Global
Ministries:
Friends Boys School, Belize
Friends
United Meeting first became involved in Belize through the visionary work
of Sadie Vernon, a native Belizean who returned to her home country after
spending nearly a decade working at the Lyndale Girls Home in Jamaica.
Building upon her experiences in Jamaica, Sadie helped to begin a Girls
Continuation School, which provides further education and training to
lessfortunate girls and women. The School, now operated by the Belize
Council of Churches, continues to provide education and expanded opportunities
for women today.
The Friends Boys School
In
1994, acting upon another concern for the many young men who were not
able to attend high school due to their failing the extremely difficult
entrance examinations, the Friends Boys School was founded. The Boys School,
located in Belize City, was designed to provide boys with a second opportunity:
to teach them the skills needed to retake and pass the exam and move on
to high school, or to prepare them for learning an employable tradeand
thus to keep them off the street. Since nearly 60% of Belize's population
is under the age of 19, the Boys School plays a vital role, helping to
fill the gap between grade school and work opportunities. There School
has a capacity to provided places for 40 students but actuaa numbers vary
from year to year. Last year the school was full, this year the number
of students is down to 20.
