Deaths BARKER David Luther Barker, Jr., 81, October 3, 2006, High Point Friends Meeting, North Carolina. David was born May 3, 1925, a son of David Luther Barker and Vera Farlow Barker. He was a birthright member of High Point Friends Meeting and a commercial photographer for 60 years. He was a member of the Civil Air Patrol and an active ham radio operator. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn C. Barker; a daughter, JoAnn B. Graham; a son, Ronald (Jenny) R. Barker; three grandsons and two granddaughters. BROCK Elmer Manning Brock, Jr., 59, November 26, 2006, Archdale Friends Meeting, North Carolina, following an 18-month battle with cancer. Elmer was born on July 30, 1947, a son of Elmer Manning Brock, Sr. and Eva Teal Brock. He worked for the United Postal Service, retiring as Assistant Postmaster in 2003, after almost 38 years service. On August 27, 1966, he married Diane Frazier. He was a member of Archdale Friends Meeting and active in the Archdale Friends Quaker Men where he served as treasurer. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister, Barbara Jefferson. Survivors include his wife, Diane; two sons, Robert Manning (Lisa) Brock and Dr. William Daniel Brock; two grandsons, Nicholas Brock and Christopher Brock; two sisters, Carrie (David) Sparks and Mickie Burton; and several nieces and nephews. BUCKLIN Louis L. Bucklin, Jr., 50, August 9, 2006, Bloomington Friends Meeting, Indiana, after a brief illness with leukemia. Born October 20, 1955, he was the son of Louis L. and Mary (Lusco) Bucklin. He was a member of the Society of Friends (Quakers) and worked for Campus Division and the Department of Geological Sciences at Indiana University. Survivors include his wife, Linda Bruce Bucklin; their children, Sean and Meara Bucklin; one brother, Paul Bucklin; three sisters, Kathleen Bucklin, Mary Ann Bucklin and Barbara Nagle; and twelve nieces and nephews BULLA Shirley Marie Pugh Bulla, 79, October 9, 2006, Glenwood Friends Meeting, North Carolina. She was a member of Glenwood Friends Meeting and was employed with Davis Insurance Agency as an administrative assistant. Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Benjamin “Ben” Bulla; three daughters, Martha Bulla (Roland) Stone, Brenda Bulla (Don) Johnson and Susan Bulla; four grandchildren, Bo (Denise) Johnson, Kelly (Daniel) Farmer, Dennis Stone and Curtis Stone; one great grandson, Colin Johnson; and two sisters, Joanne Ward and Linda Haskins. EDGERTON Ethel Marie Copeland Edgerton, 94, October 1, 2006, Holly Spring Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Ethel was born May 21, 1912, to J. Thomas Copeland and Mary Wilbur Hazard. She grew up in the Friendsville community near Ramseur, NC and there married her husband of 69 years, Virgil W. Edgerton, who preceded her in death. Ethel was a dedicated homemaker and a lifelong Quaker. Survivors include two daughters, Carole (Ray) Treadway and Joyce (Bill) Scholl; one granddaughter, Annemarie Brian) Dloniak; one nephew, Harold LaVonne) Edgerton; and one niece, Rita (Kenneth) Schoeni. HADLEY Ruthanna D. (Davis) Hadley, October 18, 2006, Germantown Friends Meeting, Pennsylvania. Ruthanna was born into a missionary family and lived in Cuba until the age of nine. Her father Merle was head of the Friends School in Holguin, and later became Administrative Secretary for the Mission Board of Five Years Meeting (now FUM.) She married Herbert Hadley and they worked faithfully for FWCC, including hosting hundreds of international Friends over the years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert M. Hadley. Survivors include her children, Carol Hadley (C. Baird) Brown, Helen Hadley Dana and Stephen J. Hadley (Irena Zadonsky); four grandchildren, Hannah Brown Marzynski, Eliza Brown, Aaron Hadley Dana and Lydia Hadley Dana; two great grandsons, Jacob and Levi Marzynski; and one brother, Ray L. Davis. HANING Melita Eldridge Haning, 94, October 25, 