Deaths ALBRIGHT Ashley Elizabeth “Pookie” Albright, 24, December 10, 2006, Rocky River Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Ashley was born on January 25, 1982, the daughter of Bonnie P. and Ben Albright. A member of Rocky River Friends Meeting, Ashley was a potter and loved working with children, especially with the Vacation Bible School crafts program. She was a graduate of Faith Christian School and was attending the pottery course at Montgomery Community College. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Dorothy W. “Dot” and D. V. Pike, Jr. Survivor include her parents, Bonnie and Ben Albright; two brothers, Spence and Gavin Albright; her paternal grandparents, Doris and Pete Albright, several aunts, uncles and cousins. BELL John D. Bell, 81, December 15, 2006, Hortonville Friends Meeting, Indiana. John was born March 11, 1925 to John W. and Carrie (Cox) Bell. He was a member of Hortonville Friends Meeting, Indiana Association of CPAs, American Institute of CPAs, Western Yearly Meeting, Friends United Meeting and served on the Board of Friends Extension Corp. John retired in 1990 as an accountant for the Thorntown Telephone Company and served as an accountant for the Indiana Implement Dealer’s Association. He was a farmer and operated a tax service from his home. He was a 1962 graduate of Central Business College of Indianapolis, and received his CPA degree in 1973. John married Marilynn W. (Weaver) Bell on September 6, 1953. He was preceded in death by his sister, Rosemary Hockett and brother-in-law, Stanley Walker. Survivors include his wife, Marilynn; two sons, John David (Sharon) Bell and Dan Kermit (Mathilda Navias) Bell; one daughter, Alice Diane (Mark) Siewert; two sisters, Alice Bell and Katherine Walker; five grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. BRANCH Emma Lea Powell Branch, 90, January 25, 2007, Corinth Friends Meeting, Ivor, Virginia. Born on May 9, 1916, she was the daughter of Samuel J. & Mary Raiford Powell. Emma was a member of Corinth Friends Meeting for all of her adult life where she served in many capacities including Elder, Clerk, President of Ladies Aid and Sunday School Teacher. She also served as a member of the Southampton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Association and the Southampton County Home Demonstration Club for many years. She was a homemaker and operated a beauty salon in her home for several years. She was preceded in death by Paul Branch, her husband of 57 years; one son, Paul Wayne Branch; two sisters and five brothers. Survivors include two sons, Randal B. (Joy) Branch and Royce C. (Barbara) Branch; one daughter, Paula Lea Branch; one daughter-in-law, Doris Branch; one sister, Gladys P. Branch; 12 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. FABERT Laren Fabert, 76, December 18, 2006, Jericho Friends Meeting, Winchester, Indiana. Laren was born on August 8, 1930, the son of John and Annabell (Winget) Fabert. He was a graduate of Purdue University and Ball State University. He was an educator for 38 years. He was a member of the Saratoga Lions Club and a member of Jericho Friends Meeting where he held many positions. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepmother, Ruth; one sister, Lillis Lohman; and one brother, Al Gardner. Survivors include his wife of almost 54 years, Annette; five daughters, Linda (John) Emanuelson, Pam (Tom) Sells, Diana (Scott) Powell, Deb (Mike) Kirklin, Sheryl (Bill); 15 grandchildren, Sara Sells, Chantelle (Derek) Paul, Jessica Sells, Emily Sells, Jennifer Powell, Kristi Powell, Justin (fiance Melissa) Powell, Kati (Joe) Crater, Cristina Lacy, Matt Lacy, Erica Lacy, April (Wes) Lynch, Josh Thornburg, Levi Thornburg, Elijah Thornburg; two step-children, and three step great-grandchildren; one brother, Marion (Helen) Fabert; three brothers-in-law; a sister-in-law,; several nieces, nephews, greatnieces and great-nephews. GIBSON Hardy Slate Gibson, 80, December 13, 2006, Cane Creek Friends Meeting, Snow Camp, North Carolina. He was the son of Rufus Emmett Gibson and Mae McPherson Gibson. He was retired from I. Holt Lumber Company. He was a lifelong member of Cane Creek Friends Meeting, where he taught Sunday School for many years and was a member of various committees. He was a charter member of the Snow Camp Fire Department and the Sylvan Ruritan Club, an active member of the NC Friends