ALBERTSON Rogers Charles Albertson, 69, November 23, 2007, Archdale Friends, North Carolina. A native of the Archdale area most of his life, he was born April 27, 1938, a son of the late Carl Charles Albertson and the late Myrtle Samuel Albertson. He was employed as a printer at Wayne Trademark, Inc. until his retirement in 2004. Mr. Albertson was well known as a Ham Radio Operator, call number #WA4BPL and was a member of the High Point Amateur Radio Club. An accomplished Steel Guitar player, he was known for his love of music and his ability to write songs. He was a member of the Birch Creek country and western band. On April 21, 1962, he married Etta Marlene Mash, who died on May 14, 2003. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Hines. Surviving are two daughters, Chandra (Jeffrey) Cook and Kimberly M. Albertson and her companion, Fred; one brother, Roland (Naomi) Albertson; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held in the Archdale Friends meetinghouse by Pastor Ben Hurley and Becky Memmelaar. BOSWORTH Richard Anderson (Bud) Bosworth, 89, November 10, 2007, Winchester Friends, Indiana. Bud was born in Winchester, Indiana, on April 27, 1918, to Tom and Ruby (Anderson) Bosworth. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1937. Bud married Irene Cox on December 14, 1940. He enlisted in the US Navy in March of 1944 and was a machinist aboard a ship in the Pacific fleet near Okinawa. Bud became a mouldmaker at Overmyer in 1959, and sometime thereafter moved to a job at the Anchor Hocking glass factory’s mould shop. After several years there, Bud finished his machinist career at Armstrong Mould Company. The Bosworths began attending Winchester Friends Church in 1951, and joined in 1955. Bud was a trustee for many years and was a repository of knowledge about the intricacies and idiosyncrasies of the Winchester Friends meetinghouse and grounds. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister and brother, an infant daughter and his wife, Irene in 2004. He is survived by his daughter and her husband; a granddaughter and grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

BUTT Thomas Rudolph Butt, 78, November 29, 2007, Centre Friends, North Carolina. Thomas was born April 25, 1929. He was a Quaker minister who served in North Carolina Yearly Meeting of Friends for 44 years. He retired in 2000. He began serving NCYM in 1956 as a student pastor at Concord Friends Meeting while attending Guilford College. Subsequent meetings served in NCYM were: Bethesda, Centre, Hunting Creek, Providence, Liberty, Somerton, Chatham and Jamestown Friends meetings. Thomas also served Lost Creek Friends of Wilmington Yearly Meeting in East Tennessee for a period of time. He also served in many leadership roles with NCYM. Many homes throughout the country and Kenya, East Africa have items ranging from whistles, baby cradles, puzzles, furniture, etc., that he made in his woodworking shop. He was preceded in death by his father, Issac C. Butt; and his mother, Margaret Monds Butt. He is survived by his wife, Mary R. Butt; son, Thomas R. Butt; two daughters, Phyllis (Tom) Gibbs and Anne (Scott) Caudle; one sister, Shirley Spivey; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held December 2, 2007, at Centre Friends Meeting. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Randolph, P.O. Box 9, Asheboro, North Carolina 27204-0009.

CARTER Roy A. Carter, 77, December 2, 2007, Russiaville Friends, Indiana. He was born in Russiaville on March 14, 1930, the son of Walter E. and Arlie (Ticen) Carter. On August 28, 1957, he married Karlene (Horine) Carter who survives. Roy was a retired farmer and electrician. He graduated from Russiaville High School in 1948. He was a lifelong member of Russiaville Friends Meeting where he served as a trustee. Roy was an active participant in the Northern Area Quaker Men and in Farm Bureau. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and outdoor activities. In addition to his wife, survivors include: one daughter, Lois (Mark) Anderson; two sons, Kent (Sue) Carter and Kyle Carter; three grandchildren; two brothers, Lester (Anna) Carter and Wayne (Kay) Carter; and several nieces and nephews. Roy was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mildred Shepherd; and brothers, Robert, Lee, Orville and Herman Carter. Services were conducted by his pastor, the Rev. Jamie Lyon. Memorial contributions may be made to Russiaville Friends Meeting or Kokomo Rescue Mission.