2006, High Point Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Melita was born September 30, 1912, to Joseph Henry Eldridge and Jennie Richardson Eldridge. She was a homemaker and married to Theodore “Ted” Haning, who died in 2001. She was a member of High Point Friends Meeting, the Alice Paige White Class, USFW and was a volunteer with hospice. Survivors include one son, Eldridge (Samantha) Haning; two grandchildren, Gary (Jennifer) Haning and Lynn (Kenny) Jackson; two great-granddaughters, Marygrace and Katie Lynn Jackson; and several nieces and nephews. HAYWORTH Myron Claude Hayworth Sr. “Red”, 91, November 2, 2006, Springfield Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Myron was born May 14, 1915, to John Ensley Hayworth and Mary Emma Hepler. Myron “Red” was active in professional baseball most of his life. He first signed with the Yankee farm system as a catcher in 1936 and worked his way up from the minor leagues to the majors. He was a catcher on the 1944 St. Louis Browns World Series team. Also, he played baseball in Mexico, Cuba and Canada. Later in his career, he became a coach and then a baseball scout for several major league teams. He spent 53 years in baseball as a player, coach or scout. He was one of the initial founders of the Professional Baseball Representatives Association. Myron caught in all six games of the 1944 World Series and he donated his catcher’s mitt, used in the games, to the Baseball Hall of Fame at Cooperstown, New York. He held memberships in the following organizations: Springfield Friends Meeting and the John Jay Blair Sunday School Class; Oak View Grange; Professional Baseball Representatives Association; Major League Baseball Players and Alumni Association; Oak Ridge Military Academy Alumni Association. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Nettie Regina Hayworth and Dovie Mae Hayworth; four brothers, Henry, Orvie, Raymond and Chester Hayworth; and his wife, Ethel Wells, in January 1986. Survivors include one daughter, Nancy (Larry) Penry; one son, Myron C. (Reta) Hayworth Jr.; two sisters, Gertrude Macon and Hallie Brower; five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. KING Harold Edwin King, 81, October 24, 2006. Harold was born August 23, 1925 to Otis Andrew and Laura Mae (Helvie) King. He married Maxine “Patty” Spence on December 27, 1949. He later earned his Master’s degree at Butler University, now known as Christian Theological Seminary. He was recorded as a Friends minister in Western Yearly Meeting of Friends, Indiana. He retired as a Friends (Quaker) minister in 1993. He was a missionary in Cuba from 1950 to 1952. He spent 23 years in pastoral service and 22 years in mission work in Cuba, Honduras and Mexico. Nine of these 22 years were in the founding of 2 Friends meetings in northern Mexico: Matamoras and the nearby village of Esperanza-Reformada. He was a member of the Christian Ministry and Evangelism board of Western Yearly Meeting. He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Robert, Richard and Basil. Survivors include his wife of almost 57 years, Maxine (Patty) Spence King; three children, Cathy Jo Guyer, Mark King and Cynthia Ann King; one grandson, Jared Guyer; three brothers: Lloyd, Dallas and Jerry. KIRKMAN Allen Howard Kirkman, 89, October 2, 2006, Centre Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Allan was born on February 14, 1917, to Charles and Lillias Hockett Kirkman. He owned and operated “Kirkman & Sons” dairy farm for 50 years, and was a lifetime member of Centre Friends Meeting. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Dianne Kirkman Marshall; a son, David Kirkman; three sisters, Sarah Kirkman, Frances Smith, Laura Mae Isley; and two brothers, Delbert Kirkman and Dennis Kirkman. