CASHATT Robert Sidney Cashatt, 74, September 10, 2007, Cedar Square Friends Meeting Cemetery, Archdale, North Carolina. Robert was the son of James and Etta Pierce Cashatt. He was a dairy farmer and owner of H and M Grocery and Hardware. Robert was a member of Cedar Square Friends Meeting and a strong supporter of the youth and other activities throughout his community. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Doris Davis Cashatt; two daughters: Cathy (Dennis) Wilkins and Ellen (Clay) Cooper; one son, Davis (Alisa) Cashatt; four grandchildren, Poppy (David) Wilkins Cox, Jason (Amber) Wilkins, Heather (Jason) Cashatt Wright and Zackary Cashatt; two great-grandchildren, Sidney Ann Cox and Andrew Cox; three brothers, Elmer (Bobbie) Cashatt, Arvel (Mildred) Cashatt and Clinton (Annie) Cashatt; and four sisters, Hazel (Oscar) Lowe, Pearl Hunt, Rosie (Nolan) Austin and Christine (Billy) Tucker.

CAVE Edward Crawley Cave, Sr., 78, September 13, 2007, Forbush Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Edward was born on July 15, 1929 to Crawley Levi and Phebe Ann Brendle Cave. He was a member of Forbush Friends Meeting and was retired from the Sara Lee Corp. He was preceded in death by his parents; and four brothers, Clyde Cave, Marvin Cave, Rufus Cave, and J.E. Cave. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Marie Vestal Cave; his children, Eddie (Karen) Cave, Jr., Diane (Mike) Robbins and Clinton (April) Cave; six grandchildren, Preston Cave, Sharon Spillman, Travis Matthews, Justin Cave, Evan Cave and LouAnn Davis; six great-grandchildren; his sisters, Archie Bell Groce, Violet Jester, Pansey (Leroy) Speer, Ruby (J.E.) Finney; and one brother, Junior (Lana) Cave.

COUNCIL Elizabeth Johnson Council, 84, August 3, 2007, Corinth Friends Meeting, Ivor, Virginia. Elizabeth was born July 13, 1923, to James Frank Johnson and Olia Blythe Johnson. She was preceded in death by her husband, William J. Council. Survivors include one daughter, Loretta Felgentreu; three sons, Billy (Dot) Council, Bobby and John (Charlotte) Council; 10 grandchildren, Janet Stephens, Kevin (Tracie) Felgentreu, Jason, Dustin, Holly, Bethany, Autumn and Ethan Council, David (Alicia) Rose and Dean (Jennifer) Rose; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter and two sisters, Christine J. Ricks and Evelyn J. Johnston.

HEAVILIN Barbara Heavilin, 90, June 27, 2007, West Richmond Friends Meeting, Indiana. Barbara was born in 1917. She and George had seven children and took in several more foster children. Barbara was deeply interested in education and volunteered for many years at Richmond Friends School. In 1985, she and George sold their home, bought a motor home and “ran away” to work with Carson & Barnes Circus, where Barbara taught school to the children of the circus and George played in the circus band. Barbara’s wonderful book, Are You in the Circus? tells the story of that part of their life. They moved to Interfaith Apartments where Barbara was treasurer for the resident’s council and very active with the life of the community. She and George had been looking forward to their 70th wedding anniversary on August 2, 2007.

