Dear Reader
We are eagerly looking forward to seeing many of you at the FUM
Triennial sessions in Williamsburg, Virginia. Our theme, "Whom
Shall I Send? Who Shall Go for Us?" is exciting. It reflects
the sense that we have emerged from a period of introspection and
internal controversy to recover our identity as Christ's friends,
"appointedto go and bear fruit, fruit that will last."
(John 15:15-16)
In recent issues, we have written about overseas missions, international
peace, the sanctity of life, and racial reconciliation. These are
products of transformed lives, the fruit that comes from abiding
in Christ. Our service in the world, our witness for justice and
peace, all flow from individual lives that have been sustained and
supported by the community of faith.
Evangelism is at the heart of it all, the tap-root of the ministering
church. I have heard it said, "Friends don't proselytize."
What they fear is a boorish attempt to manipulate others, a sort
of spiritual head-hunting. But the evangelism we are talking about
is the invitation to others to enjoy the same joy we have already
discovered in communion with God and one another. Who would deny
anyone this treasure?
Other Friends want to share their faith but feel ineffective. I
hope that articles in this issue will encourage us all by affirming
that God works in many ways to invite people out of darkness and
into His glorious light. The result is healing and joy, and it is
happening among us, even now.