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Ruth Morgan Kirkman; one daughter, Mary K. (Steve) Edwards; two sons, James (Bonnie) Kirkman and Charlie (Rhonda) Kirkman; three sisters, Margaret Coltrane, Betty Jane Hinshaw and Kathleen Morgan; 11 grandchildren, Steven Edwards, Christina Garner, Jennifer Edwards, Morgan Marshall, Alex Kirkman, Brian Kirkman, Brittanie Kirkman, David Kirkman Jr., Laura Kirkman, Rebecca Kirkman and Ben Kirkman. LEONHARD Myron “Mickey” Peter Leonhard, 84, October 30, 2006, Bethesda Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Myron was born May 30,1922, to Edward C. and Margaret W. Leonhard. He was a Recorded Friends Minister who accepted God’s call into his service in middle age and was recorded in 1967 by North Carolina Yearly Meeting of Friends. He served four Friends Meetings as full-time pastor, Bethesda, Kernersville, Spring Garden and Forsyth; and. served on various committees in North Carolina Yearly Meeting. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Mary Sills; three daughters, Mary Ellen Cromer, Myra (Olin) Idol and Cynthia (Dana) Isley; fi ve grandchildren, Joy Willard, Jeremy (Heidi) Warner, Bryan (Dee) Willard, Stephanie (Shane) Richardson and Jason Cromer; and four great grandchildren and one sister, Virginia Rowland. MATTHEWS Charles Wesley Matthews, 76, November 19, 2006, Forbush Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Charles was born April 9, 1930, to Henry and Emma Hauser Matthews. He was a member of Forbush Friends Meeting, where he served as an elder, a member of the fi nance committee, men’s group and helped to organize the Easter sunrise breakfast for more than 20 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Juneous “Doonie” Matthews and Nelson Matthews and two sisters, Neil Freeman and Juanita Richardson. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Ruby Ruth Huie Matthews; four sons, Wayne (Loretta) Matthews, Hoke (Catherine) Matthews, Clint (Kim) Matthews, and John (Clara) Matthews; nine grandchildren, Jessica, Abby, Emmy, Wes, Chelsea, John, Makayla, Jacob, and Grayson Matthews; two brothers, Mawyer Matthews and Bill Matthews; and one sister, Edith Russell. PERDUE Mary Elizabeth Cook Perdue, 70, November 5, 2006, Concord Friends Meeting,, North Carolina. Mary was born on January 20, 1936, to Fannie Brower Cook and George W. Cook. She was a member of Concord Friends Meeting, for many years was president of the Missionary Circle, and one of the church’s pianists. She was a member of the Sumner Extension Homemakers Club for 20 years, and served in various offi ces including president and on the State Board of State Extension Club and as such attended many seminars at the United Nations in New York City as a delegate. She traveled extensively including Europe, the Middle East, South America, Hawaii, Canada, and most of the 50 US States. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Fred and Glen Cook; and three sisters, Rosie Madeline Cook, Gertrude Cook Pegram and Geneva Cook Jessup. Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Morris Ray Perdue; three children, Morris (Pam) Perdue, Jr., Alan W. (Lisa) Perdue and Karen Perdue Coltrane; eight grandchildren, Nicholas Perdue, Christopher Perdue, Leslie Perdue, Daniel Perdue, Brittany Perdue, Tyler Perdue, Alexis Perdue, and Austin Coltrane; two stepgrandchildren; Jeana Taylor and Crystal Wise; two step-great-grandchildren; Summer Wise and Michaela Wise; one sister, Virginia Cook Leonard; and Victoria (Nikki) Hodges. PHILLIPS The Rev. Isaac Newton Phillips, 92, October 27, 2006, Thomasville Friends Church, North Carolina. Isaac was born on November 27, 1913, to William E. and Viola Brady Phillips. He pastored Friends churches for well over 50 years in North Carolina and Indiana. He attended the Thomasville Friends Church in North Carolina as long as his health permitted. He was preceded in death by his parents; fi ve sisters; three brothers; his daughter, Ardena Phillips in 2003, and his wife, the former Esther Kirby in 2000. Survivors include his son, Daniel (Jennifer) Phillips; one brother, Ted (Bronna) Phillips; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. RAIFORD Walter H. “Junior” Raiford, Jr., 66, October 25, 2006, Corinth Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Walter was born on April 17, 1940 to Walter H. Raiford, Sr. and Kathleen Bradshaw Raiford. He retired in 2002 after 20 years of service as an E. P. tender in the power plant at International Paper in Franklin, VA. He was a life-long member and former elder at Corinth Friends Meeting. Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Linda Dickerson Raiford; one daughter, Christy (Don) Raiford Wilson; three grandchildren, Christopher Michael Wilson, Dylan Robert Wilson and Joshua Raiford Wilson; two sisters, Barbara Raiford (James) Brown and Audrey Raiford Hancock; and numerous other family members. REECE Mamie Pearl Collins Reece, 88, November 4, 2006, Deep Creek Friends Church, North Carolina. Mamie was born on May 22, 1918, to James Will and Flora Bell Wishon Collins. She was a member of Deep Creek Friends Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Lee Reece; her parents; one sister, Ethel Parker; and two brothers, Roy Collins and James Collins, Jr. Survivors include her children, Tony (Geneva) Reece and Judy (Steve) Reece; one sister, Annie (Lawrence) Dobbins; one brother, Gurney (Annie Pearl) Collins; four grandchildren, Danny (Jennifer) Reece, Byron Reece, Julie (Brian) Schietinger and Stephen (Kelly) Reece; and five great-grandchildren, Anna Reece, Charles Reece, Reece Schietinger, Claire Schietinger and Colby Schietinger. WARDEN Nettie Reavis Warden, 88, October 16, 2006, of Harmony Grove Friends, North Carolina. Nettie was born June 14, 1918, to Julian Winfield and Mary Bryant Reavis. She was a member of Harmony Grove Friends Church. She and her husband, Bruce, were owners and operators of Wardens Furniture and Clothing for over 40 years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bruce Warden; seven sisters; and three brothers. Survivors include her daughter, Nancy Warden (Gray) Cranfill; two grandsons, Tony (Trish) Cranfill and David (Jamie) Cranfill; great-granddaughter, Rylee Cranfill; and one sister, Blanche Wilmoth. WILLIAMS Bera Frazier Williams, 92, October 18, 2006, Centre Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Bera was born on April 20, 1914, to Anderson Roseboro Frazier and Lillie Aller Lewallen. She was a member of Centre Friends Meeting. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stephen D. Williams; and three brothers, Lois D. Frazier, Theodore “Ted” Frazier and Theo Frazier. Survivors include two brothers, Sabra Frazier and Dwight Frazier; eight children, Ernestine W. (Leroy) Wilkins, Alwanda “Wanda” W. (Allen) Beane, Jim (Carol) Williams, Delphine W. (Tony) Warren, Mazel Williams, Gilbert (Glenna) Williams, Nancy W. (Larry) Beeson and Stephen (Ann) Williams; 13 grandchildren, Karen Parrish, Jay Wilkins, Sherri Davis, April Wilkins-Little, Shane Handy, Melanie Coble, Douglas Beeson, Jason Beeson, Amy Coltrane, Stephen Williams, Jr., Jillian Williams, Clinton Williams and Serena Williams; and 21 great-grandchildren. WOOD Amos Sidney Wood, 95, September 27, 2006, Spring Garden Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Amos was born in March 1911, to William and Rachael Sell Wood. He retired from Mock-Judson Hosiery Company. In January, 1935, Amos married Viola Beatrice Strickland. He was an active member of Spring Garden Friends Meeting for almost 70 years, holding many leadership positions and became recognized in his later years as the neighborhood historian. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and stepmother, Nealie Kiger Wood; one son, Clarence Andrew Wood; and three brothers, Avery, Orville, and Irvin. Survivors include one son, C. Kenneth (Sylvia) Wood; two sisters, Lucy Mac Bishop and Ruby Bowden; four grandchildren, Diana (Robert) Jones, Jennifer (Brian) Jones, Michael Wood and Kenneth Wood; and five great-grandchildren.
