February 2008 Local Meetings Fund Kenya Relief Even though things seem to be settling down in Kenya, our staff there assures us that it will be a long difficult process to see that the 300,000 people displaced by the violence are returned to productive life situations. Funds will be needed for months to come to supply food and other provisions for people whose homes and businesses have been destroyed. We hope you will consider how you can continue to participate to bring peace to our Kenyan Friends. These local meetings are doing what it takes to make sure our Friends in Kenya don't go to bed hungry every night. Wilmington Yearly Meeting: Wilmington Friends held a Simple Meal on February 17. Proceeds from this meal will go to support relief efforts. Community Friends & area Cincinnati Friends has invited David Zarembka to speak on March 3 in the evening. Indiana Yearly Meeting: West Richmond Friends has invited Mary Kay Rehard to speak at a pitch-in dinner on February 24. If they raise $1,000 at this meal, they have secured funding for a 2:1 matching grant to send up to $3,000 to Kenya. New England Yearly Meeting: Mount Toby is planning a fundraising dinner that may include a Kenyan slide show and/or a Kenyan meal. The dates are not available yet for this meal.
It's encouraging to see how folks respond when there is a real need. Time and again we have been blessed in this office by stories of all that you are doing to make sure our Kenyan Friends are well cared for. We'd like to hear from your monthly meeting as well. Send an email and tell us what your meeting is doing to help with this effort. Contribute online or contact the FUM Richmond office (8:30am-5:00pm Monday-Friday) at (765) 962-7573.
