BARKER Claude Pugh (C.P.) Barker, 94, April 29, 2009, Providence Friends, North Carolina. C.P. was the son of Claude and Elise Pugh Barker. He was a life-long Quaker. He was employed by Boren Brick for many years before retiring from Covington Diesel in Greensboro. He enjoyed his retirement and looking after his animals on the farm. C.P. was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Tommy. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Jewel McClintock Barker; son, Charles (Joann) Barker; daughter in law, Betty Barker; brother, George (Annie) Barker; sister, Mabel Ferree; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. The funeral service was held May 2 with the Rev. Charles R. Adams officiating. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Randolph. BURROW Irene Joyce Burrow, 88, April 10, 2009, Asheboro Friends, North Carolina. Irene was owner/operator of Superior Dry Cleaning. She was preceded in death by her husband, Obert C. Burrow, Sr., and is survived by her daughters, Evelyn Harris and Lillian (Tom) Jordan; son, O.C. (Shelly) Burrow, Jr.; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and sister-inlaws, Lillian Burrow Brown and Dorothy Burrow Judd. Funeral services were held April 12 with the Revs. Leslie N. Winslow and Pat Thames officiating. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Randolph or Asheboro Friends Meeting. CLARKSON Elizabeth Rachael Hutton Clarkson, 93, December 17, 2008, Poplar Ridge Friends, New York. Elizabeth was born June 16, 1915, and was brought up in Barnesville, Ohio, where her parents were teachers at what is now the Olney Friends School. Her father, Wetherhill (“Weddy”) Hutton, later became the headmaster of the school. For a short time following her graduation from Earlham College, Elizabeth taught school in Tennessee. Later, she served in an internship as assistant to the director of Pendle Hill, Howard Brinton. She lived with the Brinton family in what is now called the Brinton House on the Pendle Hill campus in Wallingford, Pennsylvania. It was at Pendle Hill that she met her husband-to-be, George Clarkson, a graduate student at Haverford College. They were married July 5, 1941, and enjoyed a full and happy 67 years together. After several moves around New York due to George’s education and work as a Methodist minister, they settled south of Ithaca on their beloved acreage, the “Ash Grove.” A birthright Friend, Elizabeth was often humorously critical of Friends’ ways. She expressed grateful relief that our Religious Society of Friends was more open and friendly than the Society of her upbringing. George’s work as minister, college chaplain, professor and study abroad advisor brought Elizabeth into contact with many communities and individuals, and she was as active as he was, though often behind the scenes. They requested membership in Poplar Ridge Friends Meeting in 1969. George was appointed pastor in 1978 and later was recorded as a minister among Friends by the New York Yearly Meeting. Elizabeth was a devoted and loving mother of three daughters, Ellen, Evelyn and Kathleen. In addition to her husband and daughters, she is survived by five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. COX Nella Fae Lowe Cox, 83, May 9, 2009, Bethel Friends, North Carolina. Nella was born July 26, 1925, the daughter of William Albert and Nola Campbell Lowe. She was a homemaker, an active member of Bethel Friends Meeting, a charter member of Randolph Arts Guild and a member of Asheboro Woman’s Club. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lantford Emmitt Cox; and her brother, Rex Lowe. She is survived by three sons, Lantford, Richard (Sarah) and Leslie (Robin); and five grandsons. The funeral was held May 12 at Bethel Friends Meeting, with the Revs. Leslie N. Winslow and Terry Kersey officiating. Memorials may be made to Bethel Friends Meeting. EDWARDS Lillie Ruth Trogdon Edwards, 95, March 23, 2009, Asheboro Friends, North Carolina. Lillie was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Elmer Edwards. Surviving are son, Donald Ralph Edwards; one grandson; and one great-grandson. Funeral services were held at Asheboro Friends Meeting with the Revs. Ken and Pat Thames and the Rev. Leslie Winslow officiating. GREENE Viola Iris Albertson Greene, 91, March 22, 2009, Science Hill Friends, North Carolina. Viola was born September 30, 1917, the daughter of the late Joseph and Katherine McCauley Albertson. Viola was active in the Science Hill Friends choir and Missionary Society. Many children raised in the meeting benefited from her teaching at Sunday School and Bible School. She was a self-employed seamstress and had worked at Randolph Farm Equipment and taught basketry at Randolph Community College. Throughout her life she created useful and beautiful handcrafts including traditional rug hooking, quilting, basket-making, knitting, crocheting, tatting and doll making. Several of her award-winning baskets were exhibited in the North Carolina governor’s office and the Smithsonian Museum. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Greene; son, Earl Greene, Jr.; sisters, Opal Dorsett and LaRue Copple; brother, Joseph Albertson; and grandson, Brian Greene. Survivors include her daughters, Janice Marie Greene, Brenda Faye Greene and Vickie Joy Greene; son, Roger Lee Greene; sister, Lauretta Hunt; brothers, Thurman Albertson and Darrell Albertson; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Science Hill Friends Meeting, with Janice Greene, Brady Morrison, Max Lanier and Melinda Vaughan leading the services. Memorials may be made to the LaRue Copple Music Fund at Science Hill Friends Meeting, c/o David Briles. HARRIS Rosemary Crist Harris, 93, January 1, 2009, Bellingham Friends, Washington. Rosemary was born December 2, 1915, to John Anthony and Mary VonKronenberg Crist. After graduating from Lincoln Chiropractic College in 1940 she began to practice in Cumberland with her father. In 1942, an accidental gas leak caused a tremendous explosion in the building where they lived and worked. She survived but her father did not. She discovered the Society of Friends in St Louis, Missouri, in 1942 and in that year joined the American Friends Service Committee year-round work camp in Indianapolis, Indiana, where she met Howard Harris. They were married in 1943. They began their married life, after a 600-mile honeymoon bicycle trip in New England, in a small cottage at Scattergood School near West Branch, Iowa, where they for several months cared for the unoccupied buildings of the school. Throughout the next 23 years they lived in Connecticut, Kansas, Iowa, Ohio (where Howard pastored Xenia Friends Meeting), New York (where Howard pastored Glens Falls Meeting), Michigan and California, finally settling in Bellingham, Washington. After home schooling her children and studying and exploring many aspects of education, she established the Rufus Jones School in Bellingham near the Western Washington University campus, which she directed for 25 years. Rosemary is survived by her husband of 65 years; three brothers, John (Marge), Charles (Rum) and Joseph; a sister, Mary Louise (Max) Boyer; six children, David, Heather (Andrew) Ezrre, Holly, Timothy (Ellen), Stanley (Karen) and Stephen (Margaret); 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. HOLLOWELL Susan Catherine Lenox Hollowell, 98, January 16, 2009, Bear Creek Friends, Indiana. Catherine was the widow of Lee E. Hollowell and mother of three children, one of whom survives. Catherine was of Quaker stock and served her local meeting, which she was a member of for over 80 years, in many capacities, including elder, overseer, recording clerk, presiding clerk and Sunday School teacher. She served Winchester Quarterly Meeting as recording clerk and recording clerk of the Quarterly Meeting of Ministry and Counsel. Funeral services were held at Bear Creek on January 20. HOSKINS Sybil Jones Hoskins, 82, May 5, 2009, College Avenue Friends, Iowa. Sybil was born November 11, 1926, daughter of Roscoe and Marion Jones. She attended Erskine Academy and graduated from Lincoln School of Providence, Rhode Island. Following a year of working as a telephone operator, she attended William Penn College in Oskaloosa, Iowa, majoring in home economics. She met Moses Hoskins while participating in a young adult fellowship group at College Avenue Friends. They were married in South China, Maine, on August 27, 1949, and made their home on the Hoskins family farm near Fremont, Iowa. They were true partners for the 55 years they shared together. Sybil served on various committees including the United Society of Friends Women. The funeral service was May 11 at College Avenue Friends Church in Oskaloosa with a celebration of life May 12 at Grandview Heights in Marshalltown. Her memory is honored by her daughters, Marion (Steve) Channell and Margaret (John) Good; grandson, Isaac Good; and many extended family members and friends. Memorials