Disaster Service, and a member of the Sylvan School Hammer Board. Survivors include his wife, Cora Lee Thompson Gibson; two sons, Gregory (Cathy) Gibson and Allen (Carol) Gibson; one daughter, Sybil Gibson; one grandson, Daniel Gibson, one granddaughter, Rachel Gibson; and one brother, Millard B. Gibson. HAWKINS Everett Darrell “Sadie” Hawkins, 80, October 9, 2006, Wabash Friends Church, Indiana. Everett was born November 14, 1925, to Darrell B. and Jessie A. (Roser) Hawkins. He married Phyllis Landis on February 11, 1949. He was a lifelong farmer and member of the Wabash Friends Church. Survivors include his wife, Phyllis; one son, Michael (Pamela) Hawkins; one daughter, Barbara (Wayne) Hill; three grandsons, Ryan (Kim) Hawkins, Aaron Hawkins and Joseph Hawkins; two sisters, Janet (Dean) Wolfal and Marjorie (Richard) Sparling. HOLMES Philip James Holmes, 75, August 8, 2006, Campus Friends Meeting, Wilmington, Ohio. Born January 16, 1931, Phil graduated from Ohio State University and Ohio State University School of Dentistry. He served six years as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force and, recalled to the Air Force during the Cuban Missile Crisis, Phil served as a military dentist until his retirement in 1978. His service included several years in Vietnam, where he earned both the Vietnamese Medal of Honor and the U.S. Bronze Star for his leading role in the Medical Civic Action Program. Upon retirement, Phil established a private practice in Hillsboro, Ohio and began attending Campus Friends Meeting in Wilmington where he soon became an active and faithful member. From his military experiences and subsequent conversion to Christian pacifism, he brought a unique perspective on the Quaker Peace Testimony. Survivors include his former wife, Jean Holmes; five daughters, Jody (John) Jones, Mindy (Michael) Beeman, Erin Holmes (Samuel Gingrich), Gretchen (Michael) Huttleston and Kelly (Rodney) Snyder; one son, Stacy (Angela) Holmes; 15 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. JARVIS Dr. William Cebert Jarvis, 79, December 3, 2006, Springfield Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Dr. Jarvis was born December 29, 1926 to Lewis Beal and Maude E. Jarvis. He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry. A birthright member of Springfield Friends Meeting, he was an active member of the meeting and served in various capacities. He served in leadership in many dental organizations and was a member of the faculty of the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry and the Academy of General Dentistry. Dr. Jarvis was a United States Navy veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, Swannanoa Thelma Talton Jarvis; four sons, Thomas Lewis Jarvis, James Talton (Dana) Jarvis, Melvin (Virginia) Jarvis and Dr. William David (Dr. Bennie L. Jarvis) Jarvis; five grandchildren, William, Faith, Glenn, Grayson and Justin; and one sister, Kathleen E. Jarvis. KEY Gene Samuel Key, 79, December 17, 2006, Bethel Friends Meeting, Asheboro, North Carolina. Gene served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He graduated with a B.A. in English from Guilford College. He indulged a lifelong passion for writing through stints as a newspaper columnist. He retired in 1992 from Keyway Contractors. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Elmer Key and Mary Martha Nichols Key; and four brothers Bruce Key, Reece Key, Worth Key and Wade Key. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Polly Marshall Key; two daughters, Cassandra Ann “Sandy” Key and Susan Key Heilig; one son, Gene Samuel Key, Jr.; one granddaughter, Madison Ann Heilig; two brothers, June (Jewel) Key and Frank Key; three sisters, Lottie (Joe) Dix, Betty Putnam and Linda (Gene) Pleasants. LELAND Hazel Leland, 89, December 24, 2006, New Garden Friends Meeting, Greensboro, North Carolina. Hazel was born June 30, 1917, to Arthur and Mamie Smith. Hazel, a birthright Quaker in Richmond, Indiana, graduated from Earlham College, taught English, home economics, and business courses at Wilmington Friends, Delaware, Westtown Friends, Pennsylvania., in public schools in Maryland and Colorado and at Purdue University in Indiana. After raising her six children, Hazel earned her master’s degree in English at the University of Vermont and assisted students at Vermont College. Hazel and Pete were active alumni of Earlham