Deaths

CISSNER Joy Cissner, 68, March 11, 2007, Center Friends Church, Ohio. Joy was born in 1939. She was a member of Center Friends Meeting for over 50 years where she served on many committees and taught Sunday school. She was a member of USFW and was president for several years. She is preceded in death by both her parents. Survivors include her husband, Robert and their four children.

COMPTON Charles Joseph Compton, 84, April 8, 2007, Illinois. Joe was born February 1, 1923, in Indianapolis, IN to John and Mary Compton. Joe was born into a Quaker family, and his father John pastored numerous Friends meetings throughout Indiana. Joe graduated from Ball State Teachers’ College and received a master’s degree from Northwestern University. Joe centered his career around music as he taught music and also directed choirs and played organ in several churches. He is preceded in death by both his parents. Survivors include his wife of nearly 49 years, Beverley; sons, Philip (Cindy) and Andrew (Jodi) Compton and seven grandsons.

HEAVILIN Barbara Anne Heavilin, 90, June 27, 2007, West Richmond Friends Meeting, Indiana. Barbara was born May 30, 1917, to Glen A and Edna Littrick Davis. She attended Butler University and was a member of West Richmond Friends Meeting, Quaker Hill Foundation Board, Wayne County Literacy, was a tutor at Morrisson-Reeves Library and Richmond High School. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Rex and Richard E. Davis; and four grandsons. Survivors include her husband of 69 years, George E. Heavilin; one sister, Phyllis Bailey; four sons Glen (Marilyn), George (Catherine), David F., and Albert J. Heavilin; three daughters, Sarah Elizabeth (Lawrence) Barker, Jane A. (William) Black and Ruth E. (David) Blair; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

HOOVER Eleanor Eunice Blair Hoover, 97, June 28, 2007, High Point Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Eleanor was born January 3, 1910, to Jesse W. and Eunice Henley Blair. She attended Guilford College and worked for the Guilford County Department of Social Service. She was a member of High Point Friends Meeting, Alice Paige White Sunday School class and the Elizabeth Sykes Circle. She was preceded in death by both her parents; her husband, Edward Floyd and second husband, Glenn Hoover. Survivors include two stepdaughters, Eunice Blair Floyd and Elizabeth York Gerlock; four step-grandchildren and seven step-great-grandchildren.

INMAN William Carl Inman, Sr., 92, May 31, 2007, Concord Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Carl was born April 28, 1915. He was a member of the Concord Friends Meeting where he served on numerous committees and was the Sunday School Superintendent. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Agnes Forrest Inman and two daughters, Brenda Inman Lanning and Donna Marie Inman. Survivors include three sons, William Carl (Brenda) Jr., Michael Wayne, and David Jonathan (Elaine) Inman; one daughter, Norma (Charlie) Clark; two brothers, Frank (Lucy) and Robert Baker; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

MONEY Ben Junior Money, 85, June 14, 2007, Pilot View Friends Church, North Carolina. Ben Junior Money was born June 24, 1921, to B.C. and Valley Brown Money. He was a member of Pilot View Friends Church, held offices in North Carolina Friends Yearly Meeting and was a member of the Yadkin County Senior Chorus. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Ruth Whitaker and Lola Brown and one brother, Brodie Money. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Annie Adams Money; one daughter Judy Clarke Sugart; three grandchildren, Derek, Emily and Joel Shugart; and four sisters, Ura Martin, Lela Johnson, Ada Lee Jester and Doris Hobson.

ROBERTSON Thomas Theodore Robertson, 95, July 3, 2007, Springfield Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Tom was born July 14, 1911, to Robert G. and Minnie Hendricks Robertson. He was a member of Springfield Friends Meeting and a retired farmer. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Hazel Yarborough; two children, Hadley (Sylvia) Robertson and Elda (William) Newsome; six grandchildren, Craig, Jeff, and Stephen Newsome, Bobby and Lee Robertson and Dianne Neal; five step-grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

SOLENBERGER Robert Reeves Solenberger, 90, December 22, 2006, Pima Friends Meeting, Arizona. Robert was born September 14, 1916, the son of Edwin and Edith Reeves Solenberger. He was a member of Pima Friends Meeting in Tuscon, Arizona where he served on the Peace and Social Concerns committee. He was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, with a graduate degree in Anthropology and Oriental Studies. He was a conscientious objector during WWII, concerning himself with the rights of indigenous people throughout the world. He was the author of several scholarly articles in Anthropology. He was preceded in death by both of his parents. Survivors include one brother, Donald; two sons, Thomas (Madeline) and Edwin (Angela) Solenberger; four grandchildren, Aaron, Adrienne, Thomas and Tess and six great-grandchildren.

TALBERT Elisabeth “Libby” Sullivan Talbert, 93, June 11, 2007, New Garden Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Libby was born September 22, 1914, to Lula Maude and Robert Sullivan. She was a graduate of Queens College and was a social worker in child protective and child adoption services through the 1960s. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 70 years, John Wallace Talbert. Survivors include; two sons, John (Katherine) and Michael (Bryna Coonin) Talbert and one daughter, Elaine (Ken) Gruber.

TALBERT John Wallace Talbert, 97, June 9, 2007, New Garden Friends Meeting, North Carolina. John was born February 1, 1910, to Joseph and Sarah Talbert. A graduate of Clemson University, he worked as an agricultural extension agent. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of New Garden Friends Meeting and stayed at Friends Home West, where he enjoyed Bible Study. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include two sons, John (Katherine) and Michael (Bryna Coonin) Talbert and one daughter, Elaine (Ken) Gruber.

YORK Russell McKinley York, Sr., 75, November 30, 2006, White Plains Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Russell was born June 25, 1931, to Linnie McKinley and Jettie Mae Robertson York. He was a member of the White Plains Friends Meeting; a part-owner of York Oil Company, a charter member of the White Plains Ruritan Club, a member of the White Plains Volunteer Fire Department, Scout Master of Troop #553 and a woodcraftsman. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Beulah York Lane and one brother, Bob Lee York. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Moore York; one daughter, Robin (Dale) White; one son, Russell McKinley (Tobi) York Jr.; five grandchildren, Crystal (Jimmy) Branch, Tina (Jason) Whitaker, Sheena White, McKinley and Hunter York; one great-granddaughter, Karson Branch; and two brothers, Tom (Marian) and Jack (Madge) York.