CRADLER James Paul Cradler, 79, December 26, 2007, Whittier First Friends, California. Jim was born August 1, 1928, in Pacific Grove to a Quaker family. He attended Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon, graduating with a degree in forestry. During a summer break in his collegiate career, Jim met his first wife, Elizabeth Winder, at Sequoia National Park where both were working. The pair married in Whittier in 1950 and gave birth to two daughters, Christine and Karen. Jim worked as a structural steel project manager in Los Angeles County and was an adept and detail-oriented handyman and carpenter. He independently designed and built the first home his family owned and throughout his life repaired and maintained an impressive collection of antique clocks. He also loved the outdoors and was an avid camper, skier, hiker and golfer. Jim actively participated in the Whittier First Friends community, serving on a number of boards and committees and was vitally involved in the Meetinghouse construction in the 1970s. He served on the Quaker Gardens Board, William Penn Manor Board and was clerk of the meeting during the formation of the Western Association of the Religious Society of Friends (WARSF) as a link with Friends United Meeting. Jim was clerk of WARSF for 10 years and served FUM on its General Board and as a trustee. His travel to Friends events in Kenya, Palestine and around the U.S. gave him a deep appreciation for the breadth of Quaker faith and practice. Upon Elizabeth’s death after 50 years of marriage, Jim relocated to Gasquet, California, in 2000. He joined Del Norte Habitat for Humanity and quickly became one of the organization’s most enthusiastic members. In the spring of 2006, Jim’s daughter introduced him to Rena Davis of Crescent City, and after a six-month courtship the couple was married in an impromptu ceremony in Armenia during a Habitat for Humanity building project. Jim and Rena honored their one-year anniversary in September 2007 by legalizing their marriage in the U.S. with a wedding ceremony attended by family and friends. Jim’s family remembers him as a loving husband, a caring brother, a supportive father, a proud grandpa and a man of many talents. He is survived by his wife, Rena Davis Cradler; brother and sister, John Cradler and Ruth Hunt Williamson and their spouses; sisterin- law, Esther Nelson; daughters, Chris Cradler and Karen Davis and their spouses; five grandchildren; and three step-children. A memorial service was held on Monday, December 31, at the United Methodist Church in Crescent City. A Memorial Meeting for Worship will take place April 5 at Whittier First Friends.

CUMMINGS Ray Cummings, 67, December 5, 2007, Glenwood Friends, North Carolina. Ray was born on November 11, 1940, to the late Clyde D. Cummings Sr. and Louise O. Cummings. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 38 years of service. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Ralph B. Cummings and Don R. Cummings. His immediate survivors are his wife, Barbara Crouse Cummings; children, Laura (Randy) Lewis, Lisa (Norman) Boone and Jeffrey (Kelly) Dalton Cummings; brothers, Clyde D. Cummings Jr., Frank R. Cummings, Lynn Cummings and Jerry McMasters; sister, Mary Lou Strong; and four grandchildren. Funeral services were held December 9 at Glenwood Friends Meeting, with the Rev. Tim Grant, the Rev. Robert Kidd and the Rev. Winfred Crouse officiating. Donations may be made to the Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke University; the American Legion Post # 386; or to Glenwood Friends Meeting.