College. Hazel was a community leader; active supporter of the symphony, leader of Quaker Youth Groups, Camp Fire Girls, Cub Scouts, PTA, and served as the first woman member of Indianapolis’ Washington Township School Board. After her family moved to Vermont, Hazel helped create Friends of the Vermont State House, was a trustee of Vermont College and Norwich University, president of Vermont’s AAUW and President of Vermont Greenup. Hazel and Pete were active in the creation of Plainfield Friends Meeting in Vermont. Hazel was preceded n death by her parents; her husband, Pete; and three younger sisters, Mary, Ruth and Martha. Survivors include her six children, Jeanne (Ed) Corbin, Dr. James (Dr. Diane) Leland, Barbara Leland, Marjie McElfresh, David Leland and Marilyn (Terry) Philbrook; 14 grandchildren; six nieces and nephews. LIVINGSTON Dorothy Louise Livingston, 83, April 16, 2006, Pima Monthly Meeting, Tucson, Arizona. Dorothy was born March 4,1923 to Louis and Frieda Dotzauer. She graduated from Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio with a B.A. in Religious Education and then worked in New York City where she married David Livingston. They joined Ridgewood Monthly Meeting, New Jersey. Dorothy helped start “Friends Neighborhood Nursery,” an integrated preschool, served on several committees and was active in New York Yearly Meeting. She was a lifetime activist for peace and justice. Dorothy and David retired to Tucson, Arizona and became active in Pima Meeting; she participated actively in the life of the meeting, Arizona Half Yearly Meeting and Intermountain Yearly Meeting. Survivors include David Livingston, her husband of 57 years; her twin daughters, Deborah (Dennis Keyes) Livingston and Marcia (Jana Sanguinetti ) Livingston; four grandchildren, Wenonah (Stephan) Michallet-Ferrier, Siobhan and Seamus Keyes and Omy (Kevin Phillips) Keyes; and four great-grandchildren, Estevan, Kailen, Liam and Luca. MISSON Marion Anna (Hennigson) Misson, 95, September 17, 2006, Jericho Friends Meeting, Winchester, Indiana. Marion was born March 18, 1911, the second child of Eugene and Anna (Kime) Hennigson. She attended Earlham College for two years where she studied languages. She was a member of Jericho Friends Meeting and she was a member of the Randolph County Humane Society. She played the violin in both the Muncie and Richmond symphony orchestras and for several Winchester Community High School musicals. She wrote articles for the Winchester News-Gazette about animals. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by: her husband of 49 years, Fred Misson; one brother, George Hennigson; and one sister, Florence Hennigson. Survivors include two sons, Fred (Anita) Misson, Jr., and Matthew Misson; and one daughter, Virginia (Conrad) Hostetler; one sister, Min Smith; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. ROLLINS Madge Hutchens (Stone) Badgett Rollins, 92, January 24, 2007, White Plains Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Madge was born April 4, 1914 to Enoch “Dock” Martin Stone and Bessie Maude Hutchens Stone. She retired after teaching 44 years in the Surry County School System. She served as both pianist and organist for White Plains Friends Meeting for many years. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Herman Presley Badgett, and her second husband, Rev. Bascom G. Rollins. Survivors include one sister, Martha Hope (Alvin) Parker; one niece, Lynn Lorette; and one nephew, Kenton Stone. SARVER June Pauline Fleener, 89, October 11, 2006, Garden Grove Friends Church, California. June was born June 3, 1917 on a farm near Searsboro, Iowa. She married Keith Sarver.She felt her life needed to be different, so she became a Christian. Keith liked the change he saw and was converted. Three years later, he felt the call to be a minister, and they moved to attend Chicago Evangelistic Institute. While there, June worked at Woolworth’s and later for a pharmaceutical chemist. June served as a pastor’s wife in the Midwest before they moved to California. After three years there, Keith became the Superintendent of California Yearly Meeting and for the next 24 years they lived in Whittier, CA. June enjoyed many trips with Keith, visiting Friends missions in Alaska and Central America and attending Friends Conferences in the States and England. In 1992 they moved to Quaker Gardens, a Friends retirement