HICKMAN James “Wade” Hickman, 96, March 26, 2007, First Friends Church, Knoxville, Tennessee. Wade was born September 30, 1910, to Lewis and Florence Hickman in Oklahoma. He was pastor of First Friends Church, Knoxville from 1970-1992 and remained a faithful attender until recently when frail health took its toll on body and spirit. He served the Meeting, Friendsville Quarterly Meeting and Wilmington Yearly Meeting in many ways and in various offices. Wade began his ministry in Belleville, Kansas, in 1947 and became part of Wilmington Yearly Meeting in 1963 at Chester Meeting, Ohio. In 1970, they moved to Knoxville to serve First Friends Church. Survivors include his wife of 74 years, Velma Hickman; one son, Wayne (Rachel) Hickman; two daughters, Marge Nelson and Carolyn Hickman; two sisters, Leta Hickman and Vivian Thornburg; seven grandchildren, Robert Hickman, Bethany Hickman, Steve Nelson, Michelle Jensen, Don Jackson, Pam Unruh and Corey Hickman; nine great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

HURLEY Dorothy Wilson Hurley, 79, August 8, 2007, First Friends Meeting, Greensboro, North Carolina. “Dot” was born in High Point on August 17, 1927, to E.S. Wilson, Jr., and Altah W. Wilson. She was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She was an active member of First Friends Meeting for more than 50 years. She was employed with Vick Chemical Company, the Smith Richardson Foundation and operated a North Carolina license tag agency in Greensboro. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Carolyn W. Hurley and one brother, Edward Harold Wilson. Survivors include her husband, M. Ray Hurley; one son, Marshall (Deborah) Hurley; one daughter, Kim (Ruffin) Blackard; two sisters, Madge W. Jester and June W. Taylor; and four grandchildren, Anderson Hurley, Mary Claire Hurley, Laura Blackard and Garrett Blackard.

LAYDEN Ruth Winslow Layden, 92, August 16, 2007, Piney Woods Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Ruth was the daughter of Charlie Thomas and Mae White Winslow. A homemaker, she was a member of Piney Woods Friends Meeting, had formerly served as a Sunday school teacher and had been active in the Adult Choir and the Women’s Missionary Society. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Oliver Layden, Sr. Survivors include three daughters, Ruth Ann (Calvin) Riddick, Betty Lois Lane and Marvis (Leroy) Parrish; four sons, James O. “Teny” (Avis) Layden, Jr., Wesley E. (Shirley) Layden, Sr., Millard T. “Shorty” (Carolyn) Layden, Sr. and Kenneth Ray (Doris) Layden Sr.; one sister, Clara Hendren; two brothers, Ernest Melvin Winslow and Clinton Ray Winslow; 18 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

SHREEVE Rose M. Bowling Shreeve, 61, July 2, 2007, Portland Friends Meeting, Indiana. Rose was born on March 7, 1946, to George and Ethel (Morgan) Mast. She was married on May 24, 1997, to Lowell Shreeve. She had worked at Bearcreek Farms. A member of Portland Friends Meeting, Rose served in several capacities — as a member of the Christian Education Committee and a teacher of the Gleaners Class. She and Olive Watson sponsored an elementary youth group called the Agape Youth Group. She also sang in the choir and served on the Ministry and Oversight Committee and the Peace and Christian Social Concerns Committee. She and Lowell also shared custodial responsibilities at the time of her death. Survivors include her husband Lowell.

SPOON Pearl Spoon, 91, August 5, 2007, West Richmond Friends, Indiana. A native of Kansas, Pearl was a long-time Quaker missionary and served as principal at Kaimosi Girls High School in Kenya from 1949-1965. After her return from Kenya, she joined West Richmond Friends Meeting, was very active at West Richmond for many years and served on West Richmond’s Ministry Team in the early 1980s. She was also active in the Indiana USFW. She taught at several schools in the United States as well as a mountain school in Tellico Plains, Tennessee.

VAN HOY William F. Van Hoy, Jr., 91, August 14, 2007, Asheboro Friends Meeting, North Carolina. William was born January 21, 1916. In 1965, he married Lois Osborne Levering. He was a conscientious objector during World War II. He was known to most in Asheboro as “Mr. Van Hoy,” since he spent 31 years teaching Social Studies at Asheboro High School and he was very involved in the community. He was preceded in death by one son, Sammy. Survivors include one daughter, Teresa; one son, Michael; and one great nephew, Greg Allen.