FARLOW Connie Lou Andrews Farlow, 4l, January 11, 2008, Poplar Ridge Friends, North Carolina. Mrs. Farlow was born December 8, l966, in Hawaii, a daughter of Nova Lawrence and Rachel Haller Andrews. She was a graduate of Marshall University and was employed with Hopewell Elementary School as financial secretary. On February 12, l994, she married David Farlow who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Allen Prescott Farlow and Samuel Nova Farlow; one daughter, Caroline Gage Farlow; one sister, Joy (Jeff) Smith; one brother, Larry (Sue) Andrews Jr.; her mother and step-father, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Pingley; six nephews; three nieces; a great-nephew; three great-nieces; sister-in-laws; and her mother-in-law, Jewel Farlow. She was preceded in death by her father- in-law, Dennis Farlow. Memorial services were conducted January 14 by the Poplar Ridge Friends Meeting Pastor Randall A. Quate and Pastor James Shields of the First Christian Church of High Point and Kernersville. GARNER Faye D. Garner, 70, January 15, 2008, New Hope Friends, North Carolina. Faye was born March 25, 1937, to the late Peary and Molly Davis. She graduated from B.F. Grady High School and later received her degree in education from East Carolina University. Faye was a teacher for Wayne County Public Schools and spent her entire teaching career at Meadow Lane Elementary School. She retired from teaching in 1993. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her mother and father-in-law, William and Lela Sills Garner. Faye is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, William D. Garner Jr.; her daughters, Kyra Lynn Garner and Terri Faye (Harvey) Thompson; four grandchildren; one sister, Sibyle (Roy) Davis Smith; a sisterin- law; nieces and nephews and their children. Funeral services were held January 17 at New Hope Friends Church with Faye’s husband, Bill Garner, officiating. GOSSETT Lawrence Ray Gossett, 76, January 13, 2008, High Point, North Carolina. Gossett was born July 14, 1931, the eldest of 11 children to William Walter and Hazel Gordon Gossett. After graduating from Colfax School, Lawrence joined the United States Air Force where he served as a radio mechanic. He credited the Air Force with two of life’s most important decisions, his wife and his career. His experience with radar systems in the Air Force led to a fulfilling 37 year career at Western Electric Corporation where he had many treasured friends. While stationed in Cambridge, England during the Korean War, he met the attractive June Nichols on a blind date. After a brief three-month courtship, they were engaged. In addition to his parents, Gossett was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Gaynelle Gossett; and a brother-in-law, Jackie Beard. Gossett is survived by his wife of 54 years, June Gossett; their two daughters, Elaine (Bill) Mitchell and Wendy (Curtis) Richards; a son, Stephen (Michele) Gossett; ten grandchildren; ten brothers; an aunt; 23 nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Floyd Reynolds. The funeral was held January 16 at Deep River Friends Meeting, by the Rev. Scott Wagoner. Interment was in the church cemetery with military honors. HOWELL Robert M. (Bobby) Howell, 78, September 16, 2007, Hood Swamp Friends, North Carolina. Bobby was the son of the late Jarvis Benjamin Howell and Anna Ham Howell. He was employed by Franklin Baking Company for 45 years. Bobby was an active member of the Hood Swamp Meeting. Among his services were as youth leader and elder. He served in various capacities in Contentnea Quarterly Meeting and North Carolina Yearly Meeting. Bobby served many terms on the Quaker Lake Camp and Conference Center Board of Directors. He also attended FUM Triennials and programs of FWCC. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jarvis Benjamin “J.B.” Howell Jr. He is survived by his wife, Velda Faye Smith Howell; a daughter, Bonnie Katrina Howell; three brothers, Norwood (Lorise) Howell, Floyd (Betty) Howell and Lloyd Howell; two sisters, Mattie Underwood and Dorothy “Dot” (Nathan) Ham. Howell leaves behind two “adopted” sons, Cliffton “Nick” Nichols and Justin Harville, who performed many services for the family. Jay Worrell, a long-time friend, is recognized by the family for his invaluable support.

LLOYD Thurman Lloyd, 95, December 22, 2007, First Friends Noblesville, Indiana. Thurman was born June 17, 1912, to Tallise and Florence (Bowles) Lloyd, both deceased. He was a 1931 graduate of Noblesville High School. He and his wife owned and operated OK Hatchery in Lebanon for 15 years. Later he worked for Pickett’s Poultry in Sheridan. He retired from Moorman Feed Company in Reynolds, Indiana, having delivered feed to local farmers for over 20 years. He was a member of First Friends Church of Noblesville for over 60 years. Survivors include wife, Helen Shepard, whom he married on October 6, 1940; sister, Juanita “Peg” Moser; great-nephew, Chance Carpenter; great-niece, Misti Carpenter; brother-in-law, Dale Shepard; and sister-in-law, Nellie Femyer. Services were held December 27, 2007, in Kercheval Funeral Home in Sheridan.

NELSON Bertie Skeen Nelson, 89, December 29, 2007, Poplar Ridge Friends, North Carolina. Mrs. Nelson was born April 24, 1918, a daughter of the late Enos and Winnie Briles Skeen. A resident of the Hillsville Community of Randolph County all of her life, Mrs. Nelson was a graduate of Trinity High School. She was co-founder of Nelson Frames, Inc., and retired in 1987. She was formerly a Sunday school teacher, as well as pianist/organist of the meeting. On December 24, 1939, Mrs. Nelson married W. Allen Nelson, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by four brothers; two sisters; and a great-granddaughter. Survivors include one daughter, Audrey (Kelly) Toth; two sons, R. Keith (Myrna) Nelson and Norman O. (Beverly) Nelson; one sister, Radie Kennedy; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held January 1, 2008, at Poplar Ridge Friends Meeting with Pastor Randall A. PAINTER Bette L. Painter, 80, December 14, 2007, Jericho Friends, Indiana. Bette was born July 25, 1927, to Raymond and Opal (Garringer) Clevenger. She was a 1945 graduate of Ridgeville High School, a homemaker, artist and an X-Ray technician. Bette was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lee Arthur (Art) Painter; six sisters; and one brother. Bette is survived by her son, Randy (Amy) Painter; daughter, Sandi (Larry) Detro; five grandsons; three stepgrandchildren; sister, Helen Matheson; special friend, Norval Harris; and several nieces and nephews.

