jr., 83, August 5, 2006, Back Creek Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Sam was a Navy veteran of WWII. He was a self-employed homebuilder and farmer. He was active at Back Creek Friends, where he was involved in the Good Neighbor Fund and was a choir member. Survivors include his wife, Inez Davidson Lowe; two sons, John A. Lowe and James D. Lowe; one daughter, Sue Ellen Lowe; and four grandchildren. OTWELL Edna Hackett Otwell, 89, September 21, 2006, Centre Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Edna was born on August 12, 1917, to John and Clara Kate Fields Hackett. She retired as a seamstress with Monnett Carpet, was a member of Centre Friends Meeting and a member of the Hackney Bible Class. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Bascom Lee Otwell; four sisters, Mabel Holder, Ruby Marley, Mildred Beeson, Madge Dunham and one brother, Jack Hackett. Survivors include three daughters, Carolyn (Marcus) Allen, Mary Lou (Howard) Craven, Edna Lee (Harold) Gibson; two sisters, Mary Mabe and Barbara Jean (Foy) McClintock; one brother, Joseph Glenn Hackett; six grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren and one step-great grandchild. SMALLEY Linda Elaine Farlow Smalley, 53, September 6, 2006, Marlboro Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Linda was born January 8, 1953, the daughter of McLain and Vadalia Farlow. She married Matthew Smalley on November 16, 1991. She was a member of Marlboro Friends Meeting. She was preceded in death by her mother, an infant son, and her brother-in-law, Mike Hilliard. Survivors include her husband, Matthew Smalley; three daughters, Anna (Timothy) Buti, Autumn Skalany and Brooke (Chris) Johnston; three grandchildren, Dominick, Deona and Devin Buti; her father, McLain Farlow; three sisters, Elizabeth Ann (Larry) Rich, Amelia (Keith) Davis and Beverly Hilliard. SHOAF Catherine (Gipe) Shoaf, 93, September 10, 2006, Noblesville First Friends Church, Indiana. Catherine was born April 17,1913, the daughter of George M. and Maude (Gardner) Gipe. She was a homemaker and a member of First Friends Church in Noblesville. She was also a member of Eastern Star, Senior Citizens Organization, Extension Homemakers and Hamilton County Craft Club. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Albert Shoaf in 1997. Survivors include one sister-in-law, Hazel Shoaf; a nephew, William A.(Georgia) Shoaf; and one niece, Cynthia Ann (Phil) Stage. SMART Elma Walthall Smart, 92, October 4, 2005, Hopewell Friends Church, Quaker, Indiana. Elma was born January 6, 1913, to Allen J. and Bessie May Haworth Walthall. She married Howard I. Smart on December 12, 1942 in Georgetown, Illinois. Elma was a member of Hopewell Friends Church, a life-long Sunday school teacher and took great love in bringing Jesus to the children of Hopewell Friends Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard in 1989; one son, Charles Howard Smart, three brothers and three sisters. Survivors include two daughters, Lynn (Richard) Bean and Helen Louise (John) Hershberger, a sister-in-law, Mary Walthall, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. SMITH Frances Kirkman Smith, 91, September 16, 2006, Deep River Friends Meeting, North Carolina. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hoyt Lee Smith; two sisters, Sarah Kirkman and Laura Mae Isley; and two brothers, Delbert Kirkman and Dennis Kirkman. Survived include four children, Wayne (Linda) Smith, Lillias (Marion) Crews, Ernest Smith and Bernard (Carole) Smith; three sisters, Margaret Coltrane, Kathleen Morgan and Betty Jane Hinshaw; one brother, Allen Kirkman; nine grandchildren and 21 greatgrandchildren. WELLONS Esther Annie Lindley Wellons, 95, September 14, 2006, Bethel Friends Meeting, Virginia. Esther was born January 13, 1911, to Annie McPherson Lindley and Albert Newsome Lindley. Graduating from Guilford College in 1931, Mrs. Wellons, an English teacher, worked with children in the inner city of Philadelphia, taught at Eli Whitney High School in southern Alamance County, North Carolina and following her marriage, continued to teach in the Cumberland Homesteads, Crossville, Tenn. From 1938 to 1947, she served, with her husband, as a missionary