home and they became members of the Garden Grove Friends Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Keith, on April 10, 2001. Survivors include a foster daughter, Beverly Gruszezyk; and two sisters, Aileen Fleener and Rosalie Van Owen. STOCKTON Miriam Tollefson Stockton, 72, November 22, 2006, Northwest Community Friends Church, Tuscon Arizona. Born in Augusta, Maine, to Harold and Gladys Tollefson, Friends minister in New England, Maryland, and the Midwest. She attended Guilford College. She was the wife of Walter Scott Stockton, and they resided in Tucson, AZ for many years. Active in the world of art, she illustrated material used by Harold Tollefson in his promotional literature for Friends United Meeting’s Friends Advance program. In Tucson, Miriam used her creativity in projects at her church, Northwest Community Friends. She had paintings in several galleries, owned her own art and craft gallery, and developed a mail-order business called “Quaker Heritage Showcase,” which exemplified and promoted her Quaker ideals and background. Survivors include her husband, Scotty; two sons, Charles (Amy) Collins and John (Terry) Collins; five grandchildren; two greatgrandchildren; one brother, Robert (Martha) Tollefson and two sisters, Margaret (Alan) Inglis and Elsie (Charles) Carter. Janet was born on October 13, 1914, to Charles and Nellie (Thrush) Butt. She married Adrian Stouffer on April 24, 1943. She was a member of the Wabash Friends Church, the United Society of Friends Women, and served on several committees at the church over the years. She was a charter member of the Hoosier Homemaker Home Extension Club and loved working on the farm with her husband. She was preceded in death by her husband, Adrian , and one sister, Lois Stout. Survivors include one son, David (Renee) Stouffer; two granddaughters, Heather (Ryan) Hunsberger and Melanie (Ryan) Brainard; three great-grandchildren, Luke Hunsberger, Ian Hunsberger, and Madeline Brainard; two sisters, Frances Hanaway and Georgia Durkes. SURGEON Lucille Coble Surgeon, 86, December 6, 2006, Cane Creek Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Lucille was born on October 29, 1920, to Drury James Coble and Della Hobby Coble. She was a lifelong member of Cane Creek Friends Meeting. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Wade F. Coble, J. Finley Coble, William E. Coble and Hiram N. Coble; and one sister, Mattie Mae Braxton. Survivors include two daughters, Linda (Wayne) Lewallen, Mary (Richard) Puryear; six grandchildren, Tammy Burlingham, Sherry Lewallen, Quinn Sharpe, Corey Sharpe, Josh Sharpe and Victoria Councilman; and six great-grandchildren. THOMPSON Charles Dale Thompson, 76, December 7, 2006, Cane Creek Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Charles was the son of Carl Lyman and Flora Pike Thompson. He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina School of Pharmacy, a member of Alpha Gamma Alumni of the Alpha Gamma Chi Fraternity at UNC-CH, a retired consultant pharmacist from Alamance Regional Medical Center, member of the N.C. Pharmacy Association. He was a member of Cane Creek Friends Meeting. Survivors include his wife, Laura Teague Thompson; one son, Timothy D. (Linda) Thompson; and one granddaughter, Brittany Ann Thompson. YOUNG Marjorie Hope Young, 83, April 11, 2006, Campus Friends Meeting, Wilmington, Ohio. Born January 15, 1923, Marjorie held degrees from Sarah Lawrence College, Columbia University and New York University. Immediately after World War II, she worked in war-ravaged France as a social worker and fashion model, a combination that caught the attention of Life magazine, which highlighted her adventures. She married James H. Young on August 7, 1971. She was author, or co-author with her husband, of numerous professional articles and five books: Youth Against the World (1965); The Struggle for Humanity: Agents of Non-violence in a Violent World (1977); South African Churches in a Revolutionary Situation (1981); Faces of Homelessness (1986); and Voices of Hope in the Struggle to Save the Planet (2000). From 1975 to 1988, Marjorie Hope Young and her husband held a joint appointment in sociology and social work at Wilmington College. They became active members of Campus Friends Meeting. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim in 2001. Survivors include her sister, Cynthia Hope, and three nieces.