may be given to the Ecumenical Cupboard in Oskaloosa or the House of Compassion in Marshalltown. PATTON Mary Evelyn Patton, 93, July 13, 2008, Knightstown Friends, Indiana. Mary was born July 7, 1915, daughter of the late Firman and Gladys (Larrison) Kaufman. She assisted her husband, Curtis, in operating Pattern’s IGA grocery store in Knightstown for 25 years. Survivors include a daughter, Lavon (Rex) Sigler; two sons, Jim (Marcia) and Joe (Penny); nine grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; three greatgreat- grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis; three brothers, Paul, Ralph and Dale; and a sister, Opal Doolittle. Funeral services were held July 16. Memorial contributions may be made to Knightstown Friends Church or the American-Lung Association. PAYNE Ann Hardy Fassett Payne, 83, August 1, 2008, Pima Monthly Meeting, Arizona. Ann was born September 5, 1924, to Irving and Grace Hardy. She became a member of the Religious Society of Friends, by application to the Manahassett Preparative Meeting, in September 1935. Her membership in Westbury Monthly Meeting was transferred to Cambridge (Massachusetts) Monthly Meeting in 1946. She and Deane Fraser Fassett were married in that meeting on July 16, 1949. She then attended Sandy Spring Monthly Meeting from 1955-63 and that year transferred her membership to Gunpowder Meeting in Maryland. Ann was received into membership in Pima Monthly Meeting, Tucson, Arizona, by application in March 1978. As a young child, Ann developed serious poliomyelitis and wore leg braces for a long time. Ann attended a nursing program as a young adult and graduated with honors from Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. She served as a cadet nurse in WWII and later became an adjudicator for Blue Cross Blue Shield. Ann married a long-time friend, Dr. S. Howard Payne, in 1984, and moved with him to Green Valley, Arizona. Ann is survived by her husband, S. Howard Payne; and four daughters from her previous marriage, Cynthia “Nolly” Gesinger, Jeanne Medlin, Karen Kinkhaus and Elizabeth Fassett; as well as two grandchildren and one great-grandson. PIKE Joseph “Joe K.” Pike, 88, March 29, 2009, Anderson First Friends, Indiana. Joe was born May 25, 1920. In 1945, he started in the music business as Joe’s Record Shop owner of the Music & Hobby Shop, Morgan’s Music Store and he was part-owner of Music Today. He graduated from Anderson High School in 1938 and attended Indiana University. Joe was a birthright Quaker and treasurer of First Friends Church for more than 50 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert E. and Cicely Jane Lancaster Pike; brother, Ralph Pike; two nephews; and two nieces. Survivors include his sisters, Doris Pike, Phyllis Van Duyn and Rachael (Ronald) Ginder; sister-in-law, Dorothy L. Pike; and several nieces and nephews. Services were conducted by Pastor Jack Holliday of First Friends and Pastor George Taylor of Anderson. Memorial contributions may be made to First Friends Church Anderson. REEDY Elizabeth “Bee” Reedy, 97, February 20, 2009, Plainfield Friends, Indiana. Bee was born May 18, 1911, to Horace and Gertrude Shaw Ballard. She was a 1928 graduate of Plainfield High School and married Wesley W. Reedy in November of 1936. He preceded her in death in 1969. Bee was a buyer for Wm. H Block Co. for 30 years, retiring in 1964. She was a member of the Plainfield Friday Club, a volunteer at Hendricks County Hospital Guild, a server for Meals on Wheels and was a founding member of the Hendricks County Community Foundation. Survivors include eight nieces and nephews; and the families of Philip Ballard, Marilynn Sturgeon, Sara Niles, John Milhous, Robert Milhous, Paul Milhous, Nancy Wilson and Rose Ann McHenry. A memorial was held March 21 at the Plainfield Friends Meeting of which she was a lifetime member. REVIS Kathryn Lucille Vesey Revis, 89, April 7, 2009, Noblesville First Friends, Indiana. Kathryn was born April 26, 1919, the daughter of Horace and Leaffie Esther Burton Vesey. She was a graduate of Sheridan High School. She and Noel Revis were married August 31, 1940. He died February 10, 2007. Kathryn was a member of Noblesville First Friends Church where she was a former Sunday School teacher and sang in the choir. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Lynn Revis; a sister, Florence Stevian; and a brother, William Vesey. She is survived by a daughter, Karen Sue Dance; son, Larry (Lynn) Revis; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-greatgrandchild; and a half-brother, John Vesey. A memorial service was held on April 13 which Pastor Rick Schoeff and Pastor Bill Medlin officiated. Memorials may be made to Noblesville First Friends Church. ROSE Harold B. Rose, 92, December 6, 2008, Plainfield Friends, Indiana. Harold was born March 24, 1916, to the late Callie and Dessie Williams Rose. He was a farmer in the late 1940s and 1950s. He also worked for Public Service Indiana and retired in 1978 as the owner of Harold’s Garage. His memberships include the Plainfield Masonic Lodge #653, where he was a 60-year member. Funeral services were December 10. Survivors include his wife, Pamela Bryant Rose; son, Bill (Lynn) Rose; daughter, Alyce (Jerry) Collins; stepson, David (Jackie) Bryant; step-daughter, K.B. (Ronald) Steele; sisters, Helen Stone and Norma Holden; 11 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and six great-greatgrandchildren. SHOCKLEY James Eugene Shockley, 78, December 15, 2008, Plainfield Friends, Indiana. Jim was born March l5, 1930, to the late Herbert and Fern Hysong Shockley. He was a graduate of Pinnell High School. He retired in 1992 after 28 years with Farm Bureau Co-op Association. Prior to that, he farmed in Hendricks and Boone Counties for many years. Jim was an Army veteran of the Korean War. Funeral Services were December 18. Survivors include his wife, Marjorie L. Mc- Daniel Shockley; daughter, Brenda L. (Tom) Lesperance; step-daughters, Jerilyn (Terry) Monroe and Georgi Bruner; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. SPELL Fay Davis Spell, 96, March 13, 2009, Marlboro Friends, North Carolina. Fay was born October 1, 1912, the daughter of Grover Cleveland and Oneida Walker Farlow. She was a homemaker, enjoyed travelling and had read the Bible through several times. She is preceded in death by her husbands, David Davis and Bearnie Spell; sons, Jerry Davis and Farlowe (Peggy) Davis; two brothers; and one sister. She is survived by a son, Jimmy (Betty) Davis; daughter, Jane (Gary) Mullins; daughter-in-law, Faye Davis; stepdaughter, Yvonne (John) Williams; step-son, Cecil (JoAnn) Spell; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three great-greatgrandchildren. The funeral was officiated by the Rev. John Sides. Memorials may be made to Marlboro Friends Meeting, Building Fund. SPILLMAN Martha Ann Vestal Spillman, 89, April 28, 2009, Forbush Friends, North Carolina. Martha was born October 23, 1919, to Sarah and Hampton Vestal. She grew up as one of nine brothers and sisters. As a young woman, she met and married John R. Spillman. Quilting and crocheting were her favorite past-times. Martha also provided many hours of volunteer time as a Sunday School teacher, reading tutor at Forbush Elementary and Meals on Wheels. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, David; and siblings, Hayes, Charlie, Avery, Junior, Hillary, Winford and Stella. She is survived by her sister, Marie Cave; two daughters, Ruth Ann (Frank) Martin and Julia (Tony) Gagliardi; a daughter-in-law, Brenda Spillman; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren (with one more on the way); and four great-greatgrandchildren. A celebration of Martha’s life was held May 3 at Forbush Friends Meeting, with Andy Lambert officiating. Memorials may be made to the Forbush Friends Meeting Building Fund; to Hospice & Palliative Care Center, Winston-Salem; or to any other worthy organization selected by the donor. SWIFT Myra A. Swift, 93, December 16, 2008, Plainfield Friends, Indiana. Myra was born February 17, 1915, a daughter of the late Isaac and Ethel Atkinson. She worked 20 years as secretary to the superintendent at the Indiana Boys School before retiring in 1977. She was a member of the Quaker Homebuilders and the Plainfield Friends Meeting. Preceding her in death were her husband, Harold Swift; and a daughter, Meredith Blubaugh. Survivors include sons, John and James Swift; a daughter, Virginia Lindley; a sister, Helen Agan; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. Services were held at the Plainfield Friends Meeting. TUCKER Beatrice (Granny B.) Stroud Tucker, 96, March 5, 2009, Springfield Friends, North Carolina. Born September 19, 1912, Beatrice was the daughter of the late Klyma and Sallie Crater Stroud. She worked most of her life in the hosiery industry. After her retirement, she worked part-time in the Allen Jay Middle School Cafeteria. In 1995, she started volunteering at High Point Regional Hospital and logged in 3,127 hours. She also crocheted baby caps for the newborns at the hospital. Due to ill health, she had to give up her volunteer work at age 90. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Roscoe P. Tucker; a granddaughter, Toni Madden Hill; a son-in-law, Fletcher Garner; two brothers; and three sisters. Survivors include two daughters, Eva Garner and Betty (Curtis) Madden; five grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. The funeral was officiated by the Rev. Ray Luther. Memorials may be directed to Springfield Friends Meeting or to a charity of the donor’s choice. ULLOM G. Allen Ullom, 62, March 13, 2009, Bear Creek Friends, Indiana. Allen was born on February 11, 1947, and was a graduate of Lee L. Driver High School and Purdue University. He was a former agriculture teacher and had served as a county agricultural extension agent. He formerly served as clerk of the monthly meeting on ministry and oversight and as a representative to Indiana Yearly Meeting. Survivors include two children and one grandson. WHEELER Jeffrey William Wheeler, 45, December 13, 2008, Goldsboro Friends, North Carolina. Jeff was born December 17, 1963, to the late George Robert Wheeler and Jane Elizabeth Melvin Wheeler. He owned and operated Wheelco Industries, served in the United States Army, was an avid hunter and fisherman and had a great love for the Washington Redskins. Jeff and his wife, Susan Wheeler, found Friends a few years before his death and in those years both of them were faithful and loved members of Goldsboro Friends Meeting. Though his last years were difficult he often said that he knew that he was in God’s hands and knew God’s mercy and love. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Kelli. He is survived by his wife, Susan Moore Wheeler; sons, Scott and Bryan; daughter, Lori (Blake) Barba; five grandchildren; a brother, Mike (Sally) Wheeler; and two nieces. WIATT Christine Anne Wiatt, 61, October 23, 2008, Knightstown Friends, Indiana. Christine was born March 6, 1947, a daughter of the late Leonard Wiatt and Joyce Holt Wiatt. She was a 1965 Knightstown High School graduate, and a 1969 Indiana University graduate. She worked with the Girl Scouts, served as a director of a YWCA for 20 years and was a librarian at Indiana University East. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a brother. Survivors include her mother, Joyce Wiatt; a sister, Barbara (Michael) Garland; her companion, Darla (Shannon) Smilardo; two nephews; one great-niece; and one greatnephew. Funeral services were November 2 at Knightstown Friends Church with the Rev. Mark Herbkersman officiating. WILLIAMS Sallie Styers Williams, 96, April 29, 2009, Union Cross Friends, North Carolina. Sallie was born to the late Thomas Walter, Sr., and Sallie Jane Shore Styers. Sallie was the eldest member of the Union Cross Friends Church, where she served at Bible School and on the food committee for as long as her health allowed. Sallie Bet, as she was called, was best known for her hard work and her love for the farm life. She was a true homemaker and enjoyed reading, gardening, canning and sewing. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sidney Pearson Williams; two sisters, Blanche Sobotta and Molly Brown; five brothers, Allen, Henry, Paul, Luther and Marshall Styers; two half-sisters, Lucy Styers and Virginia Coram; four half-brothers, Fred, Ralph, Roy and T.W., Jr.; step-mother, Ethel Styers; and step-sister, Beulah Williard. Surviving are two sons, Richard Dean Williams (friend, Peggy Davis); Donnie Hugh (Carol) Williams; one daughter, Helen (Bobby) Choplin; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Her funeral was held May 1 at Union Cross Friends Church by the Revs. Bob Choplin, Archie Creed and Nelson Puffenbarger. Memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, Yadkinville. WINSLOW Clara Hall Thompson Winslow, 98, April 6, 2009, Cane Creek Friends, North Carolina. She was preceded in death by her parents, William H. Hall and LaNetta Griffin Hall; husband, Paul P. Thompson; husband, Roy Winslow; son, Jimmy Thompson; and brothers, James and Henry Hall. Survivors include a daughter, Bobbie Jean Teague; step-children, Esther Markham, Janie Proctor, Waldo Winslow, Harry Winslow and Elihu Winslow; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. The funeral was conducted April 10 at Cane Creek Friends Meeting by the Revs. Mark Tope and Dr. Stephen Dutton.