for the Religious Society of Friends in Jamaica. Moving to Victoria in 1950, she resumed her teaching career at Victoria and Lunenburg Central High Schools for 23 years. She was active in her community as a Cub Scout Den Mother and a member of library, garden club, senior citizens and retired teachers organizations. A lifelong Quaker and a member of Bethel Friends Meeting, she regularly attended Victoria Baptist Church and was active in the Women’s Missionary Union. In continuing her commitments to missions, she sewed over 2,000 garments for distribution to Third World countries. She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Harry Alvah Wellons; two sisters, Margaret Lindley Brafford and Eunice Lindley Beason; and one brother, James Grey Lindley. Survivors include two daughters, Martha Wellons Dentiste and Nancy Esther Wellons; two sons, Dr. Harry Albert Wellons, Jr. and Judge William Lindley Wellons; one sister, Sarah Lindley Stroup;16 grandchildren, and 27 great-grandchildren. WHITEHEAD Morris Richard Whitehead, 75, May 15, 2006, Honey Creek-New Providence Friends Church, Iowa. Richard was born September 16, to Kermit and Mary Morris Whitehead. He earned degrees at Ellsworth Community College, Baylor University and a Master’s degree at Iowa State Teachers College (now The University of Northern Iowa). He received an honorary Doctorate degree from Ellsworth College in 1996. He was married to his wife, Jane Browning, for nearly 51 years. In 1964 he was named the Executive Director of Quakerdale Children’s Home, retiring in 1990. He then spent two years with Lutheran Social Services establishing a home for children in Hawarden, IA, sold cars for Bisson Chevrolet in Eldora, served as a supervisor for Hardin County and mayor of New Providence. Dedicated to education, young people, community, and church, he served on a number of boards including Iowa Valley Community College District and Ellsworth College Trustees, Family Connection Board in Indiana and Kentucky, Presiding Clerk of Honey Creek-New Providence Friends Church, Iowa Yearly Meeting of Friends and Friends United Meeting, church choir director and Sunday school teacher; Hardin County Development Commission and Eldora Area Health Services. He was preceded in death by his father in 1994 and his mother in 2002. Survivors include his wife, Jane; one son, Daniel (Tracey) Whitehead; one daughter, Nancy (Kent) Schomack; five grandchildren, Jacob, Nicholas, and Lydia Whitehead and Benjamin and Zachary Schomack; two sisters, Mary Louise (Tony) Lansbarkis and Joanne Snyder; one brother-in-law, Jon (Jan) Browning; an aunt, Norma Hadley; an uncle, Dean Morris; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. WOLFE Clifford Joseph Wolfe, 86, August 24, 2006, University Friends Church, Wichita, Kansas. Clifford was born January 7, 1920 to Andrew Frederick Wolfe and Helen Whitacre Wolfe in Pleasant Plain, Iowa. He served in three Civilian Public Services camps, designed for conscientious objectors to war during WWII, in Oregon, Iowa and New Jersey. He earned a bachelor’s in divinity from Augustana Lutheran Seminary and doctoral work at the University of Iowa School of Religion. He was recorded as a Friends Minister by Iowa Yearly Meeting in 1948 and served as a Friends minister for 55 years with Muscatine Friends Meeting in Bloomington, IA, West Branch, IA, Georgetown, IL., Wabash, IN, Pleasant Grove, IL., Fountain City, IN., Sugar Plains, IN. and Rocky River, NC. In 1985 he moved to Hominy, Okla., where he and his wife, Marjorie, served Hominy Friends Meeting among the Osage Indians. He retired in 1990 from full-time ministry and moved to Wichita where they were active in University Friends Meeting. Visitation ministry was his special gift and he carried this out faithfully until he was 85; serving on the visitation committee and visiting the “older members” at University Friends in Wichita until he could no longer drive his car. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Hadley Wolfe and one daughter-in-law, Barbara Somers Wolfe, both of whom died in 1999. Survivors include two sons, David (Linda Kusse-Wolfe) Wolfe and Dr. Brian Wolfe; six grandchildren; and one brother-in-law, Harold (Wilda) Hadley.
