Turkana Friends Mission

Sharing international borders with Uganda, the Sudan, and Ethiopia, the Turkana District —an arid, low lying plain which averages between 120 and 430 mm of rainfall each year —forms the northwest corner of Kenya. The Turkana people live in an atmosphere of hot termperatures, harsh winds, frequent droughts, and limited resources for development. The Turkana Friends Mission works with them to enhance and strengthen the material and the spiritual lives of individuals and communities.

Staffed entirely by Kenyan Friends, there are 10 pastors and evangelists providing a presence in 9 different villages and towns. Turkana Friends have continuously worked with the community to provide improved educational, health, community, and children's services since its founding in 1970, and its formal registration in 1972. On a limited budget they sponsor four primary and seven nursery schools. They also helped to initiate and continue to sponsor the Turkana Children's Home - an orphanage located in the town of Kalokol, faciliate the formation of women's groups, offer scholarships for street children, and provide care for the elderly.

Turkana children stand in line for waterIn addition, Friends have worked to initiate a range of community-based projects with local villages. In Lokoyo village a borehole has been sunk, and a pump system has been set up, which will provide the only reliable water system to the village. Renovations have begun in Kalokol with the hope of opening a training and conference center called, Friends Church Ability Center. Rental units are also being constructed to provide housing for local teachers.

All of these important ministries of Turkana Friends Mission are supported by an annual budget of only $32,000. 24,000 is sent direct to the Mission, 3,000 is needed for deputation in the US of the Project Leader, John Moru, and the 5,000 is required for administration, management of publicity, communication, field support and funding in the US and Kenya.Your gifts are needed to help make these things possible. Money is additionally being raised by supporters each month for scholarships at the local school, for a well, for the Tonyuotu Women's Group. Money is also needed to purchase a vehicle to support the work of the mission.