REYNOLDS Esther L. Reynolds, 95, August 14, 2007, Jericho Friends, Indiana. Esther was born October 19, 1911. She was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening, cooking, sewing and peppermint tea. Esther was preceded in death by her husband, Fred E. Reynolds; four sons, John, Walter, Eddie and Freddie; four daughters, Peggy Baker, Elizabeth Cox, Mary Hicks and Colleen Landess; four brothers, Everett, John, Jesse and Elmer Cash; four sisters, Ethel Kaupp, Edith Sellers, Lucy Baurnan and Eva Mann. Survivors include five sons and two daughters, William (Ermal) Reynolds, Robert H. Reynolds, Linda (Pat) Wysong, Hazel (Jesse) Riley, Frank E. Reynolds, Ted Reynolds and Larry (Rosie) Reynolds; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

RIDENOUR Elinor “Kay” Ridenour, 68, December 27, 2007, Wabash Friends, Indiana. Kay was born March 15, 1939, to Donald and Mary Louise (Knox) Ridenour. A 1957 graduate of Noble High School, she received a degree from the Indiana Business College in Indianapolis. In 2004 she retired from Chrysler Corporation, Kokomo, after 24 years. She was preceded in death by her father; one sister, Shirley Ross; and a nephew, David Ross. Surviving are her mother; a nephew, Steven (Jeannie) Ross; and two nieces, Susan (Jeff) Lewis and DeAnn (Don) Osborne.

ROCKETT Harvey Hubbard “Herb” Rockett, 87, December 6, 2007, Centre Friends, North Carolina. Mr. Rockett was born on April 27, 1920, to the late Lemuel and Beatrice Coltrane Rockett. He retired as superintendent of fleet maintenance with the City of Greensboro. He was active as an elder, usher, in Sunday school and a member of Quaker Men. He was preceded in death by his wife, Clarice White Rockett; brother, William Rockett; and grandchildren, Jason and Ashley Cornelius. Survivors include his daughters, Judy (James) Bishop and Pamela Rockett; grandchildren, Leisha Bishop and Karen Boone; and great-grandson, Jesse Rockett Boone. SMITH Gaynelle Moxley Smith, 71, December 5, 2007, Deep Creek Friends, North Carolina. Gaynelle was born June 17, 1936, to the late Will H. and Ollie Carter Moxley. She was the granddaughter of the late D.H. (Bud) and Maggie Wagoner Moxley and James D. and Louisa Swaim Carter. Gaynelle married James H. Smith on October 31, 1954, who survives. In addition to her parents and grandparents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Stanley Moxley; and great-grandson, Elijah Ray Swaim. She is also survived by two brothers, Hayden (Flora Jean) Moxley and Gray (Shelby) Moxley; three children, Jeffery James (Becky) Smith, Jeannie Katherine Smith and Gary William Smith; six grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Her funeral service was held December 8 at Deep Creek Friends Meeting by the Rev. Lee Lane. WILLIAMS Betty Jo Hutchens Williams, 78, December 6, 2007, Pilot View Friends, North Carolina. Mrs. Williams was born August 11, 1929, to the late Lee and Minnie Driver Hutchens. She was a 1952 graduate of Appalachian State Teachers College and a retired teacher from the Yadkin County school system. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, H. Smith Williams; and son, Ted Columbus Williams. Surviving are her children, Dixie Jo (Tom) Williams-Kilby and H. Smith (Goldie) Williams Jr.; six grandchildren; sisters, Hazel (Donald) Casstevens and Linda Williams; brother, Jimmy (Patty) Hutchens; sister-in-law, Kathryn W. Gaither; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. The funeral was held December 10 at Pilot View Friends Meeting, with the Rev. Nelson Puffenbarger and the Rev. Kenny Gooden officiating. ZELL Joe William Zell, 94, November 10, 2007, Winchester Friends, Indiana. Joe was born on April 14, 1913, the only child of Omer and Effie (Moredock) Zell. He graduated from Stoney Creek High School in 1930 and went to work full-time on his family’s farm as the Great Depression took a firm hold on rural America. On February 5, 1938, Joe and Rosa Mary Sutton were married at the home of evangelist/pastor Zelma Mills. Joe raised a variety of crops and livestock and earned a reputation as an excellent and hardworking farmer. He loved farming and considered it spiritual ministry. Joe was preceded in death by his parents; and by his wife, Rosa Mary just five weeks earlier. Joe is survived by three sons and their wives; eight grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren.
